DirkPitt - February 15, 2006 12:44 PM (GMT)
Well spotted! th:

I googled the title for a possible hint about the book and this is what I found ;

The discovery of a hoard in 1912 in the neighbourhood of Poltava near the village of Malaya Pereshchepina was not in itself a rare event, but in its wealth and diversity this hoard far exceeds all others. It is rightfully regarded as one of the richest finds from the period of the nomadic migrations.

Dated to the period between the ancient world and the 7th century AD, the hoard is thought to have belonged to Kuvrat (or Kubrat), Khan of Great Bolgary. The treasure is uncommonly rich, consisting of over 800 pieces, mainly of gold (total weight over 25 kg) and silver (over 50 kg), including 16 gold and 19 silver vessels, a gold rhyton and the remains of another rhyton, the gold facing of a wooden jug, a staff with gold facing, a well-preserved iron sword with an end in the form of a ring and gold facing on the hilt and scabbard, fragments of swords and daggers, gold and silver parts of belts, gold jewellery - a torque, an earring, 7 bracelets and 7 rings with inlays of precious stones (amethysts, sapphires, tiger-eyes, garnets, rock crystal and emeralds), a necklace of gold Byzantine coins, plaques and coins which were for sewing onto clothing, and square gold plaques for the facing of a wooden funeral construction.

The Khazar khanate existed during the early medieval period in the area between the Sea of Azov and the Caspian Sea, and excavations of burial grounds and settlements have produced many interesting finds. Most important are the items from the Khazar fortress of Sarkel (834-965) and the Slavic town of Belaya Vezha (existed up to 1173), such as weapons (a flail and arrow-heads), farming tools, domestic objects and ornaments (silver plaques for clothing and belts, ornamented articles of bone, pottery, bronze lamps and glass beads). The imported articles are of no less interest, including a bone comb from a Byzantine workshop and a chess piece (a bishop) from India. Other Khazar fortresses produced stone blocks with drawings and signs.

The burial mounds of the Alans and Bolgars, vassals of the Khazars, also produced rich materials - pottery, farming and blacksmith's tools, and mirrors and amulets found in female burials. There are also 12th century domestic objects and stone steles from the Polovtsy

Clive and Dirk in a Q&A session on the Simon & Shuster Discussion Board back in January shared that they were being pressured by Putnum to release a title - so I wouldn't be surprised that this is indeed the working title of the next Pitt book.

I find it odd, though that Clive's western which he did share the working title of The Chase, is not on there yet.

Great find, dradvent!!

I'm so excited. Maybe I'll start re-reading the books. I haven't even gotten past Atlantis Found though. I keep waiting to read it so that I don't have to wait forever for the next adventure...I guess I'll have to read them now!

Personally, I don't think you're missing much. Black Wind was better but TO and VR were sub-par at best. BW might not make a whole lot of sense without the other two, though. :P

WOO HOO for a new book, I can't wait! :D

Yes, Dirk did reveal in a Q&A session in January on the Simon & Schuster Discussion board that the next book (Treasure of Khan) will feature Dirk & Al. He did allude, however, that future books might venture back to the kids in more starring roles.

What I think this reveals is the fact that Clive and Dirk are aware of what their fans think and are saying in forums like this. Staying in touch in this manner is both admirable and, IMHO smart.

If that's the case, let me suggest for Clive to drop the Sahara lawsuit and let the next DP film to go forward... it's not 1980, and the cold facts are there are TWO audiences...novels and films. You're never going to please the novel fans (for the most part... I consider myself an exception), and to deny the film audience a chance to bond with Dirk and Al is a shame.

My apologies if this is considered off-topic, but they do go together IMO.

I just checked Amazon and the date for new Oregon Files seems to have been bumped up to October 3!!!!! Maybe we'll get lucky and both books wil come out earlier (probably not but I can dream  :P).

WedgeWolf - March 27, 2006 02:05 AM (GMT)
Wow. You know, I just got into Cussler last year and have only read 5 of his now around 28 books. It's a little daunting (but exciting) to get into an author who not only has so many books out already, but adds approximately 2 new ones to his ouvre every year.

So, having yet to read Black Wind, I'm noticing that it appears Dirk senior is back for Treasure of Kahn (going by the blurb at least). Again, not having read Black Wind, I have no opinion on the Dirk junior thing, but how do you all feel about going back to senior? I mean, we are looking at an entirely new author taking over a classic character, whereas with Black Wind he was to a certain extent creating someone new. Thoughts?
