Title: 2 RTT references?
CCfansince1976 - April 18, 2005 08:05 PM (GMT)
In the movie, Sahara, did anybody catch the TWO references to RTT, one for the book, presumably, and one for the movie version? (hint - they're pretty close together!)
:)

There was a newspaper clipping on Dirk's office wall about them raising the titanic. Didn't pick up on the other one though.

I caught the newspaper clip too, it also said in the credits: "Titanic picture used with permission of berkley.uk"

Don't leave us hanging, CCfansince1976!! What was the other refrence that we didn't notice??
CCfansince1976 - April 19, 2005 07:41 PM (GMT)
The answers....
The first was correct - the obvious newspaper article shown in the opening credits (referencing the book?).
The second, and more esoteric reference is the picture of Pitt that had a pirate hat and beard drawn over his face (also in the opening credits)
.
Think back to the movie RTT (I know it's hard to do LOL), and the conversations between Gene Seagram, Dana Seagram and Dirk Pitt;
GS (talking to Dana) "Dirk Pitt...sounds like a pirate"
And later when he meets Pitt
DP- "You don't look like a scientist, if I were to guess, I'd take you for a country club tennis pro."
GS- "Well, that makes us even, you don't look like a pirate."
An intentional in-joke perhaps, or more likely just "defacing" the picture that way to show the humor between Dirk and Al, but either way it is a reference.

Good catch CCfansince1976! I liked the drawing over the picture and thought it added to the character development, but I didn't remember that pirate stuff from RTT. th:

I submitted this to IMDB in the "trivia" section, so look out for it!

Interesting find. I noticed the Titanic pic and the drawing on Dirk, but didn't know what to make of that. I figured it was just Al being a goof-off. I wonder how many people sawa the Titanic pic and scratched their heads?

It's kind of funny to realize that the movie actually has more respect for continuity in the Dirk Pitt universe than the novels do. One of the more recent books (I can't remember which) referenced the wreck of the Titanic being in found submerged in "two sections." But, as anyone who's read RTT knows, that's not right... she's raised, intact, and in New York City!

This isn't about Raise the Titanic but it was in the opening credits: The Oiseau Blanc.
"This plane was of French origin and was actually reputed to have been the first plane to make a transatlantic flight just weeks before Charles Lindberg's successful journey. The plane left France and was never seen again, but several people in northern Maine claimed to have heard an airplane above the cloud cover at about the right time. Interestingly, in Clive Cussler's "Sea Hunters II", he describes how he and his real-life NUMA team of volunteers went searching for the Oiseau Blanc in the forests of Maine, but were unable to find it. He suggests that it likely went down in a large bog."

I wondered if anyone else picked up on that.
However, I can't help noting that L'Oiseau Blanc had an in-line engine with a massive two-bladed propellor, while the photo accompanying the "article" shows a radial engine with a three-bladed prop (I guess the movie NUMA didn't recover Nungesser's "White Bird" after all!)
Still, I thought it was a cool, clever little nod to CC on behalf of the filmmakers.

It's said by Delroy Lindo's character Bo Catlett in the 1995 movie Get Shorty.
IMDB has the quote as "You think we watch any of your movies, Harry? I've seen better film on teeth" though. cop: det:
For those that haven't made the connection yet, Delroy Lindo played Carl in Sahara.

I saw the Photo under the headline about NUMA Raising the Titanic, but it looked like a stock photo.
Wouldn't the Titanic raised by NUMA be sans funnels and rigging?
Wouldn't a front-page photo of such a monumental acheivement be in color?
Or am i just too damn picky?

You have to also think about when the Titanic was raised, were papers in colour in the US then?
anaconda44 - May 1, 2005 03:02 PM (GMT)
1988? I think they were. How long has USA Today been around, it's always been in color. :P

Correct on the who and where... :)
IMDB's quote is wrong, however... the same as Steve Zahn's quote from Sahara was wrong... they had "Hi, howya doin?" as the original quote. I submitted the correct quote "Hi, how are ya?" and it was summarily updated.
oswalder - May 1, 2005 09:11 PM (GMT)
I noticed that there were a couple of errors on the IMDB Sahara quote page, including a wrong quote by Al and the right one regarding whether or not they can fix the crashed plane. I wonder if things like that have anything to do with the fact that some of the trailers had different quotes than the movie. For example, in the trailers the guard on the boat says "You are speaking English now" whereas in the movie he said "You are speaking English right now."
