Title: Ferry sinks off coast of British Columbia
Description: "Queen of the North" goes down...

Foss Gly - March 22, 2006 07:49 PM (GMT)
All 99 passengers and crew are safe Wednesday after the ferry they were travelling on sank in choppy waters off the northern coast of British Columbia.

The Queen of the North hit a rock shortly before 1 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET) on Wednesday, about 135 kilometres south of Prince Rupert. The vessel reportedly began to tip to one side before it sank off Gil Island in Wright Sound.

At least as far as they know everyone is safe and there were no casualties. Great story about the rescue, as fisherman set out to help along withthe "official" rescue teams. Looks like another black eye on B.C.Ferries, as this is the second accident they've had recently...

Any buzz as to whether the ship will be salvaged? I suppose it's no threat to navigation at that depth, but still...

It was a beautiful ship. Kind of make you not want to go one them. Our city has one for sale. Just a few dents and dings. t:

The front page of our local paper had a picture of the stern of the ferry taken that night from one of the lifeboats.Very eerie picture. If I can find a pic I'll post it.
It also had an interview of the former Captain of that ship(30 years on the run) who just so happened to be our neighbor when I grew up.

QUEEN OF THE NORTH Wreck Located
March 27: BC Ferries announced that the wreck of QUEEN OF THE NORTH has been located in 427 meters, (1,400 ft) of water, lying upright on her keel. A deep water submersible has provided the first images of the sunken ferry. No evidence of the two missing passengers was found, but some oil was leaking form the ship.
