Title: Is it just me?

Or does all this recent publicity about the new "romance" on Sahara mean the movie is in trouble? Usually, when an on-set romance is publicized so much, it's because the studio is afraid the movie won't do well and want "buzz" about it. There are a slew of articles about Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz's breakup and her "romance" with Matthew McConaughey.
Just my two cents,
Bob
Here's one:
Cruz cruises with new man

Things have apparently been heating up on the set of Penelope Cruz's new film 'Sahara,' and we're not talking about the temperatures in the Moroccan desert locale.
Shortly after her relationship with Tom Cruise fizzled, Cruz turned to another Hollywood hunk for support. And who's that you may ask? None other than her costar Matthew McConaughey according to IMDB.com.
Sources reported back to Britain's News Of The World telling the tabloid that things are getting serious. One source said, "It's been a long, hot, exciting shoot if you know what I mean. Watching the two of them together, you could almost see the sparks fly."
Guess the Spanish beauty's mission of getting over Cruise has been very possible.

GREAT!! :D Cruz with Matthew! Fantastic.. Glad Tom's out of the picture, he can't keep anybody happy...
Only thing he was ever good at..was the part he played as the Vampire Lestat!

Loren you are so on the mark about Tom Cruise. You know the romance between Cruz and McConaughy will reflect in the movie. That will be fun to watch.

Anybody know what Kidmans first comment was after breaking up with short-Tom?
At least I can now wear high heels again!

I don't remember Sahara as a romance!!!.....

Great. Hope this doesn't turn into another Bennifer. Actually, this could be a Matthifer.....

Now that's a mouthful!
As for the possibility of the studio publicizing the romance so much, it could indeed be a sign they want to focus as much attention on the film as possible. But then again, why wouldn't a studio want attention? Even negative hype is attention, which means more peple will see their film.
And isn't that the point?

Just last week they showed the loving couple holding hands on Entertainment Tonight.

This is most likely P.R. driven.
You know the old saying: "There's no such thing as bad press."
This particular angle (on set romance) puts a bug in the public's ear that maybe the love scenes in the movie are authentic in some way... maybe what we'll see on screen is true love and not just acting!
Yeah. This is typical production leakage.
tonym5 - September 29, 2004 04:55 AM (GMT)
I don't recall any love scene in the book!!!!

What about that scene in the old fort when Pitt takes Rojas to the room where Pitt finds keg of nails to build his and Al's catapult? I take that as a love scene.

I don't think it COULD mean the studio or producers think the film is in trouble for the simple reason that, from what I can tell, the industry has no clue what constitutes a bad movie. Every film that comes out seems like a multi-million dollar game of pin the tail on the donkey. Sometimes they get lucky and actually score, but more often than not, they miss the wall altogether.
It isn't really that hard to tell a good story, especially when adapting source material like a Clive Cussler novel, but somehow they screw it up anyway.
tonym5 - September 29, 2004 07:48 PM (GMT)
You nailed that on the head Nick Kismet. What the audience wants is a story with well defined characters and the fact that a lot of people will settle for minimal acting and lots of action and adventure. :)
