Title: Friday

Just curious to know if anyone actually knows anything of this "Superstition" ship, as refered to in the "Friday's" commercial. Supposedly bulit in England and launched with the name "Friday", on a Friday, with a Captain Friday, and so on...
Happy Sailing!

I heard this tale many years go but seem to remember it as not actually being true.

It's common knowlege that sailors are a superstitous bunch--I can't imagine a crew that would want to set sail on such a voyage.

Fridays have always been one of the many sea-going superstions out there.
Some interesting ones can be read about HERE.

In the past, many Christians would never begin any new project or trip on a Friday, fearing they would be doomed from the start.

Sailors were particularly superstitious in this regard, often refusing to ship out on a Friday. According to unverified legend, the British Navy commissioned a ship in the 1800s called H.M.S. Friday, in order to quell the superstition. The navy selected the crew on a Friday, launched the ship on a Friday and even selected a man named James Friday as the ship's captain. Then, one Friday morning, the ship set off on its maiden voyage... and disappeared forever.

As fishermen say, "A Friday's sail, always fail."

Apparently that captain ended up shipwrecked on a Pacific island and found a good friend in "Robinson Crusoe" ... lol

Cheers ;)
