Tall-masted Spanish navy schooner visits Galveston

GALVESTON -- The four-masted Spanish navy schooner "Juan Sebastian de Elcano" is in Galveston for its first-ever visit to the island city.
Officials say the vessel dropped anchor in the Bolivar Roads waterway Tuesday.
The Spanish Armada uses the tall, 78-year-old, iron-hulled ship as a training vessel for the navy's officers.
The Elcano's four masts support 20 sails, and its crew consists of 257 officers and seamen -- including 47 officer cadets.
Galveston is the first of three U.S. ports the Elcano is scheduled to visit.
The Elcano and the 19th-century Galveston-based tall ship "Elissa" sailed together in the 1986 Tall Ships Parade in New York harbor. That marked the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty.
