Clive Cussler has been churning out best-selling adventures for decades. But when "Sahara" opens Friday, it will mark a rare film foray for the author.

Cussler has created master explorer Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) and sends him on a treasure hunt into perilous regions in West Africa. He and his partners (Steve Zahn and Penelope Cruz) are searching for a long lost Civil War battleship, which was protecting a hoard of gold coins.

Other key players are William H. Macy, Delroy Lindo and Glynn Turman.

Breck Eisner makes his feature film directing bow.
