For a start, I've never been a Oregon Files fan. Didn't like the writing style and didn't get into the characters.

One other thing, I've never read a Jack DuBrul book before either.

Dark Watch started off really well. I instantly immersed myself in Jack's storyline and writing style and didn't put the book down for quite a few chapters. The pace was fast and it brimmed with originality. The North Korean harbor infiltration was quickly followed up by the pirate boarding battle and the submerged ship rescue. All very exciting scenes and I got to know the characters really well. From there the book seemed to drag on through the mid-section until the battle in Indonesian ship-breaking yard and the final battle in the Russian gold mine.

One thing that really amazed me was the fact that none of the good guys wern't seriously injured or killed in the numerous and very intense fire fights that took place throughout the book. There also seemed to be too much emphasis on Cabrillo's prosthetic leg and it was that same leg that copped all the "injury".

One other unbelievable part worth mentioning was where Cabrillo was looking for engine numbers in the ship and it just so happened that Tory was in the same room at the same time. <_<

I'd say its the best "Cussler" book for quite some time and I'm looking forward to Jack's next installment.

Am I an Oregon Files fan now? ... :)

Thanks for the review. I haven't read it yet , but can't wait to now.I'm glad you are now a fan Of the series. I likes them from the first, and each book is better. Are we happy that your happy? :P

After finishing it about 30s ago I can say similar things, I don't look too much into the implausiblilites as I'm out to enjoy myself rather than pull the book to pieces with analysis.

The plot raced ahead and I couldn't put the book down, it's probably the first Cussler book I have ever read where I wasn't even bored for a second.

This addition to the oregon files is welcomed as it allowed me to finally get some insight to the characters and start to feel there personalities.

I was never a real fan of the Kurt Austin / Joe Zavala series nor the oregon series but i'm a little frightened to say that after dark watch i think the oregon files are now my favourite........

Just got it the other night and it's so far so good.I haven't been a huge fan of the Oregon series(unlike Kelly  ) but it's better than GB by a long shot

So Tony are you going to read a DuBrul now?

gamaytrout103 - November 5, 2005 06:13 AM (GMT)
Wow! I just finished it. I was never a fan of the Oregon Files and if Jack du Brul hadn't co-authored this book I wouldn't have read it, but I'm glad I picked it up. The plot was fast paced, well-organized, and easy to follow (something that was not true of the previous Oregon Files books, at least in my opinion). To be honest, I couldn't even make it through the first two Oregon Files, and I normally always finish books, even if I'm not really enjoying them. So the fact that I couldn't make even make it through the other books says something about those books. I have to say du Brul did a great job breathing life back into this series. :P

Finished it last night and all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!! as well. This was a very tightly written book unlike the other two.Very easy to follow again unlike the other two.I agree with Tony about the prosthetic leg but if your going to use it then it might as well be to get you out of trouble. The fact that nobody got seriously injured is a trait through all three books and not just this one.
There were a couple of slipups but nothing that stopped me from enjoying this book immensley.I've been a fan of Jack's books since his second Charon's Landing and I must say that Clive knew what he was doing. The Oregon series is in fine hands and my only hope is that neither Jack's nor this series suffer.

One funny thing I did notice is when they were in the Zodiac and the engine received a bullet(s) and died they broke out the paddles!!!!!! It's the same Zodiac that has an electric trolling motor and they were only 100 yards from the Oregon and in the middle of a firefight yet they resorted to paddling instead...left me shaking my head a bit.

All in all a fine effort.

9/10...way better than GB and SS and way way better than TO or BW

As soon as I heard that Dark Watch was coming out months back, I picked up Jack DuBrul's Medusa Stone and within two weeks I think I read the rest of DuBrul's Philip Mercer series. I can honestly say that If Cussler is my fave auther, then DuBrul is definitely a solid #2. I bet you go check out some of his books now and enjoy them as much as me Dirk.

Anyway to get back on topic the book is a blend of my two favorite authors, to say I was pleased with it would be an understatement.

On a side note did anyone else notice on the inside of the back cover it tells you to check out http://www.jackdubrul.com . However that site is just a dummy site and actually has nothing to do with DuBrul. Odd.

Our good friend Papa Jim talked with Jack yesterday and he said the powers that be (Putnum) are still hard at work on his new website. Now, this wasn't said but I imagine Jack is just as frustrated as we are and eager to see it up and runnig!

PJ will check back with him again next week. I will share with everyone from an email I got from Jack that he is pleased with the kind comments from everyone so far - so keep spreading the word and hopefully we can watch sales climb from great word of mouth!!

Strange, but I guess we all have differing opinions. I read it last night but wasn't all that impressed. On one hand I was glad it was a diversion from that sci-fi type storyline so present in Lost City and Polar Shift but, conversely, I was a bit dissapointed with the book as a whole.

Perhaps I am a bit biased but I have grown to like Cabrillo and company (or corporation!) almost as much as Pitt and Giordino. Sacred Stone was one of my favorite Cussler books so I guess it was natural this one wouldn't thrill me as much. Maybe I expected too much.

I tought the begining was great, up until the attack on the pirate ship. After that it seemed to loose momentum and become somewhat predictable. I liked the new characters quite a bit and thought the lawyer kidnapping scene was great but other than those parts I didn't think it was one of Cussler's best efforts. The human hordes coming out of China reminded me a bit of Floodtide also.

The last two books have had me wondering exactly how much of an influence the 'new' coauthors have had on Clive. In his earlier books he rarely dwelled much on the cities and places of Eurpoe and Asia. However, the latest books have read almost like a Ludlum novel where you're immersed in the story but overwhelmed with the descriptions of the places, cultures, and mindsets of the 'natives.' Not that it's a bad thing but it doesn't seem like the Cussler I grew up reading, strange and I can't really articulate it all that well. Throughout Polar Shift and the begining of this one I was thinking about this change in style, comparing it with Ludlum in my head. Then they were talking about Ramboillet outside of Paris, Jason Bourne meeting with Conklin in the cemetary popped into my head. That kind of cemented the analogy for me, all I could think was.. 'damn, of all the cities in France?' Same deal with the banks in Switzerland as well, not really Cussler's style as I would describe it. He never used to get to wrapped up with this type of detail about the surrounding of the main characters.

Like I said, I have grown quite fond of Cabrillo's crew and was eagerly anticipating reading this one. I finished it in one sitting but wasn't overly impressed. Coming off how much I enjoyed Sacred Stone I guess a bit of a letdown was inevitable but I found this to be by far the weakest of the Oregon Files. I did enjoy it because of the characters but I thought the story was somewhat lacking. I'm sure it was better than most of the novels flanking it at Costco but wasn't one of my favorite Cussler's by any stretch.

Similar impression - A lot better than the first two Oregan files. Huge improvement.

Reminded me of why I started reading CC books couldn't put them down.

But got to Hate the giveaway plots at the end of the chapters as to whats to come, just don't like that. Like CH-3 last four line - THERE IS NO NEED , let us be suprised and find out.

Almost a Oregan Files fan..

While I agree that Dark Watch is the best book so far in the Oregon series, I also found myself wishing the book would just end in several places. I will continue to read new books in the series as published, but the master Clive Cussler has spoiled me. Perhaps Dirk Pitt will finally make appearance in the series. ;) Guess I am just A DIE HARD DIRK PITT FAN.

St. Julien Perlmutter - May 2, 2006 04:25 AM (GMT)
Here is something that bothered me in the book - Basic mistake that I did not expect from a Clive Cussler book - in the world of google it is easy to search and get the facts straight.

The charater Shere Singh (sikh) was from Pakistan - yet 90% of Sikhs are from Indian Punjab. India being Pakistans Neighbour - which is okay there are few Sikhs in Pakistan.

But Sikh is a religion which is Totally different from Islam (Muslims) - Yet (here is the big mistake..)
When Singh is dying he says "Praise to Allah" ------- come on he is not a Muslim he is a Sikh he would have praised his GURU not ALLAH - Is he a SIKH or MUSLIM make up your mind or the point is to just create this typical image of a bad guy..

Any way last week Simthsonian had a special exibition on Sikhs very interesting but then again I knew enough about them already :)

still disappointed..

Before anyone goes on to say who cares - we should all care we are diehard fans and we like things to be top notch and that includes such things in the book.

I am DIE HARD DIRK PITT FAN.. I hate being disappointed by CCs books

bought Dark Watch today, and from reading here it looks like it might be a good book. I haven't read the 2 earlier oregon files books. I started one a while ago, but didn't finish it, can't remember if it was GB or SS.

Loved it. I was already a fan of the Oregon Files books, and had gotten used to Craig Dirgo's different style. It was ok to have a different style, because the characters and plots were different from the Dirk Pitt books. Therefore, I was leary that a new author would change the style and thus change how I related to the characters. However... WOW. Jack Debrul has definitely got some talent. This was definitely the best of the three (haven't read Skeleton Coast) and was jam packed with goodness. One of the best (new) books I've read with Cussler's name on it in at least 5 years (I've only read up through Fire Ice in the Numa files).
