Title: Beyond Fan Fiction
Description: A Writer's Workshop
Nick Kismet - March 14, 2005 11:47 PM (GMT)
I’m looking for writers who are serious about wanting to write marketable fiction, to join me for a few weeks of round table discussions and informal story developments.
Special attention will be given to character development, concept design, story outline, and most importantly, finishing what you start. Marketing and publishing strategies will also be discussed.
This is not about fan fiction, folks. It's about developing your hobby into something more. Writing is the easy part. If you've always wanted to write an adventure novel, here's your chance.
Post here or PM me for more information.

That sounds very intriguing Sean! I'd love to hear more about it!

ooops, forgot to mention the most important part....
This will probably happen in July, so there's plenty of time to plan for it. If you've got some ideas you've been kicking around, write 'em down somewhere and let them percolate.
It will be an online discussion, sort of like a distance learning class, probably in a Yahoo group, but ideally I'd like to have some live chat sessions set up. I will be establishing an agenda, but like I said before, one of the chief goals is producing a FINISHED novel.
And beyond that...well, you'll just have to wait an see.

I'm interested because of my desire to be published. It's just a matter of self-disciplining myself to write. (If that's possible). My grammar may not be perfect in writing but I do have ideas of books I want to write. And if your interested in reading some of my writing check out my tonym5.net site.

hiramyaegar - April 14, 2005 10:48 PM (GMT)
I would be interested. Definetly. I need to finish my story.
LdyStacie - May 28, 2005 11:37 PM (GMT)
I would be interested. I have a huge problem with coming up with and orrginal idea. I seem to bounce off of other people. (Like my favorite TV shows. I have this one character that I will have do some modifications on because a lot of who she is, comes from some one who I used to write with in a Fanfiction Role Playing Game. I would love to take her and put her in a story of my own, but I have no ideas.

Here's what I've got in mind--in a nutshell: Literary Boot Camp!
I'm going to be off playing soldier for the next three weeks, but I hope to spend some of the slack time working out a schedule for how it will proceed.
My ultimate goal is for everyone involved to produce (or at least begin to produce) a novel-length (at least 60K words) original work of fiction which, after extensive peer editing, can be submitted to a POD publisher (I favor Publish America because the author doesn't have to lay out one red cent)
What does that mean? Everyone who participates and gives it their all, will very likely end up with a published novel! I personally think that sounds pretty cool. Beyond that, I hope to establish, with a little help, an online bookstore for all of these, which will hopefully generate some crossover sales.
It's an ambitious vision to be sure, but the foundation to make it happen has already been laid. The hard part is developing the discipline to put your ideas on paper (figuratively) and a thick skin to take some real constructive criticism.
look for more info toward the end of June!

Wow! I'm gonna have to do some intensive research for my one idea or go with an easier idea for a novel.
Nick Kismet - June 3, 2005 09:24 PM (GMT)
your first assignment:
So you want to write a novel--or maybe start your own adventure novel series? Think you can be the next Clive Cussler? Puh-leez!
Seriously though, if you are interested in participating in this online workshop, here's your first assignment.
Pick a book--any book will do, but ideally it should be your favorite example of the kind of fiction you want to write. Now, go back and read it one more time (even if you know it backwards and forwards) and look at it critically. What did the author do right? and what did he or she do wrong? what would you have done to improve it?
Then, write a detailed synopsis of the book and it's main characters--not just a paragraph or two, but a detailed description of their appearance, personality, habits, foibles, etc. Focus primarily on the protagonist and antagonist--for example, in a Dirk Pitt novel, you'd want to write about Dirk and the villain, but also Al, the heroine, and maybe a few of the other important characters--anyone you think is important to the story. And don't fudge on this just because everyone else probably already knows who these characters are; the purpose of this exercise isn't to write a commercial for your book, but rather to acquaint you with the elements that make the story work. Lastly, include you critical comments.
Pay attention to grammar, spelling and format; the technical details are important too.
Put it in word.doc or rtf format and email it to: kismetbooks@yahoo.com
I will be using these emails to establish the mailing list for the workshop. You'll hear from me right around the end of June. Looking forward to working with you all!
