Title: SAHARA DirkPitt review
DirkPitt - April 7, 2005 08:51 PM (GMT)
My son, Zak and me at the movies. The following review may reveal certain scenes in the movieI went to the see Sahara with no expectations of a movie that resembles the Clive Cussler book. And I'm glad I did. As an action adventure movie, it is fun to watch, exciting in several parts and it definately has the big movie feel about it with some fantastic desert scenes that captures what you'd imagine the Sahara to be like. It has lots of exotic locations and focuses a lot on the local inhabitants with their vivid color and unique customs. If you wern't familiar with the story beforehand, you would be scratching your head in a few parts, one in particular is the plane wreck scene. This scene and associated sub-plot was obviously cut to pieces because of a certain female actor that was totally erased from the movie. The end result of this scene was confusing and I think a major let down for fan's expectations.
McConaughey as Pitt and Zahn as Giordino works surprisingly well. At times you actually see MM as Dirk particularly in the opening Eva/beach/Numa scenes. McConaughey's Texan accent comes on way too strong sometimes but once you get used to it you fall into line with him as Dirk Pitt. Steve Zahn does a fantastic job! He captures Al in a big way. He may not look anything like what you imagined, but this guy is Al. He's funny, witty and he almost steals the show. Cruz also did very well as Eva. She plays a more serious role as the WHO doctor and teams up nicely with Dirk and Al.
I can see why Clive Cussler washed his hands of the movie, the liberations that hollywood took with his book were extreme in many cases. The cannonball/helicopter scene was way over the top as were others that I won't go into right now. Cussler fans will shake their heads if they've read Sahara recently or have good long-term memories.
All in all, a good adventure movie th:

Thanks for the review, Tony. Sounds like a good action movie and l can't wait to see it. Unfortunately l have another week on this @###@**% drilling rig so l'll be the last person in the forum to see it. What is a Texas accent? I don't think I've ever heard one! j:

Rest assured, Steve you won't be the last! Some of the members have to wait until June/ July time for the movie to be released in their Country :(

| you'd think it was McConaughey (as treasure hunter Dirk Pitt) and Steve Zahn (as his sidekick) who hooked up, since they have more chemistry between them than anything McConaughey can cook up with Cruz |

The only word that comes to mind with that review is OUCH!!!

Thanks for the kind thought Kelly, but the way my luck runs orphans in lower Slobbovia will see the movie about the same time l get to view it. As far as the review from Dallas newspaper-he sounds like he has several axes to grind. Some of the most enjoyable movies l've seen were panned by the critics. co:

Well, I also did not go into the theatre with any expectations. I saw a movie I enjoyed that resembled a book I love. MM - great job as Pitt, SZ - thank you for surprising me, great job as Al, despite physical limitations.
I did miss all the parts they left out, but I guess they did the best they could.
I too hope that the good Dr., doesnt' block any other movies. I will look forward to them too.
All in all, a great time
