Title: Beta Readers?
LdyStacie - February 23, 2005 09:10 AM (GMT)
What are the contest rules on Beta Readers? Can I have one or two people to beta read my entry before I submit it? And if so who would like to beta read it for me? Who are the judges? If we are allowed to have beta readers, I would like for one or two people who are not in the contest and who are not judges to beta read it for me. I will of course get my hubby to beta it for me before I submit it, but I would also like some others input before I submit it to the group. I have not read any of the fanfiction yet. Since the contest was going on when I found this page, I wanted to write my entry before I read anyone else's. I'm not sure how you do your disclaimers, so I just did it the way we do it over in the The Young Riders and Highlander fandoms.

Uh, Ma, she's taw-kin' all funny like...

Ok, Since I'm not sure what you didn't understand, I'm going to explain as best I can some terms that I used in my orrginal post that you might not have heard before.
A Beta Reader is kinda like an editor. Someone who makes sure you have the characters in character, catch typos and such.
Disclamers is the legal part of fanfiction where you say that you don't own certian characters and such but someone else does. (In this case Clive Cussler owns Dirk Pitt and Summer Moran.)
Highlander was a movie and a tv serries based on the movie.
The Young Riders was a wetren that aired on ABC in the late 80's and early 90's
Fandom is a group of internet users that have the tv show, movie, etc. in comon. This would be considered the Clive Cussler Fandom.
Did I explain everything that you didn't understand? I'm sorry if my use of these terms confused you guys. The HL (Highlander) Fandom was the first thing I found online when I got internet service back in the mid-90's. These terms were thrown about and I just thought that every fandom used them as well.

Thanks for clearing that up.I had never heard of Beta Reader before either
Some of us are a little slow around here
And some of us have a very strange sense of humor,it may take a while to get acclimated.

I just forget that not everybody knows the terms used in the TYR and Hl fandoms is all. It's not that you are slow, it's just that I'm new here and I slid into using the terms that I know and forgot that the terms of each Fandom are different is all. See there I go again. TYR is short for The Young Riders.

Ummm.........nope I'm pretty sure I'm slow  But thanks for the explanation and small boost of confidence ;)

HEEP!
:P
To answer your ?s, Lady S, the contest, such as it is, is very informal and there is absolutely no reason to worry about legal proprieties. If you are concerned about one of us ripping you off, I expect all you need do is ask nicely. That Heep fella might try something--he's a pirate that one p: aaaarrr--but mostly it's just folk writing stuff in the Clive Cussler vein.
As to edibetators? I'm not sure anyone has been that picky. I'd offer to, since I know lots of big words an' I'm purty smart, too, but I've already entered, and I'd probably try to sandbag you.
Oh, and since I've got the hazing out of the way...welcome aboard!!!

Ok since no one else is picky about staying in character, I guess hubby will have to do. (He is picky and demanded that I not butcher the characters.) He is at work right now and I expect him home anytime from now until 7 tonight. That's retail management for you! He went in at 6 AM and I have no idea when he will get home. They have a truck that came in today and he has to get everything where it's supposed to be before he can come home. So no tellin' when that will be. But hopefully I will be able to post it sometime tonight.
Oh and thanks for the welcome! BTW, I'm used to pirates being that I am a Reniassance Reinactor. :P p: Of course the Pirate would bow to me, since I'm a Nobel Lady. kel:

Oh great another one I have to bow to.
As if a Queen and an Empress aren't bad enough.

LdyStacie I am an old pirate but have kept a secret since i joined. (I can be picky in certain things but have held my tongue because I myself have not been perfect). But if I make a typo and its slips by me in the initial edit I usually catch it later. That's the way it works when you post. You see an edit button and I suggest you use it a lot before you make your final post. My wife calls me mr. webster because I am a stickler for spelling. So have fun and I am thankful to learn more internet terms. Have fun! And take advantage of the games in the general category or if there's a new subject that's related to Cussler or anything in the realm of books generally you can create all kinds of topics to discuss about. w:
