A one-of-a-kind, adult summer arts camp in Paradise Valley starts this week, offering a rare opportunity to meet and mingle with such local stars as landscape artist Ed Mell and bestselling author Clive Cussler.

The camp opens Thursday and runs through Sept. 9 at the Hermosa Inn, 5532 N. Palo Cristi Road.

"These are the things in life that are meaningful," said Hermosa Inn owner Fred Unger, who still regrets a missed opportunity to see Elvis Presley one night long ago in Las Vegas.

"Ed Mell is one of the greatest living artists in Arizona."

Campers will enjoy an artist-hosted dinner at Lon's, the resort's award-winning restaurant, a one-night stay for two in a deluxe guestroom, a breakfast buffet, seminar and lunch with the artist for $409. Dinner only is $89 per person.

Thursday's featured artist is famed Western landscape artist Merrill Mahaffey, who will present a class called "The Art of Seeing Beyond."

Others appearing in the camp include artists Anne Coe and Kevin Irvin and culinary expert Carol Steele.

The Hermosa Inn, a boutique hotel, was built in the 1930s by cowboy artist Lon Megargee.

"Since Hermosa Inn was built by an artist, we feel it is the ideal place for hosting such an art happening," said Jennifer Unger, who since 1992 has owned the property with husband and developer Fred.
