They just found a Japanese submarine off of the coast of Hawaii that was the exact submarine discussed in the book and it was designed for the same purpose! This is not a joke! Clive, you are amazing!

Clive and Dirk very obviously knew of the Sen-toku subs and their mission before writing "Black Wind." Incorporating elements of true history has always been and will continue to be a hallmark of the Cussler style.

did you know that the US navy scuttled all the big jap subs after the war to prevent the soviets from gaining there designs?.
and the ones off hawaii are not the only ones they scuttled.
It was on a discovery channel program a few months back.

HMAS Vampire and Vendetta were the only Aussie destroyers sunk by the Japanese off modern-day Sri Lanka and Timor respectively. Can't remember what the book says!
We did lose a couple of cruisers as well so...
