Title: Dirk Pitt's .45
Description: I saw one like it

I was recently at a gun & sports show and happened upon an old Colt 1911A1 pistol. It was made in 1913, saw action in both World Wars, and was used by an Alaskan trapper for a number of years before retiring and selling it to the exhibitor who now has it. I held it, wondering the people who held it before me, and more chilling the people who died from the 'business end' of it. It also made me think of the trusty .45 that Pitt always has. The two pistols share the same background in the WWI and WWII sense, it was even well worn but in good shape as in Pitt's Colt.
If I had the money I would have picked it up for the sense of having a unique piece of history. The man wanted $950 in Canadian funds for it, and said he turned down an offer of $750 in American funds. That was just outside my price range. I thought some Dirk Pitt fans might find this interesting, as I sure did. Cheers! ;)

I sold my 1911 about five years ago. You can find them for much cheaper than the price you quoted:

I have several 1911A1s, Five to be exact.

All are high end target pistols, one has a Dworak .22 Conversion on it. Three have electronic sights on them and are for Wadcutter ammo. The Last my favorite has adjustable open sights (iron sights), This one is for regular round nose ammo.

The balance of a 1911A1 is nothing short of amazing. By they way above open sight 1911A1 was about $1800 plus. It was tested for about 2" group of 10shots at 50yds with a ransom rest with round nose factory 230gr ammo.

All of the above were custom built.

I love 1911s .45s.

I picked up a book in Wales on Ocean Liners and there was an article in it about a gun like this that was supposedly the one shot by Harold Lowe on the Titanic. I'll have to dig it out. Went for a whole lot more than $950!!! :o

I kind of like that Cussler didn't get too deep into the description of Pitt's "trusty old Colt .45."

So if anyone has a Colt of any vintage, it could pretty much be Pitt's Colt.

I have a 1911 made in 1912 as well as several other versions. But so long as it's a Colt, you're good!

I have a Colt 1911 I purchased recently. It was around $600.

Springfield Arms also makes them, and they are about $500.

I love mine....maybe the best handgun ever made and most importantly,
it's ALL BUSINESS.

Didn't Dirk get his .45 from his dad, who got it when he was in WWII ?

I had a 1911 when I lived in NC years ago. I loved that pistol. Dead stock, I paid about $450 from a neighbor. He had a laser site mounted to the trigger guard. Usless piece of garbage. Everyshot would make the laser bounce so bad, you'd have to re-site it every 16 rounds or so. The iron sites were very accurate.

Two changes from stock... A smoother trigger, and nicer grips. The stock trigger will tear your finger up after about 50 rounds.

Very sad when I sold it before moving back to New Jersey.
