Very interesting, this is the first I heard of this potential disaster.
One good thing, if it can be called that, is when a spill is detected early on, the technology is available nowadays to prevent another ecological disaster such as the Exxon Valdez (though I realize the circumstances are somewhat different here.)

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Fact Sheet stating that 106,350 gallons of oil and oily liquid have been recovered to date following the oil spill from the ATHOS I. About half of the areas impacted by oil have been “grossly decontaminated”. [Now there is an interesting term!] The Unified Command anticipates cleanup operations will continue through spring and into the summer.(HK LAW)
