Title: The most sympathic villain
Description: Let's talk about villains...

reaphy - April 17, 2004 11:09 AM (GMT)
There was another discussion about Dirk and Al's villains. You can find it in this TOPIC.

I asked myself who is the most sympathic villain. I know it's a bizarre question because how can a villain be sympathic? Who is something special? We discussed a lot about the heroes of the stories and now we have the facility to discuss about Dirk's emenies.

I think it's always very important for the story and for Pitt and Co. that they have a good enemy on this note that the story becomes more interesting.

What do you think?

Well ... Bruno von Till wasn't too bad a guy, it was his vicious pet dog that was hungry for Dirk in Med Caper. Plus it wasn't Bruno's fault that Dirk and Al showed up uninvited at Brady Airfield base while he was busy strafing the place. ;)

Pieter De Vaal;
His only crime was trying to overthrow his government. It wasn't his fault he couldn't find good help.

Delphi Moran and Foss Gly. Foss had a glint in his eyes and was charming. Delphi is my kind of guy cause he loves the oceans.

Foss Gly - April 17, 2004 06:26 PM (GMT)
I hate to disagree about my namesake, but I found nothing charming about him, at least in his second and final appearance...

reaphy - April 18, 2004 06:05 PM (GMT)
I agree with you, Foss Gly! :)

Helene Noelle - April 19, 2004 02:08 AM (GMT)
Considering the competiton between Dirk Pitt with Brian Shaw on two fronts (Heidi and finding the North Atlantic Treaty) in Night Probe!, I would say Brian Shaw. Pitt obviously felt sympathetic too B) - what an ending!

Leigh Hunt - April 21, 2004 01:30 PM (GMT)
Yep I agree I would Have to go with Brian Shaw ;)

Ian Kharitonov - April 22, 2004 06:49 AM (GMT)
Of all the villains, I thought Prevlov was the most decent. Not a megalomaniac, sociopath, or greedy tycoon. Just someone doing his job. Shaw comes second -- not really a villain, though.

Helene Noelle - April 25, 2004 08:00 AM (GMT)
And Prevlov did defect to the US! And Brian Shaw (James Bond !?!?) - was an advesary too. Just the way you look at the role I guess. B)

Sandecker Fan - April 26, 2004 07:23 PM (GMT)
I must agree that Prevlov was just doing his job but when you get down to it all of Dirk's nemisis were just doing thier jobs when you look at it from their point of view.

in the start of pacific vortex was or was not summer a villian i think that she would have to be the most sympathetic villian after all .she did end the story in love with dirk . j:

golferreino2002 - June 7, 2004 04:05 AM (GMT)
If you think about it Summer was the most sympathetic. She gave it up to him and gave him 2 children. Forget James Bond go Dirk Pitt.

tonym5 - June 7, 2004 06:11 AM (GMT)
 Dr, Seuss!

Suleiman Aziz Ammar

He was my favorite.

Lee Tong of course.....such a dutiful "son" to Min Koryo!!!!!

BIG RED - July 21, 2004 02:12 AM (GMT)

Hmm...Most Sympathetic Villian:

Patrick Fawkes (His whole family was massacred by soldiers masquerading as AAR troops. The africans pulled the damm wool over his eyes) He wanted vengeance on those that ruined his life. He reminds me of The Punisher.

Andre Prevlov survived, he defected to USA. Sam Merker and Ben Drummer, they may have survived.

Charles Oxley and Joseph Zolar also survived.

I'm with Big Red. Patrick Fawkes gets my vote. Poor guy. He lost everything.w:

I don't see Brian Shaw or Patrick Fawkes listed among our wonderfully comprehensive list of the villains, and I'm not sure that is really an error of omission. Both men are antagonists, but I wouldn't call them villains--certainly not Shaw. Fawkes...well, he is a terrorist, even if a well intentioned one (in their minds, they all are) so I guess he would be "Most Sympathetic" but he also sort of redeemed himself.
I was surprised to find Kelly (from Iceberg) on the list because I'd sort of forgotten about him. He was one of those 'true believers' who has a big plan, that unfortunately involves some bad stuff, but as he sees it, the omelet requires some broken eggs. When Pitt delivers the bad news (Kelly's brother was one of the victims of the scheme) you really get a sense of his tragedy. He wasn't a sadist like Rondheim, but in the grand scheme, still a villain.
