Several hours after the memorial Dirk Pitt the third, 12 years of age walks up to his mother, Summer, and asks, "Mama, I know Grandpa Dirk was a hero many times over and saved a lot of people but you have'nt told me much about great-grandpa George or my great-great and great-great-great grandpas. Do you know much about them? And if you do, can you please tell me now? "Well, my sweet son, your great-grandpa George was born in 1900 and lived a full life. He served in both World Wars 1 and 2. He was a Los Angeles cop in the 1920s and 1930s. After World War 2 he went into politics and served as a Lieutenant Governor under Governor Goodwin Knight in the early 1950s. And was elected United States Senator in 1958 and served until 1994. Your great great grandpa Matthew was born in 1840 and rode in an covered wagon from Dayton, Ohio in 1846 across the country to California. At Nine years of age he became rich in the Forty-Niner gold rush as a supplier of goods for the miners. Then he joined the navy when he was 13 years old and sailed with Commander Matthew Perry to Japan in 1853. Your great great grandpa Matthew then served in the Civil War as a Civil war correspondent and after the war became a world traveling journalist reporting on many wars and other topics. He would eventually learn to drive and to fly. He would marry late and had great-grandpa George late in life. Your great great grandpa Matthew disappeared in the Himalayas during World War 2 while on a plane. Your great-great-great Grandpa Daniel Pitt lived from 1763 to 1854. He served in the Revolutionary war. He would be a trailblazer, fur hunter, and surveyor. Your great-great-great-great Grandpa Zeke was born 1720 and lived until 1808. Not much is known about him".

George Pitt sat in the car as a lookout while his partner, Miles Renfro, went to check the payoff between the two individuals in the alley. George knew what would probably happen, Miles would most likely get a cut of the money just to keep the two in check. George felt sick. He knew that most of the force was on the take in some form or another and it proved hard to be on the force knowing this and walking a fine line in trying to be accepted, but be true to himself. It didn't help that his father was in town and knew that George was walking the line between being an honest, good cop and still be accepted by the majority. Matthew Pitt kept pushing his son to find something else to do professionally. Even when he was a lifeguard, George's father treated him like he was a beach bum. Knowing people in all walks of life helped Matthew Pitt keep a finger on the pulse of the city despite his coming and going. The old man would remind George of the 19th century and it's humble ways where one's knowledge of the lay of the land by which we make sense of the world and through which we participate in life's activities.
tonym5 - July 6, 2005 11:34 PM (GMT)
George Pitt would learn that lesson slowly as he got older and found himself a better cop by knowing more than the other person or out-bluffing someone. It would stand him in good stead when he would participate in politics later. Always know everything that's around you and if not act like you do. It would have helped when he first joined the Los Angeles Police Department after the Great War. While in training for the police department he met Louise Sheffield and began courting her. They would marry after he got his first beat in 1919. Louise was a dark haired beauty that would turn men's heads when they were near. They made a good home in the small apartment. It would not be until 1928 when they bought their first house.

Once when his father was in town and staying for dinner at George and Louise's, Matthew got on the subject of his civil war experience and how he, Henry Villard and Whitelaw Reid would battle to be first with a telegraphed story to the newspapers back east. Apparently Henry was furious that Whitelaw Reid got his story off first and fumed that he was always second. Matthew Pitt, enjoying the rivalry between the two never found himself trying to compete against either one. Matthew was confident of his skills. Later it would be the three of them together in the internecine Republican party politics of the 1870s and 1880s despite his travels that would find them competitive and each knowing their respective turfs and butting heads or allying with one or the other. It was a rough and tumble time in the politics of the Republican party with Ohio and New York states dominating the party. Matthew and Whitelaw were from Ohio. Whitelaw being from Greene County and Matthew being from Montgomery County. "It helps to know what you're doing no matter what area it may be, George. Remember that. You know what I found out back then? Even my grandfather, Zeke was political. Though it's hard to believe a groundskeeper for a cemetery could be that way. Hehe".

16 year old Matthew Pitt was awed at all the politicians he was rubbing shoulders with at this convention to nominate a president. He was in Philadelphia at this party convention where there was a lot of confusion as to what the new party was to be named and who would be selected to be the nominee. There were small groups of politicians meeting all around and inside other rooms too. With his wealth he could sponsor or broker a politician if he wanted. Having already met the former Senator of California, Charles Fremont, and some others from other states, Thomas Hart Benton, Senator from Missouri was in the nearest group that he could see. Over on the other side of that group he saw some politicians from Ohio that included Salmon Chase, Ben Wade and others. And over to his right he saw a group from New York that included the two U.S. Senators, Thurlow Weed and William Seward. He saw Charles Fremont heading his way. "Young Matthew! I hope you are enjoying yourself! How I wish your father could be here to see what he helped start back a couple of years ago at Ripon, Wisconsin! Shame he passed away after that great meeting. I see a bright future for this party! Don't you?" "Well, sir, I think it has a great start with all of these men coming together to nominate someone to be president" replies Matthew. The next day everyone is surprised at the great man from California, Charles Fremont, is nominated to be the Republican nominee to be president.

1898. Matthew Pitt is enjoying the trade winds off the Pacific Ocean cooling the island of Oahu as he sits on the beach chatting with Queen Emma, who is talking about the recent abdication of Queen Liliuokalani and the American interests that forced her to leave the throne. "It's a shame, Emma, because if it had been you I know you would not have caved in to the American businesmen as she did". "You are right Matthew, I would not have been swayed by your countrymen" replies Emma. A young woman walks up to the two of them. "Matthew, I would like to introduce you to a friend of mine, Lily Montgomery". Matthew looks up into the most lively eyes he has ever seen and he stands up to shake the hands of an American woman who stands 5'8" with the lithe figure of a young woman in her twenties. She looks at the gray haired man who still has a touch of black wavy hair around the edges and feels in her heart that this is the man she's going to marry.

1900. In a hospital in San Francisco Lily Pitt is sweating and in great pain as she's giving birth to her son. Matthew is sitting by holding Lily's hand. Finally, the baby comes and the baby boy is given to Lily. She looks into the young face of her baby boy. 'He looks much like my father. His name should be George, named after my father. What do you think Matt?". "George Pitt, it shall be then" as the baby is given to him to hold.

The family walks into the office of the motel and register and then head to their room. After settling in, they walk across the road to a diner for a late dinner. At the diner, little Dirk asks what town they were in. "We are in Tucumcari, New Mexico, Dirk" replies George Pitt. "When we get to Dayton, Dirk we will see some relatives of mine. Now, what do you think about the trip on Route 66 so far?". "It's neat, Dad. Lots of scenery and history along the way" replies Dirk.

1999. In bed, George Pitt lay still, remembering his life as he passed what was to be his last hour. He knew Dirk, his son was in the other room, speaking with others. He was proud of his son and the good things he had done for others over the years. Then George remembered his biggest case that he had when he was a cop back in the 1920s. It still irritated him that his father, Matthew got involved. But he was satisfied that he had helped bring the murderer of Bernadette Bauerdorf to justice. The years in the United States Senate where he helped govern his state of California and the nation was a challenge that he rose to with pre-eminence and hard work. A good legacy he felt and combined with his son, Dirk and his own father, grandfather would be looked upon with respect.

Grass Valley, California, January 1861. On a cold blustery day in the High Sierra's Matthew Pitt walks into a saloon and walks up to the long bar and orders a beer. Half watching a poker game at a nearby table, Matthew see's a woman walk onto the stage and announces a musical show being presented by a young girl, named Bernadette Bauerdorf. The young girl comes out and performs a musical that includes costume changes, dancing and singing. This would be the first time that Matthew would see Bernadette perform and would get to see her perform many times for the next 35 years. In all of his travels over the next 35 years he would catch her performance in many venues and many towns across the country.

November 1856. John C. Fremont lost the election to the democratic candidate, James Buchanan. John C. Fremont takes it philosophically. Matthew Pitt is awed by the man's acceptance of the loss. "Well, who knows young Matthew, I may try again. I just have that strong urge to stay active and find other pursuits until another chance comes along. I remember your father Matthew, that he would accept things too and move on. He was a young buckaroo in his heyday as he and many other fur trappers, surveyor and mountain men like Kit Carson, Jim Bridger, Jim Clyman all explored the west. Those were the days. I remember your dad telling me that even your grandfather Zeke heped Jeremiah Dixon and Charles Mason survey the Pennsylvania-Maryland border back in 1764-1766. He also told me a few things about old Zeke and how he was a character".

Matthew gives a fifteen minute speech with a humorous retelling of the many conventions he has attended and the many people he has met in his life. Everyone stands up at the end of his speech and a ringing applause that lasts for over five minutes in his honor. He and Wendell Wilkie shake hands and then he is led off the stage. George Pitt, his son then walks him out to the car where George helps him in and then drives the car to the hotel. "I can only pray that you will be honored like that too, George when it's your time" says Matthew Pitt. "Yes, it is quite a legacy I have to live up to don't I father" replies George.

As George and Chuck conduct their investigation of Bernadette's murder, questioning people who have also been interviewed by Matthew Pitt they are frustrated when some of the people won't cooperate with them after already being interviewed. George confronts his father, "Dad, It is my job to investigate this murder and your interviewing of the same people either before or after is not helping our attempts to build a case. And if you are learning anything it would be a big help to hand over your notes to us. I mean it, whatever you're learning would help us more than it would you". Matthew Pitt hands over nearly all of his notes, leaving out a couple of things he thinks his son has not learned of yet. And it isn't really for an article that he's writing, although he may. Once the murderer has ben brought to justice. One of the notes he has not given to his son, George, is the name of a cop in the LAPD who may be involved. Another note he did not give to George is about a chinese restaurater who is connected to some shady characters in Hollywood.

Matthew, already aware of great corruption in the LAPD had to be careful in his inquiry of the situation and managed to talk to those on the street who knew a lot because of their involvement. And getting into the Chinatown area of L.A. was not easy. Finally he found someone who knew a lot about Chinatown and had connections. Meeting one Angus Manwaring Cory, a restaurant supplier for the Chinatown area, Matthew asked about one Soo Hsi Kyu, who was involved in many illegal operations. At one point in his interview Matthew was inspired to inquire if anyone had invested in Chinatown, Hollywood and other areas. And sure enough, Angus said that the old lady who owns the Braxton Hotel had some extensive investments all over the L.A. area including Chinatown, Hollywood, Real Estate and Construction. Matthew knew he was onto something, though nebulous because of the breadth and scope of the corruption that pervades many aspects of the city's environs. A daunting task indeed. Matthew knew that much of the corruption is not necessarily all connected together, but something has to be out there that he could find.

"Your honor, we were in disarray after lady Bauerdorf passed away and our clerk was not on top of the situation, However, we are claiming the estate as the sole property of the company that Lady Bauerdorf founded". "Mr. Harris, I can see the logic of your reasoning and why it took you this long to learn of the situation, but I am going to deliberate on this with some time to investigate for myself, to ascertain that this holding company has the right to inherit it's main assets. Until then, Mr. Harris, this case is in my hands for now".

December 6, 1924. Judge Willis has called for a hearing on the testated estate of Bernadette Bauerdorf and declares to Mr. Harris, the attorney for the Berndorf Corporation that the Judge himself has decided that he needs more time to make a decision and needs the books of the Berndorf Corporation to help him make a decision. And without considering Lenore Kassel's claim, declares her unqualified because there is no solid evidence despite all the "testaments" she has filed. February 3, 1925. With copies of the financial books and some research at the city offices that the company was started under false pretences to access Bernadette's estate by deceiving her into putting most of the estate into a holding company on a temporary basis, so as to draw interest from it. After a long, hot day of exploring Matthew Pitt swims in the underground river, Xcaret. When he comes out at the opening into the Caribbean he swims to a nearby beach. When he walks upon the shore he is greeted by a kindly American woman and a latin lover type of guy with the woman. The man, Ramon Navarro introduces himself and his woman friend, "Pancho" Barnes. Matthew Pitt introduces himself, "Yes I recognize you Mr. Navarro, from the films that you star in. And Miss Barnes, I have had the pleasure of meeting you before back in 1916 when I came to your father's house back in San Marino, California for business reasons".
