Title: Yaegar's background
gamaytrout103 - February 2, 2006 06:54 PM (GMT)
This is a stupid point I know, but i hadn't noticed it before, and I am just curious. in deep six yaegar appears to be a bachelor or or at least isn't living with his wife and daughters in a house in Maryland. "Nobody knew it to look at him, but he lived in an elegantly designed house in a fashionable residential section of Maryland." (vahalla rising). In Deep six he comments to Dirk "'I've developed this sudden aversion to sleeping alone in my apartment.'" I'm just curious is anyone knows when this change took place, and if their was mention of like he recently married (or had kids) and moved. Thanks.

I'm afraid that Dr. C did not address this directly. It's just one of those things where an author says one thing in an earlier novel and then goes on to say something different in a later novel. It is the rare author who set's out on a series of novels with a plan and continuity throughout.

I can't imagine how hard it would be for an author to keep track of all those itty bitty details about every single character in an 18+ book series plus two side series. I would have to have a huge spreadsheet with all the character details to stay consistent, but then it wouldn't stay fresh and interesting either and I'd probably still forget something anyway. Clive has said before (I think) that he pretty much just sits down and writes the book start to finish and doesn't think too much about it and doesn't go back and rewrite and rewrite and rewrite. Nice find! th: det:
P.S. "What are you, a fan?"

I was thinking about the title of this post and it seems we actually know very little about Yeager's personal background. I was over on Helene's site and all I could gather is that he is a Navy Seal from Vietnam and Sandecker pirated him away from a Silicon Valley firm.
First of all, why does he have to be a Seal with three tours in Vietnam. It would be much more befitting of his personality if he were just a computer geek, and the best of them at that. The only reason to mention his veteran background would be to set up a future raid on his computer domain and he having to physically defend himself and Max. Now THAT's a scene Clive hasn't come up with yet (remind me if I'm forgetting it or if it's in a later Numa Files book that I haven't gotten to).
Secondly, I'd be interested to know where Yeager learned his computer skills. What did he do before being hired in Silicon Valley? Does he hold multiple degrees in computer engineering/science from the likes of Harvard or did he apprentice his way through while Al Gore was inventing the internet? It seems to be a big hole in an otherwise pretty cool character profile.
