Title: Titanic Collection Additions
boissee - December 28, 2004 02:14 PM (GMT)
I apologize in advance if I sound like I'm bragging. I was so excited about a couple of items I received for Christmas I had to run and put it on here to share with people who understand my passion for the Titanic.
My parents found this in an antique shop here in Maine this summer. The seller obviously had no idea what they had! yike:
It is a White Star Line egg cup in the turquoise 'tongues and tendril' pattern designed exclusively for the Titanic, First Class. They sold one of these at the Guernsey's auction this past June, with an estimated value of $400-500. My parents paid nowhere near this amount, because as much as they love me, that would be way out of their budget. They have quite an extensive knowledge of anitques and did an exhaustive search to verify that this item is not a reproduction. We believe it was a replacement piece. Meaning when the Titanic came back into port from a run, it would have replaced any broken pieces, except the Titanic never came back. The serial numbers match other original pieces, and the date of creation is March 1912. t:

Next item was a surprise from Julie. She picked up this book at an antique store as well. Although it's not an antique, it is valuable to me as a collector. The book is called
Polar The Tianic Bear written by Titanic survivor Daisey Spedden about her son Douglas and his bear Polar. This book was not published until 1994 when a family member found the manuscript in a trunk. I have the book, but only a 7th printing. This is a 1st edition. Thank you Julie!

It's possible I may be adding one more item today! My parents found another item in an antique shop in Kennebunk. If they can verify it is an original item, we are going to go half on it. Woo Hoo! Will keep you posted!

Awesome finds Liz! That egg cup is the coolest! I love it when you find something in an antique shop and the people don't know what they have. I hope to see your collection in person one day! I'm really happy for you. And by the way, it didn't sound like bragging at all silly! ;)

Wow... those are fascinating. I'm jealous.. to be honest I'd be bragging a bit too! I'd love to check out your virtual tour, Titanic has been a fascination of mine since early childhood. I never met her, but my great grandmother travelled steerage and survived so my family has some memorabilia I hope gets passed along to me at some point.
I also have some cool stuff myself the I'd be happy to share pictures of with you, if you wanted to include any that you don't have, including mission patches from Ballard's first expedition and another from IFREMER's expedition... I was surprised to get responses to my letters back then (on 'White Star' Stationary no less!)... guess it paid to be young and interested in Titanic. I also have an original St. Louis Post detailing the wreck but it's in pretty bad shape. Lemme know where I can find your virtual tour, I'd love to look at it!
Cheers ~ Jamie
