Ahhhh now it makes sense. ;)
Sounds like another editorial boo-boo.I seem to remember that in the books now that you refresh my aging memory.
I seem to think it's happened in more than those two books as well.

Dirk Pitt grew up in California and your bound to pick up some spanish words there. I did when i lived in New Mexico over 30 years ago.

Have you checked out the Books section of the forum yet? There is a wealth of info in there.Including a thread on the inconsistencies in the various books. But be careful this place can get addictive ;)

I don't know if it's coincidence or something more spooky, but I was wondering along the same line of questioning last night when I was rereading the softcover of Trojan Odessey.

I'm starting to reread some Cussler books just to refresh my memory. Some of us still remember a lot of the details. And with the help of Helene Noelle and others who can catch those small things its a big help for the rest of us. Including the books section.

Do they teach Spanish in Schools in the US? Could he have learnt it there?

Nice find!
Yes, Spanish is taught in the US. Florida anyways...
Speaking of languages, doesn't Gunn know French? Remember in Sahara....

So he could have picked up enough at school to get by? det:

Kelly-
Yes Spanish is taught in elementary schools in Texas 3rd through 6th grade but it is the Castillian or proper Spanish spoken in central and southern Mexico. The border Spanish used where I am is almost it's own language and would probably be the type spoken by a maid. For instance in the border Spanish zucete means mud and there is no word in Castillian Spanish that even sounds like that. However
anyone can learn Spanish if they bounce around the planet as much as Dirk Pitt- at
least enough to get by.
For instance-
Tequila
Cerveza-Beer
Mas Tequila-more Tequila
Mas Cerveza-more beer
Policia-police
Vamos-run
Alto-stop
M-16-stop NOW!
Papels-papers
Dinero-money
Punta-bridge
Hope this helps.
