Just a heads up, that tonight (Nov. 20th) NBC is aitring a remake to the 1972 Oscar winning film The Poseidon Adventure. I assume several of the folks around here would enjoy watching this new version of the classic disaster flick. Check it out.

Sounds fun. I haven't even seen the original. In fact I haven't sen the remake either...maybe when it comes out on dvd?

oswalder - November 21, 2005 03:45 AM (GMT)
It turned out pretty well, I think. Most of the scenes seemed to be true to the original, not changed around like some remakes can be (cough, cough, dukes of hazzard, cough).

It just wasn't the same without Ernest Borgnine, though. cop: :P

I just watched the scene where it rolled over and couldn't stop laughing at the stupity of it.We're supposed to believe that a huge ship like that can roll over with such a tiny hole blown in the stern. At least the original was plausible with a huge freak wave causing the rollover. This was one small bomb in a beer keg!!!!!!!!
This was on a perfectly calm sea and a tiny fraction of water entering the stern. It should have sunk stern first if at all.Where were the watertight doors?

At least they got the poor bugger falling through the stained glass roof

Thanks to the wonder of satellite TV, I'm catching the west coast feed, too, Rob, and thought much the same thing.
First, in the small amount of time from the explosion, there was in no way enough water let into the hull to have it capsize. Plus, with a ship like that, would a capsize be even possible?

Nonetheless, I'm enjoying some of the bad acting. The guy with "Homeland Security" (or whatever) is pretty bad, simply saying all his lines though gritted teeth.
We'll see what the next two hours bring.

edit: oh, they're trying to...ahem...scientifically explain it now...ahahaha X-Mas tree of DOOM!

oswalder - November 21, 2005 05:52 AM (GMT)
It seemed like the producers spent so much time (nearly a third of the movie) just setting up who the guys were that set the bombs and how the bombs were going to go off, that they didn't have enough time left for the important stuff like the actual ship rolling over. They did a pretty good job with the second two-thirds of the movie, though (from what I saw flipping back and forth during commercials of other shows).

Fortunatly for me the Simpson's were on at the same time so there WAS something good to watch. And the Chiefs/Texans game.
Was it a 2 or 3 hour movie? I agree with Erik they spent waaaayy too much time setting things up.When it rolls over an HOUR into it it doesn't leave much time for a rescue
And anything with Steve Guttenburg should be avoided like the plague ;)

tonym5 - November 21, 2005 06:31 AM (GMT)
Having seen the original over two dozen times I was tempted to watch this TV adaptation and from what I have read here I am glad I did not watch it!!!! The movie version next year might be worth checking out, though. But there is nothing better than the original that's for sure!!!! t: p:

It was on from 8pm-11pm, so it would have been a 2 hour movie in the theaters without commercials.

Extra points if anyone can tell me the answer to this riddle (I will accept two different answers):

"Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Guttenburg a star?"

That's easy! The Stonecutters!! There's a second answer?
D'oh!

Yeah, for a 3-hr movie there were a ton of commercials. I kept wondering what kind of death toll there was and near the end they mentioned it was over 5 thousand. Convienent that Guttenburg's character survived so far away from his family and no one else did...
The special effects actually got worse as the movie went on, by the end they were just bad. The "lake of fire" they had to cross to get out, and the second "beer-keg explosion" were both really badly done in CGI.

And I like how they twice tried to explain away the ship being able to capsize. It's like they were trying to reassure the audience that "Yes, folks, this can really happen." No, it can't. Your audience isn't that stupid.

Well simply finishing the verse would have counted for half a point: "We do. We do." We, of course, referring to the Stonecutters. A great episode of The Simpsons.

Maybe it's time to read the book again... ;)

Who controls the British Crown? Who keeps the metric system down?

Foss Gly - November 22, 2005 06:22 PM (GMT)
Who leaves Atlantis off the maps?
Who keps the Martians under wraps?

oswalder - November 22, 2005 09:39 PM (GMT)
Who robs cave fish of their sight? Who rigs every Oscar night?

Anyone know of a great Simpsons forum like this? I need an outlet for my Simpsons energies. www.snpp.com is a great site for trivia etc, but no forum community there that I know of.

Mostly Heep - November 22, 2005 10:54 PM (GMT)
Why don't you make your own Erik.

Just Google free forums and pick the best one. That's what I did when I set up my Heep forum. It's fun being your own boss(ask Tony  )

oswalder - November 22, 2005 11:16 PM (GMT)
Thanks, Rob, I might do that (in the hours of spare time I have! )

Foss Gly - November 23, 2005 12:48 AM (GMT)
If you do, let us know, Erik.

Glad I missed this remake. The first one was a good movie. I reaaly hate remakes. The never measure up th the origanil.

harrisonts - November 25, 2005 02:48 AM (GMT)
I read some where that the TV movie was not supposed to be a remake of the original movie, but of the book. when i watch a movie, esp a movie based on a book or another movie (read Saraha or Poseidon Adventure) i try not to compare it to the original. sometimes it is dificult, but i tend to enjoy the movies better.

that aside, Posiedon Adventure was an ok movie. parts of it were down right cheese, esp trying to explain why the ship would turn turtle. anyone know when the movie was filmed?? since the movie took place in the indian ocean, the tsunami last winter may explain why the rogue wave was not used. just a thought.

well it wasn't like the book and it wasn't like the movie they changed up alot of things that it was almost a totally differant movie except for a ship that capsized and thats the only similarity.

oswalder - December 2, 2005 04:36 PM (GMT)
I thought there were more similarities than that. They climbed the big christmas tree to get out of the ballroom. They had a long swim through the ship that ended up killing that one woman. Maybe I only caught the few similarities that existed because I was flipping to it during the commercials of something else.

Just so you guys know, there is another remake of The Poseidoin Adventure in the works. It is simply called Poseidoin and it is the big budget Hollywood remake. Normally, I would agree that remakes tend to be worse than the original, but I'm holding out hope for this one. It will star Kurt Russell, and he's the freakin' man! I'm unclear as to why NBC made their own version which will more than likely pale in comparison. I didn't watch it, but the commercials alone made me feel that I had lost valuable moments in my life. ;)
