Title: Treasure
Description: Dirk Pitt #9

Mostly Heep - November 18, 2004 01:26 AM (GMT)
This is one of Cusslers books that really didn't do much for me.The story was very good but overall I was left kind of empty.
The best part for me was getting the chance to see Senator Pitt in *action*.Now we know where the younger Pitt got his resolve from. The scene with the Cord was priceless. This is also the first time Dirk outwits a crime family,a device Clive will use over and over.
I consider this book the start of Clives blockbuster phase.Big stories,Big action,Big ideas. They would make great movies.
I give it an 8 out of 10

I'm with Rob on this one actually. My reaction to Treasure was a lot like my reaction to Cyclops. It just didn't ring my bell in that first reading. Maybe it was the shock of Clive's new style of storytelling.
However, the Alexandria Library stuff is pretty cool. Hala Kamil was a heck of a lot more user friendly than Jessie LeBaron. THe villains were great, and the thought of an immigrant invasion...well, it didn't happen quite like that, but there's no denying that its been underway for years. Maybe that's not very PC of me, but I think the facts bear it out.
I think what rang flat was the criminal enterprise behind the scenes...the Capesterre family, and their generation long plot to...do what exactly? Where was the net profit to their initial plot? I thought everything was going just fine until that little revelation came along. This is something Clive has done more than once; he did it in Iceberg; remember that Oskar Rondheim was really Carzo Butera, street hood from Brooklyn? It's okay if you don't, it was a non-essential plot point, just like the Capesterre connection.
But I've grown accustomed to some of the Cusslerisms, and can't deduct more than a point for that. And Dragon is looming on the horizon; I need to save all my vitriol for that one.

For being better that Cyclops, in my opinion, Treasure gets an 8.

Same for me. It fell kind of flat at first reading. Maybe it was the different pacing (which I now admit was necessary for the added detail) from his earlier novels. But when I got used to the style, it fit right in.

Treasure... it was my first CC novel!!! That's why I think is one of the most beautiful CC books...

Ciao!!!

Treasure is one of my all time fasvorite cussler books. i absolutley loved the beginning with Junius Venator and the barbarians who we later find out are indians. Suleiman Aziz Ammar was perhaps my favorite villain, and you actually felt sorry for him in the end. And I also enjoyed the Capesterre Crime family posing as imposters. I gave it a 9.3/10.

I just love Treasure!!!! It gets a solid 10 from me.

Treasure was the CC novel that got me hooked. I had read RTT many years before and never made the connection until I had finished Treasure. That was probably close to 15 years ago and have been reading CC ever since. I would give Treasure 9 for quality and excitment and another .5 for getting me hooked. 9.5/10 th:

I couldn't finish the book when I was fourteen. (Ludlum was a better choice in those days for me, and he is still in my favorites. I can't forget The Chancellor Manuscript) Many years later i started the book again. I think it's not Pitt's best. But it is a good adventure. The tone of the book is more serious than the others.
7,5/10

This book really started Clive on his path of mutiple story lines. I loved the part with the Alexandria Library and the classic car chase (to bad such a lovely car gets smashed up). You have to admit the way the bad guys get it in the end is perfect. The part that I really didn't much care for was the hijacking. I just kind of lost interest in that part. overall a 7.

That was a definite strong part of the book. I loved the ending. (Gave me some ideas for my story.) Great characters. The opening with the crash in Greenland was superb. th: A solid 10.

Giordino13 - March 31, 2005 01:03 AM (GMT)
The ending was crazy in Texas!! I bet Clive looks back on his action scene with all the Mexicans threatening to cross the boarder with awe. He probably wasn't expecting that scene to, in a way, reenact itself years later (though not nearly in that magnitude). Definitley an 8 out of 10 th: th:

Either this one or Sahara is my favourite CC book. Definitely one of Cusslerīs best books. 10 out of 10 from me.

this is my number 2 favorite clive cussler book. The whole ending scene is just classic with no name hill and the car chases and a gun fight a seal team oh my just everything you can possibly get in one book. Just awesome.

I really liked this book as well.

treebrother - December 3, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
This is one of my favorites, particularly because the back-story was so well done. As others have mentioned, the prologue was great.

brocktoon75 - March 16, 2006 06:55 PM (GMT)
Started reading Treasure, and I am almost about half way through now.

Slower going for me this time through - the print is really small, I guess because if it was the same size as normal, it would be an 800-page book...

Anyway, I like it so far, but not since Vixen have I been less interested in scenes not involving Dirk Pitt. I just do not care about the Mexican and African leaderships, etc. The characters I just do not care about. And the U.N. Delegate - the MacGuffin of the terrorists and the action thus far in the book - don't care about her either. She is a strong character in her beliefs....but really, will the world end if she is out of the picture? I mean, seriously, they are going to such lenghts.

The two plots have to come together, but I will be damned if I know how they will

But - that being said - I just finished the car chase in Colorado, the attack on the cabin and the car chase... GREAT stuff. What a great piece of writing. The impatient, unprofessional terrorist - I love how Clive described what a
"good assassin" would do to get his prey. How bizarre to read that. Almost humorus.

I am intrigued on the library, but I have to say, the opening chapter, like always, with the past event - I know I will get all the information I need later, so I do not read the prologues very carefully. But this one was ok, because of the battle he described. But I had a hard time caring, again, for I know I will get what I need later. The boats carrying the library, well, we find that out later....

Anyway, so far pretty good. We will see how it all adds up I am sure. After reading 9 Dirk Pitt books from February to October of 2005, I needed a break. This is where I needed to pick up the series, and I still find the other 9 are sort of blurring together.... Especially the last three. The Caper, Iceberg - those two are strong in the head. Gly is too, he is a great character.... but anyway, so far, Treasure is right on, as far as what I expect it to be.

One last thing - if this is the action centerpiece of the book, great - well done, Clive... but I am holding out hope there is a bigger one, or a cat-and -mouse game later in the book.....it whet my appitite for another action piece.

Treasure ranks among my Top Five!!!
Easily the best terrorist plot ever!!

I'm actually not finished with this book so I read all your reviews carefully so I would not ruin the ending but I have to say that this is the best book so far.

I am starting at the beginning and reading every book in order and so far every book I read is better than the rest. I know some of you guys are a little critical of this and that but I got to say that these books are phenomenal.

Maybe I'm not as critical as you or my standards are not that high but I love every book. Before this the biggest thing I would read were comic books (still do - great stories) but now I enjoy reading books again.

Clive Cussler is a great author. I cannot wait to start on Dragon. I am having a hard time thinking it will be better than Treasure but so far every book surpasses the previous in my opinion.

If I were an author this would be the biggest compliment I could possibly receive. I'd trade a million best sellers or newberry awards to know that my books get people to read when they otherwise probably wouldn't.

Glad you're here and glad you enjoy the books, coach!

Infernorhythm - December 19, 2006 11:29 PM (GMT)
I read this one after Sahara, my first read. Treasure was far more straight forward and less complex, but still enjoyable. I have to agree, somethings left me hollow at the end, Hala and Dirk seemed weird (he's dating Lily, but he cheats on her with Hala, ok), Hala getting married (I don't remember her being married and not UN Secretary-General in Sahara), and the Cappestiere plot was unneeded and make no sense (so they destabilize countries, cut off trade, and charade around...for what exactly?), but the little bits made this book worth it: The flashback battle, the car chase through the mountains. Dirk, Al, and Findley's stand at a unnamed fort in a mine, and the Dirk vs. Ammar fight was great.

8/10
