Title: Your Cussler Collection?
Description: Books that is!

JamieNYY - February 1, 2005 01:39 AM (GMT)
Just wondering what you all have collected over the years. I have been collecting for about 20 years and have amassed a nice shelf full that I listed below. Just wondering if anyone else is as anal retentive with getting first print hardcovers as I am? :)

I just included title, year published, publisher, print issue, condition, binding type... HC (hardcover), PB (paperback), tSC (trade softcover), and tHC (trade hardcover). In some cases I listed any unique attributes such as signatures! .

Mayday: 2003 Time Warner - reprint - PB - New (hopefully I can upgrade this to a first print hardcover at some point)
The Mediterranean Caper: 1996 Simon and Shuster - First Print - tHC - fair/good (this will be replaced when $ permits)
Iceberg: 1996 Pocket Books - high print # - PB - Good/VG
Raise the Titanic: 1976 Viking - 'first print' (book club edition) - HC - good/VG (this too will be upgraded to non book club edition when $ permits)
Vixen 03: 1978 Viking - first print - HC - VG/New
Night Probe: 1981 Bantam - first print - HC - Good/VG (I'll probably upgrade this to a better conditioned copy at some point)
Pacific Vortex: 1977 Bantam - First Print PB - decent/fair - not great condition but has that typo so I'm keeping it!
%Pacific Vortex: 2000 Cahill - first U.S. HC print - HC - New - signed by CC
Deep Six: 1984 Simon and Schuster - first print - HC - VG/New
Cyclops: 1986 Simon and Schuster - first print - HC - VG/New
Treasure: 1988 Simon and Schuster - first print - HC - VG/New
Dragon: 1990 Simon and Schuster - first print - HC - VG/New
Sahara: 1992 Simon and Schuster - first print - HC - VG/New
Inca Gold: 1994 Harper-Collins - first print - HC - VG/New
The Mediterranean Caper and Iceberg: 1995 Simon and Schuster - first print - HC - VG/New
Shockwave: 1996 Simon and Schuster - fiirst print - HC - VG/New
The Sea Hunters: 1996 Simon and Schuster - first print - HC - New
Flood Tide: 1997 Simon and Schuster - first print - HC - VG/New
Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt Revealed: 1998 Pocket Books - first print - PB - good/VG
Serpent: 1999 Pocket Books - first print - tSC - VG/New
*Serpent: 1999 'Private Press' - first print tHC - New - signed by CC and PK - Presentation Copy
Atlantis Found: 1999 Putnam - first print - HC - New - signed by CC
Blue Gold: 2000 Pocket Books - first print - tSC - VG/New
*Valhalla Rising: 2001 Cahill - first print - tHC - New - signed by CC (numbered)
Valhalla Rising: 2001 Putnam - 'first' print - HC - VG/New
Valhalla Rising: 2002 Berkley - first US paperback - PB - New
Fire Ice: Putnam 2002 - first print - HC - VG/New
*Fire Ice: Cahill 2002 - 'first' print' - tHC - New - signed by CC and PK (numbered)
The Sea Hunters 2: Putnam 2002 - first print - HC - VG/New
*White Death: Cahill 2003 - first print - HC - New - signed by CC and PK (numbered)
White Death: 2003 Putnam - 'first' print - HC - New
Golden Buddha: 2003 Berkley - first print - tSC- VG/New
%Golden Buddha: 2003 Cahill - 'first print' - tHC - New - signed by CC (1 of 10,000)
Trojan Odyessy: 2003 Putnam - first print - HC - New
Lost City: 2004 Putnam - first print - HC - New
Sacred Stone 2004 Berkley - first print - tSC- VG/New
Black Wind 2004 Putnam - first print - new

Note: all titles described as "VG/New" have been read once and left on my shelf since the day they came out for the most part and still look as if they could be on a store shelf as brand new. All listed as"New" are unread by anyone. All others are just my opinion on condition, which might differ from your opinion.

% before a title denotes a signed Cahill Trade edition.
* before a title denotes a leather slipcased, marbled board, signed hardcover.

Signature indications:
CC = Clive Cussler (duh!)
PK = Paul Kemprecos

YES, I am a bit nutty and kind of a Cussler freak! It would be nice to know I am in sympathetic company around here! :)

Anyone else attempting to get a first print hardcover set? I'm well on my way now! Just need that Dodd Meade Iceberg which is WAY out of my proce range now, as is a first print hardcover MayDay. I'd also like to add the 'private press' Blue Gold but it's gonna take me a month or so to save up the $200... that will give me VG or better editions of just about every Cussler first edition or first print issue hardcover. The Iceberg included in the The Mediterranean Caper and Iceberg combo hardcover will have to suffice until I get a better job to get a Dodd Meade. I also plan on adding leather slipcased, marbled board, signed hardcovers of The Sea Hunters 2, Black Wind, and Golden Buddha when money permits! Plus, I hear a few more like that are coming out in March... woohoo! Lastly I found that triple signed Black Wind at a decent price and plan on grabbing that next week.... probably get the UK edition soon too because I like the artwork better!

Damn that was a lot of typing and formatting! Feel free to cut and paste, just wondering what kind of collections other board members have since I am sure many dwarf mine in quantity, diversity, and quality.

Edit: all that formatting was tough but two mistakes wasn't bad!... Finally all done, and free of typos and formatting errors, at least to the best of my reading skills :)

Hehe... I actually started the thread so I could see what others had. Especially guys like that... it'd be nice to know how my collection stacks up because I am sure theirs all dwarf mine... as does your 150+ volume set! ;) I'm happy with it though, I just need a new shelf sometime soon since I plan on adding some more 'expensive' ones! To be honest I wish I had an airtight glass case to display them all in! :)

Empress - February 1, 2005 02:24 AM (GMT)
Yes, but remember I have the white trash collection. Some of my books are cool and some are a dime a dozen. :)

Julie,

I have older Paperback editions of Night Probe, The Mediterranean Caper, Deep Six, and Iceberg, as well as a hardcover first print Vixen 03 (minus a dustjacket) that are collecting dust on my 'give-away' shelf. If you would like them please eMail me your mailing address and I will send them to you as a gift... I'd rather see them go to another fan. Feel free to let me know if you want them :)

You seem too honest to steal from a library IMHO!

There's a big shocker <_<

Couldn't resist that one!

Come one, you got at least one nice book and a RTT game.

Like Julie said, Tony and Dave's collection dwarf most peoples collections on this forum. I don't have the energy to list all the Clive stuff I have now, so I'll highlight...

A personal handwritten letter, Press releases, Raise the Titanic Game with pieces still in package, Doxa stuff (no actual Doxa though), CC autographs not in books, and of course, lots of books. Some nice, some really nice, some not so nice. Used bookstores are my new friends to find CC collectibles. The Dodd Mead however, still eludes me. Got $2000 to lend?

JamieNYY - February 1, 2005 03:15 AM (GMT)
Julie: eMail me your mailing address and the Vixen will go out ASAP as a gift for your continued kindness. jgravius@gmail.com

Hope you both are well :)

I used to think I had a pretty decent collection going... until I found this forum that is. I have one copy of all the DP books, except Night Probe and Vixen03. My most recent addition is a softcover RTT that I added last month. I have hardcovers of VR, TO, BW and Sea Hunters II. Who knows, a couple of those might even be first editions!

Three of the hardcovers have been gifts from my older brother. Most of the softovers I picked up at a flea market, and the others have pretty much just come randomly from used book stores or Borders. The RTT I found in an airport bookstore. I know, I don't even feel worthy to consider myself a collector anymore. Sigh. cop:

Cussler Collecting

JamieNYY - February 1, 2005 05:30 AM (GMT)
Pardon my broken French but holy censored Dave. Thats quite an extensive and amazing collection. Someday I too hope to have many more of those on your list. I'm officially jealous, that just plain makes mine look like a childs book shelf! Hope all is well!

Oswalder: that's how I started too.

How long ago did you start collecting and actually have steady uncome to support the habit? Also, if it is not too personal... how much did that set cost you since I assume many were bought on the release day!

All the Best ~ Jamie

Cusslermen - February 1, 2005 05:40 AM (GMT)
My collection started with the release of The Mediterranean Caper in 1973... I kind of tell the story of how I got started on the home page of the Cusslermen website...

Unlike those who got hooked on Cussler's novels in recent years, I had to wait 2, 3 or 4 years between releases, anxiously waiting each new release.

Little did I know that my addiction would grow to such an enjoyable hobby. And some of my best friends are fellow Cussler collectors that I've met over the years.

Cheers,
Dave

JamieNYY - February 1, 2005 06:58 AM (GMT)
I believe I've read your website, its great I enjoyed a lot of the books section particularly.

I got hoooked by RTT in 1986 and he was only up to Deep Six at that point.. so i did some waiting myself. Up until relatively i just bought his books when they came out in hardcover the first day. It didn't really become a 'hobby' until somewhere until the last sixth moths or so......ie getting nice copierd od first issues/first prinys, collecting signed copies, limited prints, eyt, etc. It's a fun, albiet expensive hobby that I now in a position have fun with. School was rough in terms of being broke and being able to buy much, but I made it and am now debt free except necessities. Thus the newer honny!

Before this I collected legal 'bootleg' cds and DVD's. I just loved collecting all kinds of music and having many concerts I have ettended on CD. Which reminds me if nyone is into rock and roll I have a ton of stuff from the Beatles to Dave Matthews, probably close to 5000 discs on around 1000 different shows. I can send you a list and can either let you download them from my FTP server or you can mail me blank discs and a retune postage paid SASE and I will spin them for you and drop it at the PO in a day or two tops.

SEVERAL HUNDRED BOOKS?!?!? I haven't read several hundred books in my 23 years of living. That is very impressive, Dave. Has Dr. Cussler thanked you for personally keeping him in business?

Coincidentally I've only been reading DP books for about 11 years now, and probably didn't start "collecting" them (I have to use that term very loosely now  ) for another year or so after I read my first book, RTT. Of course, I'm still in grad school with 10+ years of tuition loans waiting patiently for me to finish, so I do not anticipate making a run for collector of the year anytime soon. para:

I have my dream job, so I'm content to have the education I have and not have student loans so I can spend all my hard earned money on ebay. yike: I have expanded my collection since last posting. One of these days I'll finish cataloging it. Still nowhere near Dave or Tony though! I might be able to fill say 10 boxes.... only 99 to go!

I want to say a HUGE Thank You to Julie and Kelly for helping complete my Cussler collection. By "complete" I really only mean I will soon have at least one copy of every DP book, both Sea Hunters, and the CC Code. I do not have enough room on my shelf, though, and am going to have to get creative or move some other books somewhere else.

Thank you ladies! :) :) beer:
