Product Description:Polar shift: It is the name for a phenomenon that may have occurred many times in the past. At the very least, it disorients birds and animals and damages electrical equipment. At its worst, it causes massive eruptions, earthquakes, and climatic changes. At its very worst, it would mean the obliteration of all living matter, and if that happens-exit Earth.
Sixty years ago, an eccentric Hungarian genius discovered how to artificially trigger such a shift, but then his work was lost, or so it was thought. Now, the charismatic leader of an anti-globalization group plans to use the work to give the world's industrialized nations a small jolt, then reverse the shift back again. The only problem is, it cannot be reversed. Once the shift starts, there is nothing anyone can do about it.
Austin, Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA Special Assignments Team certainly have faced dire situations before, but never have they encountered anything like this. This time . . . even they may be too late.

Again, The Numa File Novels take upfrom where the earlier Dirk Pitt Stories (Since Atlantis Found certainly) leave off. I mean the core product of the good writing. Not the drek that ended with TO. Polar Shift -- The story sounds spectacular. Lost City was one hell of a tale. Like three books before it. The're fresh, different, and in a class all there own. Like Ican Gold and Cyclops stand with good stories and original plots and the edge of your seats turns.
You think I did not like TO. The book was good till the last 70 pages. Off the rails it went into the Hudson.

Just finished Polar Shift. Bought it last weekend. Not bad, but somewhat anticlimactic.
Maybe it's just me. I'm a Clive Cussler fan, not a Paul Kemprecos fan.

I'm half way through it. I like the tow of them together. I do have to say I enjoy a Dirk Pitt adventure alot more but Kurt Austin grows on you.
Cyclops - September 19, 2005 03:31 PM (GMT)
I just bought the book. I can't keep up with the frequency of the releases now that Cussler has 2 co-writers and Kamprecos.

I do have one major complaint about Polar Shift.
I don't know who to blame.
But in the opening scene, the pistol used is spelled Lugar.
Geez, the gun has been around for a hundred years and is one of the most recognizable and unique firearms ever made.
You would think that Kemprecos or the publisher would have had a spell check program that would have told them it's spelled Luger.
Nothing takes me out of a story that a horribly misspelled word, unless it's some bozo screwing a silencer onto a revolver....

Amazingly, the lugar spelling is abundant on a google search ;
google lugar + gun

I finished the book a few days ago and I thought it could have a stronger ending. It was a decent story but not one of the best. It could have used a little more action.

Hi Cussler Fans. This was a very well written book. I enjoyed it. I managed to get this book the day it becamne avail. Cant wait for the latest to become avail. I have now read 27 cussler books Cyclops being the latest and my last non fiction avail to read. gotta live these books. i may start rteading them again. I did find a descrepancy in the Trojan Odyssey., unless my memory has failed me. Loren's father was at the wedding, I thought that Dirk found his body in the B29 from Vixon 03 in the plane. Maybe I should read that again????? But as always Cussler brings it all to a great finish. Have fun all and see you again soon. Dave CarQuestDave@yahoo.com..... here is my list in the order that i read them. shucks no right click. lol I will type them in next time

Your right. Loren's father was found in the lake in Vixen 03. Guess he just couldn't miss a good party.

I have now read 19 of Clive's books. The latest is Polar Shift. I have to say that this is the best and fastest read of all his novels. There are certain reasons why I believe this to be true. My number one complaint in most of his novels is too much use of trite James Bond like lines especially between Kurt and Joe. What made this a better read than usual was the limited use of this medium. Some of it is necessary to the characters Dr. Cusler creates. But in previous novels I was distracted from the story by too much of it. Another reason that I believe this to be a better book than most of the others is the storyline. It has a logical flow. Links which build to obvious conclusions in this novel do not seem contrived. It almost seem as if the story was written to be made into a movie. (And I think it should be.) I read Sahara. I saw the movie. They were both good, but not great. Polar Shift would be an ideal vehicle for a director like Speilberg to produce. The one thing I am missing in some of the more recent NUMA novels is a lack of underwater exploration. Being an avid diver, this is what drew me to Cuslers novels in the first place. So I say to Mr. Cusler - Please continue to write in the vein of Polar Shift but add more diving to your adventures.

I haven't read this one. I've only read two of the co-authored books (Serpent and Blue Gold). Anway, I'm confused- wasn't the danger of a polar shift the theme of Atlantis Found?
tonym5 - December 24, 2005 06:10 AM (GMT)
I enjoyed this book but found it understated. A great concept and well executed but seemed to lack the high energy or drama. And the four members of the Special Assignments Team were terrific as usual. Hopefully Karla Janos will be used on the team in later books. Kurt definitely needs one woman to keep him occupied during the downtime from Adventure. p:

I am finally reading mine, and it is very good. However, the science fiction aspect Clive usually uses is closer to reality than this particular "geologic" polar shift. There is a tie in to current facts with this as there has been before, in that the magnetic poles are in the beginning stages of pole reversal. This one is odd also because the bad guys are partially right and the good guys are partially wrong, in certain aspects, mainly ecological. yike:
