Six missing as cargo ship disappears off Japan

TOKYO, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Six Ukrainian crew members were missing on Wednesday after a Maltese-registered cargo ship apparently sank off the coast of Japan, the coast guard said.

Fourteen of the 22-strong crew were rescued by military helicopters, a coast guard spokesman said, while two more had been spotted in the water and would be airlifted to safety shortly.

The coast guard received an emergency signal at 6:20 a.m. (2120 GMT) from the 22,000-tonne Aurelia, which was close to Chichijima, an island 1,000 km (620 miles) south of Tokyo.

A coast guard plane was searching the area but had been unable to locate the ship, which is thought to have sunk, the coast guard said.

The ship was heading for the Japanese port of Shimonoseki with a cargo of zinc ore, Kyodo news agency reported.

Nothing is known yet about what happened. I'm sure it will take a few days of talking to the crew to figure that out.
