In "Sahara," Matthew McConaughey plays "master explorer" Dirk Pitt, an action hero who might be described as the frat boy's Indiana Jones.
Dirk, who greets every life experience with a dumb, overbleached narcissistic grin, communicates in wisecracks and has that action-hero ability to emerge unscathed from blizzards of automatic weapons fire. The performance is in the worst possible taste at a time when American soldiers are being shot at with real bullets, but I won't belabor the point.
Directed by Breck "son of Michael" Eisner ("Taken") and adapted from a Clive Cussler novel by John C. Richards ("Nurse Betty"), James V. Hart ("Tuck Everlasting") and newcomers Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, "Sahara" is the sort of subpar "Indiana Jones"-like adventure that once went directly to video.
If McConaughey, who was reportedly third choice after Hugh Jackman and Tom Cruise for this role, thinks this is the start of a franchise for him, he has been smoking too much loco weed.
