Title: Endings
Description: Best & Worst

What are your favorite & least favorite Dirk endings??

I just finished reading Dragon and I must say...so far...out of the books of Clive's I've read....its the worst ending. Not because nothing was accomplished...it was just like a "BANG!!" end of the book.

Nothing so far in Sahara says anything about the time at the bottom of the sea...about how everyone found out..etc.

Seems like Clive was thinking of killing off Dirk and then just decided that he'd keep him.

Best: Pacific Vortex...just because it left me wanting MORE.

Night Probes good in the way World changing events have been crossed with the sale of Canada etc.. but its convieniently left alone, good story ending ensures more is wanted

Worst ending: Dirk Jr. and Summer Jr. showing up at the end of Valhalla Rising. Absolute CRAP.

Best ending: Vixen 03. The graveyard scene with Patrick Mackenzie Fawkes seems real to me... "Rest well, Captain Fawkes. May you not be judged too harshly."

Best was Vahalla Rising with Dirk and summer Jr. I loved the twist!

No Worst for me

The endings to Valhalla and Trojan were different, Dragon was suspenseful. RT! was pretty good. For worst, the ending to Trojan (on the island) wasn't up to Cussler's usual standards.

JimmyAEMT-I - April 19, 2004 12:07 AM (GMT)
I enjoyed Dragon a lot...I just thought the ending kinda fizzled right out.

Yeah...Dirk comes back on shore at the end...good little line to end it..but nothing else. How did he get out? What was it like? What obsticles did he have to go through. What was everyone's reaction when they found out he was alive...did Loren really believe he never slept w/ anyone else just before he "died"?

Just little things taht make you go "what the?!" when you realize the book is no more

My vote for the best ending goes to Inca Gold Postscript - "the photo".
Sandecker loves to tell the story of “Rio Pitt.”

I can't think of a least favorite ending, but Dragon left me with a fierce craving for crab louis salad! I finally made the salad. But at last, just mention Dragon, and the craving for crab louis salad comes back...

I don't like how the "Shock Wave" ends. For one, I don't like stories where good guys die. I was expecting Dirk and Maeve to have a happy ending. I also don't understand why Boudicca had to be a man. Man or woman, the story will still be the same. But as a whole, the novel is great.

I agree that Trojan's ending was by far the most disappointing. It just seemed to lose steam and be over. I like a more radical finale when Dirk finally meads out the justice on the villan/instigator. I want somebody tossed down an elevator shaft, blown up in the sky, fed their own nuclear waste etc., not just waltzed off to jail as though all they did was get too many parking tickets. When a man of action, a realist like I perceive Dirk to be, catches up to somebody who has tortured people to death, has no perception of human decency, and has attempted to kill him and his people, caused NUMA people to die, I don't want him to let them keep breathing air! Just my opinion.....

"Pitt tightened his grip on the wheel, pressed the accelerator to the floor and watched the tachometer needle as it crept slowly into the red" (Night Probe) I really liked the way that book ends. To me the ending for "Vahalla Rising" was a bit cheesy.

koros - April 26, 2004 08:50 PM (GMT)
like other friends in the forum i finished totally impressed with the end of the valhalla rising. two Pitt's juniors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
INCREDIBLE
is the method to continuous the serie in the future??? jejeje

Best endings: Vixen 03, Inca gold, Treasure, Shock Wave (that one had me crying for weeks  )

Worst endings: Hmmmm..... Maybe the NUMA Files books -- the endings there are all worse than DP. :P

nx2nothing - May 18, 2004 07:54 PM (GMT)
Best still VR.

But now i have a worst ending: Golden Buddha it was too neat and pretty.

Celeste - May 19, 2004 07:37 PM (GMT)
I have to say by far the best ending was for VR. I read that..and was like "what! Kids! omg no way! Dirk has kids!" and I started laughing. My boyfriend thought I was off my rocker but definitely had me on pins n needles waiting for the next book.
As for the worst ending..mmm that's a toughie..I like all Cussler books.

householdrob - June 6, 2004 08:12 PM (GMT)
Best would have to be Inca Gold and the Rio Pitt, but for sheer bravado it would have to be the Wave in Cyclops with the children all around Pitt and the discovery of the La Dorada...CLASSIC Cussler. Also Pitt handled himself juat as I would have expected in front of congress at the end of TO. Maybe not worst but definitely the strangest ending would have to be Iceberg, what with the pirates of the carribbean and the sexual origins of you-know-who. (dont want to spoil it for those of you who haven't read it).

golferreino2002 - June 7, 2004 03:50 AM (GMT)
My favorite ending was dragon. You don't need to know what he went through you just needt o know that nothing can defeat Dirk Pitt. It may drive him down but he will always rise up. My least favorite ending had to be Shockwave because you just see Pitt so down and lonely. It had me feeling sorry for the guy. Clive is such a good author, he always gets people so involved in the books no one else can do that for me. Except for Dr. Suess  That's just because i'm a weirdo though!

Archer - September 25, 2004 04:28 PM (GMT)
i loved the rio pitt after Inca Gold but i don't have a bad ending thou w: co: b:

j2pphillips - September 25, 2004 10:10 PM (GMT)
My best ending was Deep Six, Madame Bouginville beeing pushed down the elevator shaft by Dirk ( couldn't happen to a better person ) th:

Close Behind is Sahara - Masserede being stripped naked and tied to the stakes under the burning sun then having to drink his own contamination beer:

Far as worst ending, really none come to mind, I will disagree with the comments that VR was the worst ending - I think introducing the kids was a good idea and reading TO its working.

Kellym - October 1, 2004 02:55 AM (GMT)
I've been giving this some thought and if I HAD to choose then

Best Sahara and Inca Gold, then VR had a good ending and Dirk infront of Congress was good in TO and.......hmmm well you get the picture

Worst Dragon I guess.

*Although what is the deal in these books with women actually being men?*

Absolutely, Dragon gets my vote for worst ending, but for slightly different reasons.

Mostly, because it comes at the end of my least favorite Cussler novel. But I would take issue with the "BANG." In fact, I felt like the "Dirk is dead"/late to his own funeral thing was tedious and had no real impact.
Ending a story well is very important because it can either leave you wanting more, or promising never to give the author another cent of your money. I think that sometimes CC (and others) try to wrap everything up in a neat little bow, but sometimes that's the wrong thing to do. It kind of feels like the end of Star Wars (actually almost all of the Star Wars movies except EMPIRE) where everyone gets a medal at the end. Whoop-de-doo! It's an anticlimax.

Nick Kismet - October 4, 2004 08:45 PM (GMT)
hmmm....on further review, perhaps Valhalla should take the honor (?) of worst. Not just for the big revelation (the kids) but because it really did end with a whimper, while at the same time trying too hard to bring to a close plot elements that were never that important to the story to begin with (e.g. Captain Nemo.)

RudiGunn - October 4, 2004 11:48 PM (GMT)
i enjoyed the ending of Shock wave even though it was very somber, But my favorites were Inca Gold and, this may surprise you but Lost City, the new Kurt Austin book. The three separate funerals of Captain Levant, MacLean, and Jules Fauchard and the latin saying at each of their departings. It really got to me. I know the NUMA files don't get too good of a review, but I really enjoyed it.

Shock Wave- absolutely brilliant

I'm kinda surprised no one has mentioned the end to Atlantis Found when the helicopter flies over the two frozen bad guys. I've been pretty cold before and it wasn't fun, I can't imagine freezing to death would be a good way to go.

Also, while I didn't like the funeral thing, I did enjoy Pitt rolling up on the beach at the end of Dragon.

Sahara and Inca Gold were good, I don't remember too many of the others.

As for worst I would have to say the end of VR, not because of the kids (which I did think was pretty weird) but because of the origins of the oil.

The ending of RTT was ok, but I thought it wrapped up a little too neatly. Plus, I think we should have heard more about the missle defense system in later books.

I guess I didn't really like the end of Pacific Vortex either because I didn't understand why Summer dove back down, which then lead to moody and somber Dirk in later novels.

The absolute worst ending has got to be Iceberg. I shudder to recall it. The best ones have to be Inca Gold and Atlantis Found.

Empress - February 1, 2005 08:34 PM (GMT)
I would have to agree with Dragon!! The start of it gave me goosebumps, the ending made me start reading Sahara IMMEDIATELY, so I could get the goosebumps back, and it worked!

tonym5 - February 8, 2005 05:30 AM (GMT)
TO was disappointing in it's ending with Epona going to jail after all those she had killed. It was appropriate that Dirk was down after losing Maeve, it showed him as human at the end of Shock Wave. Best Ending was Deep Six :P

FAVORITE---ATLANTIS FOUND AND DRAGON...dragon was the first cussler book i read and was what got me hooked.....also no one has mentioned RAISE THE TITANIC....although abit cheeze it was cool...

WORST----ICEBERG was my least favorite of all the books anyway

HEY KELLYM i would have figured your fave would have been RAISE THE TITANIC t: ....hehehe

;) I'd have to say the best was Sahara with Massarade stark raving mad and trying to eat his doctor. Second would have to be Deep Six with the Madam going elevator diving.

Worst would be Dragon. Alittle hard to believe Pitt spending weeks with nothing to eat but moldy bologna sandwichs. Good story but the ending is to farfetched I think. But, still alot better than I can write. :P
