Title: How to Clean Dust Jacket?
armorine - April 12, 2004 10:48 PM (GMT)
I was curious if someone might be able to tell me a good way to remove old glue residue from a bookstore's sticker pricetag? I picked up a 1st/1st edition of Sahara and the back side of the dust jacket cover had a bookstore sticker on it; the sticker came off easily without any damage to the dustjacket, but the 12-year old glue residue remains. Any ideas how to safely remove it? Mineral spirits? Thanks everyone.
Sincerely,

I picked up some adhesive remover from my local computer supply store, and it works great.
If you don't have access to that, lighter fluid on a clean cloth also works wonders, because it won't damage the jacket at all.
Cheers,
Dave

armorine,
Mineral turpentine works fine on those glossy dust jackets. If I come across residue of any kind, I start with warm water first on a soft cloth and rub gently. If that doesn't move it, I try turps on on the same damp cloth and carefully rub it then check and so on till its removed.

I use Goo Gone (citric based) or lighter fluid on my books. You've got to be careful not to rub too hard though. You've also got to avoid saturating the paper with either fluid as that can cause discoloration.

Thanks for the info everyone. Tried the lighter fluid trick as I had it on-hand, and it worked wonders. Thanks again.
