Clive Cussler was stationed in Hawaii at Hickam Field Air Force base from 1951.

Previous to that posting, he had just met his wife to be, Barbara Knight. They dated just a few times.

He was in Hawaii during the Korean war and was there for a few years.

Now ... in Pacific Vortex, Dirk Pitt, which Clive models after himself, falls for a redhead named "Summer" and she was a woman that slipped in then abrubtly out of Dirk's life and always he remembers her with affection.

What if Clive himself actually met a redhead in Hawaii while stationed there and it turned to romance ??

After the stint with the Air Force, Clive returned to California to claim Barbara as his wife.

Thoughts anyone ?

I always thought maybe his wife was a redhead. I've never seen her picture so I don't know, but yeah he has a thing for redheads. I wouldn't be surprised if his writing of the love of Dirks life in every Pitt novel was a way for him to remember someone he'd known once long ago. It's romantic, I think every writer does this to some extent. :)

How can Dirk Pitt suggest this?!!

If Clive was interested in Barbara after a few dates, I feel he would have remained loyal to her while stationed in Hawaii.

Sure, he would have meet girls there but he wouldn't have cheated on his future wife.

You bought up an excellent point but unfortunately you have forgotten about certain exploits of our hero, Dirk Pitt.

In the fictional world of Dirk Pitt, he dates and romances Loren Smith for years and then in Trojan Odyssey, he ends up getting married to her.

Now ... you stated that Dirk Pitt "places loyalty above all" ... do you not remember in several books he ended up having romantic interludes with several woman, and ... Loren Smith also had affairs with various men ... all this whilst continuing their own relationship ?

One woman that I recall that Dirk Pitt romanced was Heidi Milligan in "Night Probe"

Can anyone recall other "on the side" romances by Dirk or Loren ?

Here's a little romance in Dragon, however not an affair, Stacy Fox showed up at Pitt's hanger and offered to give him a massage. In the morning Loren was at Pitt's bedside, asking who had slept with him last night, cause she could smell another woman on him!! <_<

I chose to think that Mr. Cussler was very faithful to his beloved wife Barbara. However, maybe wanting to do something and not being able to go through with it, Is why he made Dirk such a hit with the ladies!! A fantasy well written.

The only other romance Loren Smith has is with Phil Sawyer in Vixen 03 - he proposes to Loren. But she is also dating Dirk Pitt --- and doesn't marry Phil after saying yes to his proposal (one of those editing mysteries?). This is the only time another man's specific name is mentioned that I recall in Loren's on and off again relationship with Dirk Pitt.

Doesn't Dirk have a brief fling with the woman in Sahara...in the fort?

Loren sounds a little flustered, yes only flings.
However what I wondered is having kind of got over Summer after all the adventures what will the kids turning up do will he ever realy be able to let her die in his heart.

Helene's site has all of Dirk's "ladies" I think there was.like 3 before Loren (including summer) and then I think there was one every book after that Loren wasn't prominant in...so..out of like...what? 17 pitt books...there's probably 12 women or so?
