Title: My latest Special Project
Nick Kismet - March 4, 2006 12:40 AM (GMT)
That's right guys. It's time to do the Army thing again. For the next three months, I'll be in Camp Shelby Mississippi, and after that, one year in Afghanistan. Fortunately, I should have complete Internet access, so I will keep you posted here on new developments.

Good Luck Sean! Canadian Military are great men and women to work with (we just took over command of the camp in Khandahar as I'm sure you know already), and I've only heard great things about the folks working out there. We (well they, hopefully we soon!) may not be known across the world for our military prowess, but that is only because we are underestimated by most. Hopefully everything will go well for you out there!

Update#1 From Camp Shelby Mississippi
Having trouble getting online, so I haven't been able to keep up much, but hopefully that will change. Lots to do here, but I'm getting some writing done too.
For what it's worth, we'll be getting an all day pass with a 100 mile limit on Eater SUnday (April 16) Maybe I'll see some of you all out and about
Sean

Nick Kismet - May 9, 2007 04:02 AM (GMT)
Well, here's what I anticipate being the next-to-last update in this topic. That's right, my year abroad is almost finished and I am already packing in anticipation of what will either be the last chapter in this adventure, or the first in the next...
I've been in Herat Afghanistan (on the Western edge of the country, within frisbee distance of Iran) for the last month or so and despite the fact that it is probably the most boring assignment in the country, this is a great place to wind down from the near constant operations of my previous duty stations. I won't go into great lengths discussing those operations, but suffice it to say, I didn't do anything worthy of a Dirk Pitt novel.
Since I've been in Herat however, I have had one remarkable adventure. On April 27 I ran a marathon. For security reasons, the course never left the compound, so instead we ran 18 laps (roughly 1.4 miles each) around the Afghan Army base. Now, this was not my first time running a long distance race, but it has been a few years and I'm no longer in what I would call "the best of shape." Adding to the challenge was the fact that I had only about 3 weeks to train, prior to which my fitness routine amounted to about 40 minutes on the treadmill, 3 times a week. Nevertheless, I completed the course in just over 5 hours, placing 4 in a field of 8 runners. More importantly, I now belong to a very exclusive group...more people have probably summitted Everest than run marathons in Afghanistan. I sincerely hope that changes of course...it would be nice to return here as a tourist someday to find a modern and welcoming nation that hosts all kinds of eco-adventure vacations.
And that's all for this update. I'll be home soon!
tonym5 - May 9, 2007 04:17 AM (GMT)
Glad to hear you are doing well, Sean! w: Hurry home and tell us more about your stay in Afghanistan. Good to hear you were able to finish the marathon. :)
loren1 - May 9, 2007 12:14 PM (GMT)
Great run Sean. It will be a good day when we know you are back in th U.S.A. :)
We are all so pround of the men and women who are serving our country and so sad at the ones who didn't come home. Until then keep safe. w:

oswalder - May 9, 2007 06:39 PM (GMT)
So basically you ran about 16 or 17 more laps than I would have... great job! It's an even more exceptional feat when put into the context of where you are.
Really glad to hear your time there is nearing an end. Stay safe, and we'll look forward to seeing you around the forum more often!
