Title: Lost City
Description: Finished

whitbycolin - December 28, 2004 01:12 AM (GMT)
Hello All

Finally found the time to read Lost City. Picked it up yesterday and could barely put it down. Even for me two days is a bit of a record for one of Clive's books. Now if only I dare dive into Black Wind??

Best wishes to all, wishing all Cussler fans a Happy new year!

Regards

I just finished it a few days ago and loved it. The creatures were vividly described, as was Chateau Fauchard. th: Is there really a Lost City?

I won't deny the fact I am a "big" Dirk Pitt fan. But in the Kurt Austin adventure series, I really enjoyed reading Lost City the most. :)

Lost City was definitely my favorite in the Kurt Austin series. It really brought the team together and had some vivid imagery. And I'm going out on a limb here to say it had one of the best final few pages of any Cussler books Ive read and Ive read fifteen so far. The last scene with the three different funerals and the latin saying was just quite touching. I absolutly loved it, and I can't wait till Polar Shift, the next NUMA Files book comes out this summer.

To be perfectly honest with you (plot spoiler coming up), I loved Lost City up until the conclucion. I thought that the idea of Chateau Fauchard burning down and the three of them just waltzing out just because of that one torch being thrown was a little inflated. I thought Kurt would have to go through a little more trouble than just that. Other than that it was a great story. Cant wait for Polar shift. Serpent is still my fav though and I love the whole dog sledding scene through DC in White Death.

Have just finished reading Lost City too, loved it, but...
Did anyone else notice a couple of discrepancies?
After Kurt and Joe help the Trouts and the scientests escape from that Scottish island Kurt mentioned several times to the MI5 guy about his colleage Paul being kidnapped. But no mention of Gamay being kidnapped along with him! I thought that that was just the way the conversation went but then Kurt commented to Gamay the he didn't want to spoil her reunion with her husband. What reunion when they were together the whole time?!
There was one other piece just after this that didn't quite match up either, can't quite put my finger on it right now - it's a bit like bad continuity in a movie, sometimes you know something is wrong but you are so caught up in enjoying the story that you can't quite work out what it is that has caught your attention.
Hope I don't sound picky cos I did really enjoy this book but this bit just jarred a little.

Yes, hiramyaeger Lost City does exist. It was found back in 2000 and I'm sure if you do a search online there should be a news article about it. I read that not too long ago here in the Dayton Daily News about when it was found. go to activedayton.com maybe you can find it archived on the site.

I'm reading Lost City right now. It's actually pretty good so far. It's just that every time I read about Kurt and Joe saving the day, instead of marveling at their feat, my first reaction is "They're no Pitt and Giordino." I guess that's what happens after you read all 18 or so Pitt novels!! p:

I liked the book, BUT
I've listed everything wrong just because there are so many errors. Logic, science, grammar, spelling. This was one of the worst edited books. More like unedited.

At the beginning I had a deja vu feeling when uncontrolled spreading of plants was mentioned in the Mediterranean. I'm sure an earlier Cussler book dealt with the refuse from aquaria.

Refs to Lost City, hard bound. [Ch, pg.]
[11, 99-100] "... was bringing him up-to-date on the latest ..." up-to-date is an adjective. No hyphens here.
[11, 100] "... talked in a range that was two or three decibels above that of a normal human ..." 2-3 db is so small that no one could detect the increase.
[11, 101] " ... and his receding, curly white hair seemd ..." NO comma!
[12, 116] "... while the ship's heading back up the river." DOWN. The glacier lake is the end of the line.
[13, 128] The big man says to Renaud before killing him "I want to die." What?
[14, 131] "The French were ahead of the other countries in developing the monoplane." The Johnson brothers (of outboard motor fame) successfully designed and flew America's first monoplane on August 8, 1911.
[14, 133] Austin, examinming an underwater photo "It looks like a propeller blade." BUT [12, 112] "The propeller was gone, probably snapped off in the crash."
[18, 173] "thought" Should be 'though'.
[19, 182] Austin estimated Emil's age between 40 and 59, and his mother's age [p. 183] from 40 to 60. A realistic guess should put mother 20 years older than son.
[19, 190] The one time Fauchard was written Fouchard.
[21, 202] ""Not all," Austin said with a forced grin." NOT AT ALL.
[22, 218] Emil let out a scream and "he dropped the gun" Third next sentence - "The gun dropped to the floor ..."
[26, 255] "... killing Renaud and trying to killing us?"
[27, 267] "When his body was found his throat, had been torn open." Sure,.
[27, 269] "... would pick up traces of the Alvin ..." He means Atlantis.
[37, 345] "About a half of a mile." Never! To wordy. 'half a mile'
[39, 368] "They hung on with every once of strength." Ounce.

Did you even enjoy the book or did you read it just to pick up the minutiest of errors. Most of us just look for the glaring errors.
I applaud you for picking out all that but who cares when it's just the wrong placing of comma's?

You must be a teacher.

I might have to send the Clive Cussler Code 2 manuscript to logiclover prior to publication. ;)

I should send all of my papers for school to logiclover!! Man, you have the name for a reason don't ya'? I would have never been able to pick all of those mistakes out!

No, I'm not a teacher, but my 3 sibs are, so it's in the family.
You're right, I am a nitpicker, but those things irk me.
I did enjoy the book. Not as much as maybe 5 others [Sahara is #1], but he is always a good read that I can't put down to the detriment of my other projects, like on-line poker.
I don't blame Cussler as much as I do his editors. Are they along just for the ride?
I'll try to back off on future books.
Any comma errors in this reply!! lol
Regards.

To Mostly Heep -
I'm sure this was a facetious misuse of an apostrophe when just a plural was intended.

"I applaud you for picking out all that but who cares when it's just the wrong placing of comma's?"

I'm reading this now... When did Pitt take over NUMA and Sanddeccker become Vice Pres of the USA.

I was also confused by the Killer saying "I want to die" I reread it a couple of times to make sure I got it and I just figured it would make sense later in the book.

I'm going to be a teacher soonish but there is no way I would pick up any of that...but then I'm Physical Education & Health

Pitt took over NUMA at the end of Trojan Odyssey.
