I'm hoping that they'll add some deleted scenes. Maybe then things will be a little clearer for those who thought the plot was a little shaky. I, for one, thought the plot was great, mainly because I read the book. For someone who didn't read the book--I could see where they might see holes. :)

I am one of those who had not read a Clive cussler novel until after I saw Sahara.

I was curious as to what you thought might be seen as plot holes for people like me.

The only thing I recall was when they first came upon the prisoners. It seemed to me that if people spending a short time in Mali could die (the father and son), that those "working" at the plant should also have died. But maybe I missed something. How was this handled in the book? Or was it in the book?

Holes or not, it was a good, fun movie.

That scene was very different in the book. In the book, hundreds of innocent people were working as slaves in the mines of Tebezza.

As for one of the holes I thought someone who hadn't read the book might've seen, was the part in the movie where dirk and al come across the airplane in the desert. In the book, it is perfectly explained in the prologue as to how it got there, but in the movie, it magically appears (not to say I didn't like it.) It may sound like I didn't like the movie, which is untrue. I loved it, and I did not pay any attention to parts that were left out from the book (which probably helped me enjoy the movie more). p:

Thanks for the info.

I can see why they changed that part of the story. Can you imangine how much more costly the movie would have been had they needed to pay, feed and and maybe house hundreds of extras acting as slaves? But I do look forward to reading about it in the book.

The part about the plane did not bother me, although it may have others. It was one of those suspension of disbelief moments. What are the chances they would find an airplane with a tool kit just where they happen to be in the middle of the desert? How it got there didn't matter. I just enjoyed Al's comment to Dirk and the following scene.

I didn't regard Kitty's plane as a hole in the movie as such, for the average movie goer, however to the reader I did.

Allow me to try and explain myself, if I hadn't read the book I would have just assumed a plane had come into trouble in the desert and crashed and thought to myself how convenient. Now since I had read the book I did view it as a hole as I sat their thinking 'where is Kitty?' Make sense?

Giordino13 - June 9, 2005 01:15 PM (GMT)
I completely understand what you're saying. It could be likely that a plane was there without a cause (hey, planes crash sometimes). I think what you (kellym) are saying is that since the book provided an explanation for how it got there, then it would be considered a hole in the movie to not at least hint to where it came from.

But that's enough on that subject

Nooooooooo that is only part of what I am saying.

From a movie goers stand point is was not a hole at all in my opinion :P

Even though I didn't consider it a hole - my wife (who does not read Clive - only fantasy) thought both the plane being there and the fact that the Texas was revealed by throwing a bomb was "too contrived - too convenient" and lazy on the scriptwriters standpoint. So that is a different viewpoint from an outsider.

That it wasnt a hole in your opinion.

Giordino13 - June 9, 2005 11:45 PM (GMT)
Nope, not really for me :) That probably was because I filled it in myself since I read the book.
