“Scalpel.”
“Kelly, I need more AB neg!”
“4.0 silk.”
It was a chaotic scene. For over 40 hours, the doctors and nurses of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital had been at work, saving the life of many a wounded soldier. There had only been a few casualties at first, but then...
“Attention all personnel! More wounded arriving by chopper, bus, and ambulance! First surgical team to the compound to establish a triage,” came the announcement.
Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce looked up from the arterial transplant he was doing, “Colonel, I hate to tell you this, but I quit.”
“Don’t look at me. Klinger took a call earlier from I Corps,” replied Colonel Sherman Potter. “They said to expect quite a lot of wounded. Something about an amphibious landing.”
“Do you mean to say that I’m going to be tied up in here for God knows how long?” moaned Major Charles Winchester. “I swear I am going to get myself transferred back to Tokyo.”
“So you can sit around playing cribbage and drinking scotch?” asked Captain B.J. Hunnicutt, not looking up from the leg he was stitching up.
“Of course,” said Pierce. “That’s what Charles is for.”
“Knock it off you guys,” yelled Potter. “Now, we may be stuck in here for a long time, and I think it best that we stay on speaking terms.”
A few hours and a dozen patients later, Sergeant Max Klinger walked into the OR carrying the mailbag.
“Mail call!” he cried.
A cry rose up from the doctors, nurses, and orderlies. Mail had not reached the 4077th in over two weeks.
