DirkPitt - July 2, 2005 06:18 PM (GMT)
Here's one you don't see for sale very often, a Night Probe ARC (Advance reader's copy) Even some of the world's biggest collections don't have this one.

I'm guessing you've had dealings with this lady(?) before.....
It does make me wonder also how people accquire these hard to get editions. It would make interesting reading to hear from other members, how they "landed a big one"?... hard searching or just dumb luck

I wish I could get my hands on that one!! p:

I'm sorry, but I would never pay 1400 bucks for a book. Even a Clive Cussler one. Is this one as rare as the Iceberg ones?

:) :) :) Oh yes. If I had it I would get it but it's a toss up, pay mortgage, buy a book, pay mortgage, buy a book.

Empress - I concur. That woman is NOT very nice at all and she does always seem to get her grimey little hands on some nice Cussler books - and then tries to stick it to people in selling them. She also has other Cussler books listed on Ebay from time to time and those are ALWAYS listed for 4 to 5 times what they should be! I guess she figures some dumb sap will come along and think they've struck it rich...
I approached her about a book she had listed about a year or so ago (can't remember which one). She had it listed for some ridiculous amount and I offered her about 1/2 of what she had it listed for. She of course refused, even though it was still a quite reasonable offer. I then saw it re-listed about 6 months later for the price I had originally offered her for it. Of course I didn't buy it then and would NEVER by anything from her.
Here is another example of trying to rip off collectors. The Piatkus hardcover of Pacific Vortex, which I've seen sell for anywhere from $100 to $200/250. She had it listed on ABE for $595 and now's she's "dropped" the price to $450.
http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookSearch...924&PID=1188329I'll stop now before I REALLY get started!!!

I know the "buy it now" price is $1400, but as of right now there is 2 days left in the auction and the current bid is only $100. Just wait until the end of the auction and make a bid. Good luck!
Foss Gly - July 5, 2005 05:46 PM (GMT)
The problem with that plan, my good man, is that if the "Buy It Now" price is that high, the reserve is probably just as steep. :(
Giordino13 - July 5, 2005 06:03 PM (GMT)
You're right, John. It's tricky with those reserve prices. Personally, I try to stay away from auctions with reserves; they get too pricey and risky. <_<
oswalder - July 6, 2005 12:51 AM (GMT)
I guess that shows my ignorance with eBay. I didn't even know reserve prices existed. That is too bad.
Empress - July 6, 2005 02:19 AM (GMT)
Any books I ever sell on Ebay I start the price at about half what I paid for it. If I have Cussler books on Ebay it's because I have backups and members already have them. I'm such a strong believer in Karma that I couldn't imagine screwing anybody like that. I'm all for it if the buyers themselves want to bid the price up, I have an Empress of Ireland habit to support!! :)

Couldn't agree more on the price for this ARC.....although a Deep Six ARC went for close to 800 abt a year ago, on Ebay, and she was not the seller. Anyway, I bid on this book and if you check you'll see the bidding ended at $250 or something like that...well short of the BIN price. I believe the reserve was close to the BIN price also. In fairness, I have purchased from her in the past and found her amicable and willing to negotiate. Still I didn't always get the price I was willing to pay and I walked away.
I'd love to have a full collection of Clive's ARCs....passionately....and I've managed to purchase 15 so far...the oldest being a RTT. Thought abt this latest but I wouldn't bid anywhere near $1400.

You know, If I had that kind of money, I probably would get involved in that kind of buying. But thankfully, I don't. Just wonder why there are some crazy people, who just because they have the money waste the time. It gives a bad name for those of us who just want a good read and wonder why big name "celebrities" who write books get such high advances that cost us, the book buying crowd to pay an average of 25$ to 30$ just for a hardback edition or $12 to $25 for the softcover. It's ridiculous!!!
oswalder - July 10, 2005 03:30 AM (GMT)
I think I will stick to the used book stores, garage sales, and the unending generosity of our forum members. Although my brother has gotten me each of the last three new Pitt books when they came out, in hardcover no less. yike:

I asked her that once Julie and she said she has 'contacts.' Of course she wouldn't elaborate on that. I have also had dealings with her. She comes across as very arrogant in her e-mails.
A long while ago (before I had my current Dodd Mead Iceberg) I found an ex-library copy Dodd Mead Iceberg on ebay that got listed late at night for a "buy-it-now" of $500. It wasn't in that great of shape but looked to be worth about what they were asking, maybe a bit less. There was damage on the backside of the DJ and the letters of the front of the DJ were moved all the way left to the beginning of the spine. This was how I recognized it later on in the story...
I held off bidding it to call my husband at work to discuss the price and we decided to get it. I went to bid it the next morning and had just missed it by 5 minutes. Lisa Cohen had won it with the buy it now option. I knew it would show up shortly again on ebay. Sure enough, two weeks later it showed up for about $900+ with a buy-it-now of over a $1,000 (these are estimates on the prices since its been while). I recognized it from the DJ. The next time it showed up she was trying to sell it for over $1,200 with the BIN option. It again didn't sell. It showed up for yet a third time for around $1,400-$1,500 on the BIN option and she added Clive's signature. It again didn't sell. The girl is nuts. I couldn't figure her logic in upping the price each time it didn't sell.
Anyway, I don't care how much I want a book - I will not deal with her at all.
BTW - I ended up being glad I didn't bid that one because a short time later I found a NF copy of the Dodd Mead that was not an ex-library copy. Of course, I paid more for it, but it was worth it and its signed too. :)

Here's another example of Lisa Cohen trying to gouge an unsuspecting collector. This book is worth about $20-$30 max and Clive's sig MAY bump it up to $50 - certainly not the ridiculous amount she's asking for it. UGHHHHH!
She gives booksellers a BAD name!!!!

Here's a rare item to consider...
The condition isn't very good, but it would be a good addition to collection until you could find a better copy, if you can get it cheap enough (in the condition shown, I wouldn't recommend paying over $20):
ebay Night Probe LP

Yep, thats one for the collection. I think almost all those Night Probe LPs went into libraries as did the other rare LP, Pacific Vortex.
US Pacific Vortex LP, UK Pacific Vortex LP (1985), UK Pacific Vortex LP (1997)
Empress - August 13, 2005 01:37 PM (GMT)
I bought the LP Night Probe off of Ebay as a birthday present to myself and only paid $26.00 for it. It was in really good condition I couldn't believe it. I did bid on the PV LP but it went for $200.00 which was way out of my price range for the condition it was in which was pretty bad. I did buy a HB UK copy of Iceberg that I thought was really neat so it should be here soon.
I think you and Dave are right, most of these books seem to go to the Library, which is the only place I've seen a LP Cyclops, and you guys have proven over and over that people don't take care of them. Really sad I think.
If you have too many of the PV Large Prints I'd be more than happy to buy one off your hands :)

I watched that book, that was another one that was way too far out of my price range but I did enjoy seeing the same names pop up on the bid sheet as I have seen on the other rare books.
