Title: The People Clive Cussler Refers to in the Books
Description: Both Fictitious and Real!

Helene Noelle - January 15, 2005 01:28 AM (GMT)
I decided not to open this topic with an ABC listing of names. Some names are only mentioned once in the adventures, others are mentioned more than a couple of times.

I do admit that my study is still in progress. But if you are curious about a particular name, please feel free to inquire. If you have information to share about a name mentioned in this section, please feel free to join in.

The random journey to explore the names begins!

Helene Noelle - January 15, 2005 01:32 AM (GMT)
Al Capone Nickname: "Scarface"

"That's me, one of big Al Capone's torpedoes, fresh off the boat from Chicago." Pacific Vortex! (3)

"... . Hiram Lusana makes Al Capone and Jesse James look like sissies. ..."
Vixen 03 (29)

"I can't say I'm thrilled to me you, Mr. Suma. "It's difficult not to admire your entrepreneurial talents, but your methods of operation fall somewhere between Al Capone and Freddie from Elm Street." Dragon (46)

"It's crazy. I'm not going."
"Me neither," snorted Giordino. I look as French as Al Capone."
Sahara (11)

"My little friend here is Al Capone." Atlantis Found (30)

"Wes, you have to put together a team at Justice whose loyalty you can absolutely depend on to build an airtight case. People who are not afraid of threats, like the Untouchables who put away Al Capone...."
Valhalla Rising (43)

Umealiq - "Scarface" White Death

Clive Cussler's dad saw Al Capone on the courthouse steps in Chicago.
CC and DP Revealed p. 20

Helene Noelle - January 15, 2005 01:34 AM (GMT)
Charles Lindbergh

Pitt began to have a vague idea if what Charles Lindbergh's thoughts must have been when he urged his heavily laden Spirit of St. Louis off the muddy runway of Roosevelt Field back in 1927. Iceberg (19)

"Wouldn't dream of it. You're going to the biggest-man-on-campus since Lindbergh when you drop out of the blue." Cyclops (23)

She [Ford Tri-motor] flew the New York-to-Chicago leg and carried many of the celebrities of he day - Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., and Mary Pickford. Valhalla Rising (23)

Helene Noelle - January 15, 2005 01:38 AM (GMT)
Errol Flynn

"Nice going," Pitt said. "Errol Flynn couldn't have made a more dramatic entrance." The Mediterranean Caper (18)

Errol Flynn moustache. [Tom Clark] Cyclops (65)

Pitt - "Actually, I had Errol Flynn against Basil Rathbone more in mind."Dragon (52)

Giordino - "If you could have only seen yourself in that Pillsbury Doughboy suit playing Errol Flynn with a pipe as a sword." Flood Tide (54)

Pitt passed the knife to Giordino, who studied it morosely. "Why can't I have the gun?"
"You're the one who always watches old Errol Flynn movies."
Valhalla Rising (19)

Austin could have passed for a Hollywood buccaneer in an Errol Flynn movie. Serpent (10)

Helene Noelle - January 29, 2005 09:06 PM (GMT)
A master adventurer in the mode of Errol Flynn, Converse had sailed Tz'u-hsi from Newport Beach on a round-the-world cruise and was now running the final leg across the Pacific, passing within fifty kilometers of Howland Island, Amelia Earhart's destination when she disappeared in 1937.
Shock Wave (12)

"... They must have created Hunt's ship and crew after watching too many old Errol Flynn movies."
Trojan Odyssey (21)

Helene Noelle - January 29, 2005 09:12 PM (GMT)
Frankenstein

...fog...like an old Frankenstein flick...
Pacific Vortex! (10)

"Let's disappear before Frankenstein recovers."
The Mediterranean Caper (11)

You jumped Frankenstein before I was ready.
The Mediterranean Caper (15)

"...Frankenstein's monster..."
Raise the Titanic! (31)

"A memory injection," Oates murmured wonderingly. "So there really is a Dr. Frankenstein."
Deep Six (59)

"...the feet encased in Frankenstein-style weighted boots. ..."
Cyclops (21)

She shook her head. "Cloths only. My Frankenstein sister threw me on the raft without so much as my lipstick."
Shock Wave (32)

In the Frankenstein world of genetic engineering...
Black Wind (32)

Frankenfish
White Death (22)

Professor Throckmorton is referred to as Dr. Frankenstein.
White Death (22)

Iceberg: last page before the epilogue.

Talking to Pitt at the denoument:

"Castile was nicked in the arm," Lazard said. "After we cold cocked those two clowns in the stern seat, I turned and saw you playing Errol Flynn on the bridge......"

Helene Noelle - February 20, 2005 08:23 PM (GMT)
Arnold Schwarzenegger

"I'll be back."
Cyclops (57)

"How far to the boarder?" asked Steinholm in English with an Arnold Schwarzenegger accent.
Sahara (54)

The waiter turned and began walking toward the kitchen, but not before he looked at them and said, "I'll be back."
"I hope he doesn't think he's Arnold Schwarzenegger and drives a car through the wall," Giordino muttered.
Flood Tide (32)

No humans numbering less than four Arnold Schwarzeneggers could have broken the links of the chains or pulled them out of the stone.
Trojan Odyssey (46)

"We'll be back."
"You sounded like the Terminator in there, " said Zavala.
Serpent (8)

Helene Noelle - February 20, 2005 08:38 PM (GMT)
Fu Manchu

Bruno von Till stood on the deck of the submarine, grinning like Fu Manchu about to feed a victim to the crocodiles.
The Mediterranean Caper (16)

"Sheer babble-he's delirious." The shrewd, calculating Fu Manchu look had returned tot he old German's face.
The Mediterranean Caper (17)

"I have no idea where all this is taking you, but please be careful. Fu Manchu might get wise you're on to his scent and lay in ambush."
Deep Six (31)

Fu Manchu by Sax Rohmer
Deep Six (31)

"Maybe he's Fu Manchu reincarnated," said Pitt lightly.
Flood Tide (3)

Giordino gave a menacing Fu Manchu squint to his eyes and went back to his book.
Atlantis Found (29)

Fu Manchu mustache - Black Wind (4, 26)
"Our Fu Manchu friend, Tongju...." - Black Wind (34)
"The Fu Manchu character standing in the center. His name is Tongju...." - Black Wind (62)

Helene Noelle - February 20, 2005 11:22 PM (GMT)
Amelia Earhart

"Mannock, a famous lady flier, Australian s I recall. Her disappearance became one of aviation's greatest mysteries, second only to that of Amelia Earhart."
Sahara (42)

Thousands of secrets are buried away in the seemingly unending archival storage bins of the depository. For some strange reason, known only to certain very few bureaucrats, entire sections of the depository hold classified material and objects that will never be revealed to the public. The bones of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan and Japanese records of their execution on Saipan, the secret conspiracy files of both Kennedy assassinations, the intelligence of Soviet sabotage behind American space rocket and shuttle accidents and the retaliation at Chernobyl, staged films of the Apollo moon landing hoax, and much, much more-it was all filed away, never to see the light of day.
Sahara (49)

A master adventurer in the mode of Errol Flynn, Converse had sailed Tz'u-shi from Newport Beach on a round-the-world cruise and was now running the final leg across the Pacific, passing within fifty kilometers of Howland Island, Amelia Earhart's destination when she disappeared in 1937.
Shock Wave (12)

From outside, the former aircraft-maintenance hangar that was built in 1937, the year Amelia Earhart disappeared, appeared forlorn and deserted.
Flood Tide (24)

"Good thingking," agreed Giodino. "I do not wish to go off and perish in a quagmire and become a mystery like Amelia Earhart."
Flood Tide (29)

Gunn peered at Giordino through his thick glasses. "I do pray," he said placidly, "that we are not following in the footsteps of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan.
Atlantis Found (15)

She [Ford Tri-motor] flew the New York-to-Chicago leg and carried many of the celebrities of he day-Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., and Mary Pickford.
Franklin Roosevelt chartered her to fly to the Democratic Convention in Chicago.
Valhalla Rising (23)

Helene Noelle - February 20, 2005 11:26 PM (GMT)
Captain [William] Bligh

"That's the best I can do for you, Major, until you stop running up and down the deck, shouting orders like Captain Bligh."
The Mediterranean Caper (8)

Giordino - "How about it, Captain Bligh. Shall I reel in the camera."
Vixen 03 (9)

"I thought mutiny went out with the Bounty."
Deep Six (32)

For the next four hours, Giordino drove his crew with the heavy hand of a Captain Bligh.
Night Probe! (41)

"Is the skipper handy?"
"He's on the bridge playing Captain Bligh, lashing the crew in an attempt to set a speed record. Another knot and our rivets will start falling out."
Inca Gold (9)

"A replay of the mutiny on the Bounty."
Shock Wave (15)

tonym5 - November 2, 2005 05:05 PM (GMT)
May I ask what kind of job you have Rob? Sitting at the beach? And I thought I had it made with working at home assembling metal parts for the plastics industry. Way to go Rob. th:

Mostly Heep - November 2, 2005 11:34 PM (GMT)
Actually I was a courier driver and my route was so easy that I usually had a two hour *lunch* break that I would use to good advantage.
That was until last thursday when my boss and I had an argument and he told me to go home....so I did  I'm taking this week off and I have a few prospects already lined up for next week.

sharkluver22 - November 3, 2005 04:20 PM (GMT)
Well, at least you have prospects... Nice job with all of that information though!!
