Title: The Fun Corner
Description: Odds and Ends

Helene Noelle - January 14, 2005 11:43 PM (GMT)
The Fun Corner is designed for general "odds and ends" observed in the adventures. Let the fun begin!

Helene Noelle - January 14, 2005 11:45 PM (GMT)
Dirk Pitt mentions that he used to tag along with dad to Washington parties and attempt to pick up congressional mistresses. Flood Tide (25)

Hmmm, he did meet Loren Smith at Washington cocktail party. Vixen 03 (1)

Her first words to Dirk Pitt:

"Mr. Pitt."
"Mr. Pitt."
"Now that you've raised the Titanic, what are you planning for your next project?"

Guess we know the path that project eventually lead too. ;)

Helene Noelle - January 14, 2005 11:51 PM (GMT)
The driver of the VW bus on the auto ferry is wearing a tie-dyed Grateful Dead T-shirt. Black Wind (18)

I started thinking about speciality T-shirts. Here are the ones that I recall in the adventures:

Dirk Pitt - RAISE THE LUSITANIA
Deep Six (22)

Al Giordino - IF YOUR EYES ARE STILL OPEN, IT AIN'T ALKALI SAM'S
(Alkali Sam's Tequilla)
Inca Gold (32)

Waiter at Charlie's Fish Dock - IF GOD MEANT TEXANS TO SKI, HE'D HAVE MADE COWSHIT WHITE
Flood Tide (32)

Rudi Gunn - ST. MARY'S PARISH, GOOD OL/ FASHION SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY
Flood Tide (40)

Mark Murphy - ARGONAUT
Fire Ice (20)

So we can post anything here, right?

Ok, has anyone got an explanation as to why Dirk Pitt is 6'2" in Raise the Titanic, but he is generally accepted as 6'3" in every other book? <_<

YES! to your first question.

Good point made in your second question. The only time Dirk Pitt shrinks an inch  is in Raise the Titanic! t: My crystal ball is a hazy, but I suspect it must have been the excitement of the adventure! j:

Helene Noelle - January 15, 2005 12:05 AM (GMT)

I just consider that height thing to be a typo in that one book ... that's what I say ...

I thought about that, except Pitt's weight was heavier than the average 185 pounds.

The submersible Sea Slug looked aerodynamically clean and smooth from her outside, but to Pitt, as he contorted his six-foot-two frame into the pilot's chair, the interior seemed a claustrophobic nightmare of hydraulic plumbing and electrical circuitry

***

Dana cried out in startled pain as she was slammed to the deck. There were no apologies from Pitt for throwing her there and then crushing the breath out of her as he used his hundred and ninety pounds for a protective shield

Kellym - January 15, 2005 01:00 PM (GMT)
Maybe he was bare-foot in RTT that would make him at least an inch shorter

Helene Noelle - January 23, 2005 03:52 PM (GMT)
Ever notice how Clive Cussler likes to use Modus Operandi.

There was to little fear from a Sunday swimmer or a diving tourist discovering my little modus operandi. The Mediterranean Caper (17)

Zeegler nodded in agreement. "Your story, Captain, fits the same crude modus operandi, if you will, of at least twenty other attacks in the last two months."
Vixen 03 (14)

Most murderers followed a pattern, developed a routine modus operandi, preferred a particular weapon. Gly's pattern was that he didn't have one. Every kill was completely different in execution from the last. He left no strings to connect himself with the past. Night Probe! (33)

"I've poured through old crime reports here and in Canada trying to connect their modus operandi with later unsolved murders, but they passed into oblivion along with Jack the Ripper." Night Probe! (66)

"If you've pegged Qin Shang's modus operandi," Stewart said happily, "we're halfway there." Flood Tide (29)

Giordino played his beam over the rockfall. "Their modus operandi. They have a fetish for blowing up tunnels." Atlantis Found (15)

Helene Noelle - January 23, 2005 03:56 PM (GMT)
Giordino's lines about Pitt's driving/flying/piloting really make me

For example,

"Whoever told you that you could loop a PBY?"
"It seemed like the thing to do at the time."
The Mediterranean Caper (1)

Helene Noelle - January 23, 2005 03:56 PM (GMT)
Giordino - "Do you have to hit everything that comes across your path?" Shock Wave (28)

Helene Noelle - January 23, 2005 03:57 PM (GMT)
"I have to tell you," Giordino said with a slight grin, "your docking technique leaves much to be desired."

"Give me another hour of practice and I'll get the hang of it," Pitt replied in a tone barely above a whisper.
Flood Tide (45)

Helene Noelle - January 23, 2005 03:59 PM (GMT)
"What happened to you?" Pitt asked.

"Some guy I know can't drive a boat. I was thrown all over the engine compartment and bounced my head off a water pipe during a series of wild gyrations."

Then Giordino spotted the unconscious body of the guard lying partially in the door. "My sincerest apologies. You had a social caller."
Atlantis Found (31)

The leader of the Bounty mutineers was Fletcher Christian. Shockwave refers to the Bounty quite often. I wonder if Clive made Maeve's surname Fletcher on purpose.

It might of been the pressure of the depths that he was working that cause Dirk to have a temporary shrinkage (kinda like clothes after they get washed).

harrisonts - January 24, 2005 05:02 AM (GMT)
One of my favorite recurring occurances is the fact that Clive makes mentions of the Denver Broncos (i know i remember three times), and the Denver Nuggets (at least once). I understood the connection once i realized that Clive split his time between Denver and N. Arizona.

Great observation Lat! th: ;) th:

The mutiny on the Bounty is referred to several times (The Legacy, 15).

Maeve does "disown" the Dorsett family and runs away to Melbourne, Australia. She legally changes her name to her ancestral grandmother's maiden name - Fletcher (10).

harrisonts, one reference to the Denver Broncos comes to my mind. Al Giordino wonders if he can get tickets to a Bronco when he finds out they are going to Denver, Colorado. Treasure (22)

i have not most of the books in a while. the is another line in sahara, i believe, when they are on the calypso heading up river, where Giordino states he wished the Broncos line were with them (him and Pitt).

Helene Noelle - February 4, 2005 09:44 AM (GMT)
harrisonts, you are right, Al Girodino makes the remark while cruising along on the Calliope with Dirk Pitt and Rudi Gunn.

"I'd feel a whole lot better if we had the Stars and Stripes, the State Department, Ralph Nader, the Denver Broncos, and a company of Marines behind us."
Sahara (12)

Helene Noelle - February 4, 2005 09:48 AM (GMT)
snor: Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino thoughts when it comes to horses. co:

"Judging from the terrain, we may have to trade the boat for camels if we expect to see home again."
"Oh God!" Giordino groaned. "Can you picture me riding a freak of nature? A reasonable man who believes the only reason God put horses on earth is for background in western movies." Sahara (13)

Billy reached down a hand. "My village not far. You can ride on back of my horse."
Pitt hesitated. He definitely preferred mechanical means of transportation. To his way of thinking four wheels were better than four hooves any day. The only useful purpose for horses was as background in western movies. Inca Gold (44)

Helene Noelle - February 4, 2005 09:51 AM (GMT)
"You should meet my boss, Admiral Sandecker. He and Shylock were bosom buddies." Shock Wave (16)

Shylock was a character in "The Merchant of Venice" by Shakespeare. And John Merchant worked for the Dorsett family in Shock Wave. det:

Helene Noelle - February 20, 2005 08:55 PM (GMT)
A few fun lines in the same vein:

"Can Aunt Jemima make pancakes?"
Deep Six (23)

"Could John Wayne ride a horse?"
Sahara (55)

"Does McDonalds have golden arches?"
Black Wind (19)

I don't know how to explain the height, but as for the weight, people's weight does change over time. Maybe Dirk got into the whole diet fad early. <_< Nah.

Can anyone recall Dirk's favorite brand of Champagne? I just read the line and am wondering if anyone remembers it. Hint: It consists of 7 words and only two of them are pronounceable.

Helene, you might want to add this to the DP profile on your site.

I will take heed to your suggestion. Some other people have requested that I include the alcohoic beverages Dirk Pitt likes to drink on my site.

 I was trying to remember this favorite drink of Dirk's recently when I was writing one of my fan fiction stories but did not remember what book it was mentioned in. Personally, I have never had any and do not understand it's appeal. Personally a drink of beer will do for me or an occasional whiskey sour. p:

Helene Noelle - January 14, 2006 08:07 PM (GMT)
Clive Cussler based the character of Al Giordino on his Air Force buddy Al Giordano. A play on their names is made in two of the adventures.

"The search is already under way."
"I heard nothing -"
"About a search effort?" Seagram finished. "Not likely that you would. Until the operation becomes unwieldy in terms of security. Even your special assistant special projects director, Albert Giordano -"
"Giordino."
""Yes, Giordino, thank you. He is at this very moment piloting a search probe across the Atlantic sea floor in total ignorance of his true mission."
Raise the Titanic (25)

You don't seem to get it, Mr. Giordano."
"Giordino."
"Whatever," Hargrove muttered indifferently.
