Title: Clive Cussler loves to use codes.
Description: A look a the codes in the adventures.
Helene Noelle - January 14, 2006 08:14 PM (GMT)
Clive Cussler have fun with codes in the adventures. My favorite is the Pizza Delivery code.
"Is anyone home?" came Pitt's familiar voice.
"Yes," Sandecker answered tersely.
"This is the Leaning Pizza Tower. You called in an order?"
"I did."
"Did you want salami or ham on your pizza?"
"We would prefer salami."
"It's going in the oven. We will call when our delivery boy is on his way. Thank you for calling the Leaning Pizza Tower."
Then the line was cut off and a dial tone came through the speaker. Sandecker passed a hand across his face. When he looked up, his eyes were strained and grim. "They're inside the shipyard."

Sandecker pounded the speaker button halfway through the first ring. "Yes?"
"This is the Leaning Pizza Tower calling. Your order is on its way."
"Do you think you can find the house all right?"
"The issue is in doubt whether we can arrive before the pizza gets cold."
"I hope you hurry," said Sandecker, suppressing and urgent tone in his voice. "There are hungry people here."
"Traffic is heavy. Will do my best."
"I'll leave a light on." Sandecker set down the phone and stared at Admiral Hozafel with a heavy face. "Forgive the rather silly talk, Admiral."
"I understand perfectly," said the courtly old German.
"What's their situation?" asked Little.
"Not good," replied Sandecker. "They have Dr. O'Connell and her daughter, but must be facing enormous odds in escaping the shipyard. 'Traffic is heavy' meant they were under pursuit by Wolf security forces."
Atlantis Found (30)
Sandecker was about to speak when the phone rang again. He engaged the speaker, almost afraid of what he might hear. "Yes?"
"Just to confirm," came Pitt's voice. "The pizza is on your doorstep and the delivery boy is on his way back to the store through heavy rush-hour traffic."
"Thank you for calling," said Sandecker. There was no sense of relief in his voice.
"I hope you call again when you get the urge for pizza."
"I prefer calzone." Sandecker closed the connection.
"Well," he said wearily, "they reached the aircraft and are in the air."
"Then they're home free," said Little, suddenly buoyant.
Sandecker shook his head dejectedly. "When Dirk mentioned rush-hour traffic, he meant they were under attack by security force aircraft. I fear they have escaped the sharks only to encounter the barracuda."

Rock 'n Roll radio station disc jockey Aloha Willie/Our Gang (Crowhaven) and Big Daddy (Hunter):
"Telephone Admiral."
"Who is it?"
"It's Aloha Willie, the late night disc jockey on radio station POPO."
"What is this mister? I don't want to talk to any damned disc jockey. How did he get on our private lines anyway?"
"He said it was urgent, sir. His contest riddle is: the blackbird has come home to nest. He said you'd win a prize if you knew the answer."
Radio Broadcast:
"Hi-ho there, you early morning birdwatchers. This is Aloha Willie with the top forty tunes rockin' your way across the tropical airwaves with some really great sounds for you disc hounds. Time now, three-fifty. Okay, are you ready group? Glue your ears to the transistors and listen now as we play the flip side of the latest comedy record by Big Daddy and His gang. Take it away, Big Daddy."
"Big Daddy calling Our Gang. Come in please. Over."
"This is Our Gang, Big Daddy. Do you read? Over."
"We read you, Our gang. Over."
"Here is the final score. Visitiors: one run, one hit, three errors. Home Team: no runs, three hits, four errors."
"We acknowledge the score, Our Gang," droned the radio man. "Our congratulations to the visiting team for their win. When can they leave the ballpark?"
"The showers are steaming and the locker room should be emptied in another hour. Will load bus and leave stadium by 0400."
"Our Gang, this is Big Daddy. Where is the Kid?"
"The Kid, and his sidekick went over the hill in search of a lost gold mine. No word since then. Assume they became lost in the desert and ran out of water."
"We'll bring you up-to-date on the sports at 0500," Crowhaven's voice continued. "Our Gang, out."

Here's a code from Deep Six. Starting on pg.117
"Greetings," said the familiar voice of Oscar Lucas. "Sorry to wake you, but I knew you were anxious to hear the score of the soccer game."
Greenwald tensed. Any Secret Service communication opening with the word "greetings" meant the beginning of an urgent, top-secret report on a critical or grave situation. The sentence that followed was meaningless; a caution in case the telephone line might nott be secure- a real possiblity, since the Kissinger State Department had allowed the Russians to build their new embassy on a rise overlooking the city, vastly increasing their telephone eavesdropping capacity.
"Okay, Greenwald said, trying to sound conversational. "Who won?"
"You lost your bet."
"Bet" was another key word indicating that the next statement was coming in coded double-talk.
"Jasper College, one," Lucas continued, "Drinkwater Tech, nothing. Three of the Jasper players were sidelined for injuries."
The dire news exploded in Greenwald's ears. Jasper College was the code for a presidential abduction. The reference to the sidelined players meant the next three men in succesion were taken too. It was a code that in Greenwald's wildest dreams her never thought he would here.
"There's no mistake?" he asked, dreading the answer.
"None," replied Lucas, his tone like the thin edge of broken glass.
"Who else in the office pool knows the score?"
"Only Blackowl, McGrath, and myself."
"Keep it that way."
"To be on the safe side, "I initiated an immediate assessment of the second-string players and future rookies."

"Steak and scrambled eggs, that's my favorite."
Schiller caught Nicholas's drift on eggs and switched his phone onto a secure line that entered a computerized scramble mode.

"Black Horse, this is Red Horse," he said in a tired voice.
"Go ahead, Red Horse," answered the Director of the FBI's field operations.
"We've struck out. The rustlers got here first."
"Join the club, Red Horse. Most of the herd has come up dry too. Only Blue Horse in New Jersey and Gray Horse in Minnesota found steers in the coral."

Coded signal:
Mapes slowed his Rolls-Royce convertible and lifted both hands from the steering wheel in an apparent greeting. The guard nodded and waved to his partner, who pushed open the gate from the inside.
"I assume that was a signal of some kind," said Pitt.
"Pardon?"
"The hands-in-the-air-routine."
"Ah, yes," Mapes said. "If you had been holding a concealed gun on me, my hands would have remained on the wheel. A normal gesture. Then, as we were waived through and your attention was lulled by the guard's opening the gate, his teammate would have discreetly stepped behind the car and blown your head off."
"I'm glad you remembered to raise your hands."
"You're most observant, Mr. Pitt," said Mapes. "However, you force me to issue a new signal to the gate guards."
"I'm crushed you don't trust me to keep your secret."

The gate at the Egan farm:
"Always good to see you, Miss Egan."
"Hello, Gus. How's the baby girl?"
"We threw her out with the bathwater."
Pitt looked at her questioningly. "What was all that about throwing the baby out with the bathwater?"
"A code," Kelly explained with a smile. "Had I asked about his baby boy instead of girl, he'd have known I was being held hostage and shot you dead before alerting the other three guards."

Coded message for Sandecker:
"What is the message?"
"It reads, 'Tell the Admiral that when I return to Washington, I'll take him to see Harvey's girlfriend Judy sing at the AT&S saloon.'....
"Judy the singer is Judy Garland and Harvey represents a movie she starred in called The Harvey Girls."
"How does the AT&S saloon fit in?"
"Not a saloon, but a song. The hit song Judy Garland sang in the movie. It was called The Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe. The name of a railroad."
"The next part reads, 'Also inform the Admiral that Gary, Ray and Bob are going to Brian's house for fun and games.' Can you interpret this?"
Sandecker thought a moment. "If Pitt is still coding in movies then Gary must be Gary Cooper. And I'll guess that he means Ray Milland."
"Do you recall a picture they starred in together?"
"I do indeed," Sandecker fairly beamed over the telephone. "Dirk might have just as well hung out a neon sign. They starred with Robert Preston and Brian Donlevy in a 1939 epic called Beau Geste."
"I saw it when I was a boy, "said Bock. "The story was about three brothers who served in the French Foreign Legion."
"The reference to Brian's home suggests a fort."

"I'm listening."
" 'Shakespeare' is on the boat, said Blackowl, giving the code name for the vice President.

The radio crackled. "T-bone, this is Porterhouse.
"I hear you Porterhouse."
"We have Sirloin in visual but would prefer a lower altitude. If he should happen to merge with another similiar colored vehicle under trees or behind a building, we could lose him."
Hagen turned and stared upward from the camper's rear window at the helicopter above. "What's your height?"
"The limit for an aircraft over this section of city is thirteen hundred feet. But that's only half the problem. Sirloin is heading for the Capitol mall. We're not allowed to fly over that area."
"Stand by, Porterhouse. I'll get you an exemption."
Hagen made a call over a cellular telephone and was back to the helicopter pilot in less than a minute. "This is T-bone, Porterhouse. You are cleared for any altitude over the city as long as you don't endanger any lives. Do you read?"
"Man, you must carry some kind of heavy weight."
"My boss knows all the right people. Don't take you eyes off Sirloin."

Giordino walked four blocks to a gas station and dialed a payphone. A male voice answered with a simple hello.
"This is your friendly Mercedes salesman. I have a model I think you'd be interested in."
"You're out of your district sir. You should be selling closer to the waterfront or, better yet, out in the Pacific Ocean."
"Big deal," grunted Giordino. "If you can't afford a good German car, try a Murmoto. I have a lead on six SP-Five Hundred sport sedans that are specially discounted."
"One moment."
A voice came over the line that Giordino immediately recognized as Donald Kern's. "Despite the fact you've stepped out of your territory, I'm always in the market to save money. Tell me where I can see your special discounts."
"You have to get that information out of the Murmoto distributorship in Alexandria. Their computer records show six cars that came into the country but didn't leave the factory. I suggest you hurry before word gets out and someone else beats you to them. Half the cars were off-loaded at the customs dock in Baltimore on August fourth. The other three came in on September tenth."
Kern quickly translated Giordino's meaning. "Hold on," he ordered. He turned to his deputy, who was listening on the speaker. "Get on it. Gain access to Murmoto's computer system and dig out their shipping records for the whereabouts of those six cars before they get wise and erase the data." He returned to Giordino. "Nice work. All is forgiven. By the way, how did you happen to stumble onto the bargains?"
"The idea came from Stutz. Have you heard from him?"
"Yes, he called half an hour ago," Kern replied. "He discovered the source of the problem."
"I sort of thought if anyone could troubleshoot a riddle, he could," said Giordino, referring to Pitt's uncanny talent for discovering an unknown. "It takes a devious mind to know one."
