Description: Any News???
Dear_Heart05 - October 25, 2005 05:11 AM (GMT)
Does anyone have any info regarding the new Dirk Pitt book? I know Black Wind came out not too long ago, but has Clive or Dirk even mentioned anything about its progress???

I hadn't heard there was definitely one being written. I surely hope there is, but don't know anything about it.

I wish that Dr. C hadn't made his books with real time. I mean, Dirk is getting old!!! (Sorry, I haven't read the series all the way through yet. I just completed Atlantis Found) I wish he had never used actual years!!! ;) But I hope he continues writing about our favorite heroes!!!

It was unsettling when Dr. C started using actual years in his books but I like to think he had a reason for doing that. det:

I'm sure he did. And it's fun to put yourself into the series. I mean when Dirk and Al were in the Sahara Desert, I was only in second grade (1992)!!! It's funny reading these books now that I am older and thinking about where I was at the time....

People make fun of the Simpsons because the show has been on for 17 years now and the characters haven't aged. While aging a character allows for new and different kinds of character and story development, it also prevents the author/writers from sticking with what works and creating a timeless product.
There are arguments for both sides, though, and I think of it like this: The show Friends aired for many seasons on NBC, but had to end even while it was still popular because of the fact that the actors were in their upper 30s or 40 and thus the very premise of the show (6 friends who can't handle situations in a normal and mature manner) was becoming unbelievable. It was time for them to grow up, and so the show ended. Had they been able to remain in their late 20s and early 30s forever, the show could have kept on going.
The same could be true for Dirk Pitt books. How many new and crazy adventures could Dirk and Al have had if they were always in their prime? Sure we'd have to suspend belief and possibly treat each book as a separate story rather than each one building on the last (and I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing), but at least we'd have the Dirk that we've come to know and love rather than a dirk jr who is trying to be that same one and perhaps it isn't working so well.
Like I said, though, arguments can be made in favor of both sides so I don't think we'll be able to come to an agreeable conclusion. Some will like it the way it was, some might have preferred it a different way. The only thing we know for sure is that Clive Cussler is one of the best authors of all time and that he has a truly passionate (and opinionated) fanbase.

I would like to see Clive or Dirk give us some stories of when Dirk and Al were perhaps teenagers or in the Air Force or some of the years between books.

It would be interesting to hear these stories. Maybe he could have them looking back over their years of adventures to put a book together like that. th: w:

That would be fun, Rob! You just know those two got into some shennanigans when they were in highschool/college/airforce.

And a way of breathing some new life into the series
loren1 - October 28, 2005 12:11 PM (GMT)
It's hard to breath new life into the series when Dirk and Al have been aged to retirement. Since Dirk and Loren were married we haven't seen much of Loren. We saw more of her before they were married. The honeymoon must be over and new adventures are waiting to happen. (maybe  )

I, too, am patiently awaiting the next Dirk Pitt adventure. But a retrospective is an awesome idea!

Clive seriously needs to look at some of the idea's floating around this forum...GOOD STUFF! :)

If all the books were made into movies then Dirk could stay young by changing the actor when he got past it, rather like 007. But as he is aging in the stories I wonder how long CC can keep writing about Dirk Pitt as a swash buckling hero. and what happens after that... I haven't yet read any numa books and only hope it's not all coming to a grinding halt anytime soon.
