Title: Revenge
gamaytrout103 - May 25, 2006 07:47 PM (GMT)
Hey guys I'm back!!! I hope you enjoy the story.
Joseph Zolar sat in his cell, mind dominated by one thought: revenge.
He had been in charge of an ingenious art smuggling ring, and had been incredibly successful. Zolar had everything he could have wanted, but it had all been ruined by one man and this person would pay. His mind returned to focusing on planning his escape. He murmered under his breath, "I'm coming for you Dirk Pitt."
Dirk Pitt woke up, his arms wrapped around his beautiful wife Loren. He leaned over and kissed her. Loren's violet eyes fluttered open.
"Good morning, dear heart," Pitt whispered, lovingly nuzzling her neck.
"Morning, love." Loren pushed herself into a sitting position. She looked at the digital clock by the bed, and groaned softly. "I can't believe its time to get up already. I feel like I just fell asleep."
Pitt smiled devilishly. "That isn't to far from the truth dear. We were a bit busy. I'm ready for another round though."
Loren laughed. "Dirk there is nothing that I would rather do, but we have to get up, and go to work." She looked deep into her husband's eyes and sighed. "I wish you were here more often."
He reached over and ran his fingers through her hair. "I love you Loren. I'm sorry about my absence the last few months. Its been a hard year, but I think were past that now. It's all about you now."
She kissed him. "I'm happy you're back. Come on, dear. Dirk and Summer will be wondering where we are by now." Loren stood up and left the room.
As Pitt moved to follow her, he reflected on just how lucky he was. Just a year ago, he would never have believed that his life could be so perfect. A wonderful wife, two beautiful children, and the best friends anybody could possibly want. How could life get any better?

To avoid confusion and to retain my own sanity while writing this only Dirk Pitt Sr. will be called Pitt. Loren, Summer, and Dirk the younger will all be called by their first names.
"It's about time you three got here," Giordino said as he saw Pitt, Dirk, and Summer walk in. "What took you so long?"
"Just had some trouble getting out of the house," Pitt responded while inspecting his in-box and mentally groaning at how much paper was in it. "Darn paperwork," he thought. He loved his new job as head of NUMA, but the paperwork he could do without.
Giordino eyed his friend knowingly. "I've heard that line before."
"When was the last time you had to use it?" he teased.
"I've graduated past that old line," Giordino said loftily, going along with the game. "I using much more advanced excuses by now, but you wouldn't know anything about that."
Pitt shook his head and smiled. "Joking aside for the moment. Have I missed anything today?"
"It's pretty quiet today actually," Giordino said. "I'm going over the plans for a new submersible. So far it looks pretty good."
Pitt nodded. "Time to work I suppose."
Zolar smiled as he sat outside NUMA. He had followed Pitt and his children from the aircraft hanger where they all lived. He had used some of the money that the federal authorities hadn't been able to find to hire people to find out more about Pitt's life. This was going better than he could have ever imagined. The FBI had to know he was missing by now, but they seemed to be keeping it quiet. "Probably embarrased," he thought. What was important was that Pitt didn't appear to know he was loose. That made things much easier. He went back to reading the reports his agents had compiled. This information would making figuring out how and where to strike far easier and more effective. Killing Pitt wouldn't give him as much pleasure as breaking him. "Pressure points," Zolar mused, staring at a picture of Pitt with Loren and his two children. "It's all about pressure points."
That night Dirk was out with his current girlfriend Emily McLean. They had gone to Great Falls Park to sit by the Potomac River and watch the sunset.
"It's so beautiful," Emily murmured to Dirk.
"I think amazing is the only word to describe it," Dirk agreed, although his mind wasn't really on the sunset or his date. He glanced over his shoulder. He had noticed two men following them earlier, but hadn't told Emily. So far the men had made no attempt to harrass them and he didn't want to worry her. He figured that he'd be able to ditch them when he took Emily home.
Now he was concerned though. The men had been hiding behind them when he last checked, but he no longer saw them. Dirk grabbed Emily's hand and pulled her to her feet. He had a gun in the car, and he decided that he would feel a lot more secure if he was holding it.
"We should go," Dirk said, leading Emily away.
"Why are we in such a hurry?" Emily asked in confusion.
Dirk covered his worry with a grand smile. "I thought we'd go for a romantic drive."
Emily wasn't stupid and had known Dirk long enough to realize that something was very wrong. A stranger wouldn't have seen it, but she noticed the fear that was building in his eyes.
They were only a few yards from the car, when a man cloaked in the darkness stepped in the way.
Dirk stiffened and stepped protectively in front of Emily. "Can I help you?" He readied himself for the fight that he was certain was about to occur.
The figure laughed malevolently. "You can relax. I'm not going to hurt you." The stranger paused for a second. "Well at least not yet. Tell your father that he should keep a close eye on those he cares about. It won't help, but I will enjoy watching him try and fail. Whatever happens after this moment is not an accident."
"Who are you?" Dirk demanded angerly. "What do you want with my father?"
"I'll leave that for you all to figure out," said the figure walking away.
Dirk started to go after him, but he quickly remembered Emily. He still didn't know where the two men who had been following them were and he didn't want to leave her.
A shot rang out slicing through the silence of the night like a knife through butter. Dirk tackled Emily, the bullet grazing his arm.
Emily kept herself together and managed to call for an ambulance quickly. While he helped Dirk slow the bleeding, tears began forming in her eyes. "What is going on here?"
Dirk stared into the darkness. "Good question."

gamaytrout103 - May 26, 2006 05:20 AM (GMT)
The ambulance took Dirk to the hospital and a gruff doctor had wrapped his arm. Emily was frantic, so after being assured that Dirk would be just fine, she was ascorted home by the police on the scene. Then Dirk had the difficult job of calling his family and letting them know what happened them know what happened.
Pitt paced across the room anxiously. "Can you describe this man?"
Dirk shook his head. "He made sure to stand in the shadows, so that I couldn't see him clearly."
"Do you need anything?" Summer asked her brother. She had been trying to keep herself busy and distracted since she heard that her brother had been hurt, so that she could avoid thinking about what could have happened.
Dirk shook his head. "I'm fine, Summer. Thank you."
Loren came into the room. She had been talking to Dirk's doctor. Loren gave him a bright smile. "When you feel up to it Dirk, we can head for home. I filled out all the necessary paperwork and your doctor says we can take you home."
"Thanks Mom," Dirk said happily. Both Dirk and Summer adored their step-mother, and had quickly adapted to calling her "Mom".
"Hold it," Pitt said firmly. "We go nowhere until I figure out what is going on here."
"Dirk..." Loren began.
"That may be a smart idea," Dirk said quickly, interrupting Pitt and Loren before an argument could start. "We'll probably want to make sure the house is safe before going in."
"Did this guy give you any more information that might help me identify him?" Pitt asked his son gently. He was badly shaken by thsi attack on his son.
Again Dirk shook his head no. "I told you what he said word for word. There isn't anything else I can tell you."
Pitt sat down, placing his head in his hands. "I need to go through my old enemies and see who could have done this."
"That is going to be one long list," commented Giordino, who had just arrived. He had rushed over as soon as he found out, but had been farther away than the others. "How are you feeling Dirk?"
"I'm fine Uncle Al," Dirk reassured him.
"Okay here is what we're going to do," Pitt stated firmly in a no-nonsense tone. "I'm going to ask the police to inspect the house before we go in, so that they're are no suprises when we enter. Then I'll see what I can do in terms of body guards for you guys. You will all carry at least one gun at all times and I do mean carry. Nearby is not good enough."
"Darling, you know I don't know how to shoot a gun," Loren reminded him.
Pitt smiled at her. "Guess where we're going tomorrow dear heart. We'll get you a small gun that is easy to carry and a license to carry concealed.
Loren shuttered. "I hate guns."
"And I'd hate to lose you. This is for your own safety," Dirk told her firmly, making it very clear from his tone that this was not a matter up for debate.
"Fine," Loren agreed grudingly.
"I'll go back with you guys and we'll go over the list of possible suspects," said Giordino.
Pitt agreed and they headed back to Pitt's home. Dirk went to bed to get some rest. Summer, Loren, Pitt, and Giordino spent several hours running through the possiblities before Summer and Loren both decided to go to bed. Another hour passed and still Pitt and Giordino were no closer to an answer. The most obvious suspects were dead or in police custody, but there were plenty of people who had been a part of the operations that they had stopped. Since they hadn't been in charge of these operations they had lived, but none of these people had entered the country as far as they knew. Pitt and Giordino had kept tabs on the people they saw as possible threats who were still on the loose. Finally Giordino decided to head for home and get some sleep.
"It's late. Why don't you stay the night? You can sleep on the couch," Pitt suggested.
"Or I could go home," Giordino countered.
"The security company won't send guards out until the morning, and I personally would feel better is you would stay here until then. I don't like the idea of your being alone at your place right now," Pitt said, the worry and stress he was feeling coming through in his voice.
Giordino looked at his friend sympathetically. He knew Pitt was going through hell right now, and was almost tempted to stay to put his friend's mind at ease, but he really didn't want to encourage Pitt to start jumping at shadows. "This guy threatened Loren and the kids, not me."
"No, he said the people I cared about and you're like a brother to me," Pitt pointed out. "You'd be fair game as far as this psycho is concerned."
Giordino shook his head. "I don't need a baby-sitter," he said stubbornly.
"Al..." Pitt started.
"Dirk, enough. I'm headed home. Go to Loren. She needs you now more than ever. I'll see you tomorrow," Giordino said.
After arguing for several minutes, Pitt finally admitted defeat. "Are you at least armed?"
Giordino shook his head, so Pitt retrieved one of his guns and gave it to Giordino.
Giordino checked to make sure his condo was safe before entering and he fell asleep the moment his head hit the pillow.
A soft thumping noise woke Giordino from a sound sleep. He rolled over and glanced at the clock, which read three in the morning. He grunted in annoyance at whoever had woken him up. Garbbing the gun by his bed he went to investigate.
Giordino spotted a shadowy intruder run across the kitchen. He ducked behind a couch before a spray of bullets could cut him down.
Giordino stayed perfectly still behind the couch and waited. Part of human nature was curiosity. When the intruders failed to here anything, they would become less cautious and come out of hiding. This would allow Giordino to even the odds some.
It worked at first. Giordino nailed three and then there was silence.
What made this particularly difficult was that he didn't know how many intruders there were. He tried hard to remember how many he had seen. Finally after waiting half an hour for someone else to move, he decided to go search the house. Careful to keep his guard up, Giordino looked around his condo, but failed to find any more intruders. Either he had shot them all or the ones he hadn't killed had run away.
He picked up the phone and dialed 911. Before he could say anything, two bullets came out of nowhere and struck Giordino in the back. Luckily, the bullets failed to strike any viatal organs, but Giordino knew he's bleed to death if he didn't get help soon. He groped around for the gun he had dropped when he was shot, but couldn't find it.
"Hello, Mr. Giordino," a malevolent yet familar voice said. "I'm going to enjoy watching you die."
Zolar stepped out of the closet that he had been hiding in and pointed his gun at Giordino's chest. He had waiting for Giordino to drop his guard for a second so he could act.
Giordino recognized him instantly. His eyes widened in shock. "You," he managed to stutter weakly. Already the loss of blood was beginning to catch up with him. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be rotting in a federal prison."
"Prison life didn't agree with me," Zolar said with an evil, almost manic laugh. "But I think death will agree with you." His finger tightened on the trigger.
"Wait," Giordino cried, trying despertly to stall for time. He just needed to keep Zolar talking long enough for the police to trace the call he had just placed and get here. "Why bother coming back? You escaped. You probably could have gotten away if you had just left."
"And miss out on my revenge. I don't think so. By the time I'm done, Pitt will wish that he had never meddled in my buisness. He cost me everything, so I'll take everything from him." Zolar's eyes gleamed evily.
"He's a lunatic," Giordino thought. "He was evil and greedy before, but now on top of that he's a complete lunatic."
Before anything more could happenm, a siren sounded outside.
Zolar spun around and saw the lights of a police car and an ambulance. He knew if he didn't run now he's be caught. He looked down at his victim. Giordino was fading fast. Zolar decided there was no way Giordino would pull through. He made his get away.
The cops burst through the door and the EMT's got to work.
Giordino knew he had to do something to help Pitt, so he willed himself not to pass out. "Tell Pitt...Zolar," he managed to gasp out to one EMT, who although confused by the cryptic message acknowledged that she had heard him. There was nothing more he could do now except hope Pitt got the message. The darkness overtook him, and he passed out.
I hurt Al I know. Please don't hurt me. I won't kill him. Believe me Al is one of my favorite characters. I don't kill off my favorite characters, but he won't be in this story much. It's based around Pitt. Al will be there in spirit. It was very sad, but if nothing happened this would be a shockingly boring story.

"What is taking so long?" Pitt asked anxiously.
The hospital had called Pitt soon after the ambulance with Giordino arrived because Pitt was Giordino's emergency contact. Pitt, Loren, and the kids rushed over and were now waiting for news.
"Dirk calm down," Loren said soothingly. "They're doing all they can for him. Al will be fine."
"Of course he'll be fine," Pitt said firmly. "There isn't another option." His nerves were becoming a bit frayed. He felt like things were spinning out of control, and hated that he felt so helpless. He swore he would catch this psycho and make him pay for his actions. Pitt looked at his family. He would do whatever it took to protect them.
"Mr. Pitt?" an attractive EMT asked softly.
Pitt turned to face her. He stiffened slightly. She didn't look dangerous and he had difficulty believing someone would stage an attack in a hospital, but he had learned long ago that the bad guys rarely wore signs and it paid to be careful. "You found me."
"I was on the ambulance that picked up your friend," she began before being interrupted by Pitt.
"Really, I wanted to thank you and your co-workers for helping him," Pitt said gratefully.
The EMT smiled. "Thank you Mr. Pitt, but that isn't why I sought you out. Right before your friend passed out, he said something that didn't make much sense to me, but it seemed important to him that you received the message."
"What did he say?" Dirk asked.
"Tell Pitt zola or zolo. Something like that. I didn't quite get the last word," she responded.
"Zola..." Pitt muttered. Understanding dawned on him slowly. "Could it be Zolar?"
"Yeah, that could have been it," she said brightly. "Does this help you?"
Pitt gave her a small smile. At least now he had something tangible to help him solve this. "Yes, thank you."
After being assured by the doctors that Giordino would be fine, Pitt set up guards outside of his room. Nobody was going to get in there to finish the job. Dirk and Loren decided to stay at the hospital, while Pitt and Summer went to FBI Headquarters to meet with Francis Ragsdale, the FBI agent who had been involved with the Zolar case. Pitt figured that Ragsdale would know what was going on here.
"Sir, he can't meet with you right now. Mr. Ragsdale is very busy," said Ragsdale's secretary.
Pitt gave her an icy look. "You tell Ragsdale I'm here right now. He'll see me, and if he doesn't breaking down the door is always a fun option. This can't wait."
The secretary eyed him, trying to decide whether or not Pitt was serious. She pressed the button on her intercom. "Mr. Ragsdale, there's a Mr. Pitt to see you. He's very insistent."
"Send him please," Ragsdale said.
Pitt didn't wait any longer. He let himself in followed closely by Summer.
Ragesdale stood to greet them and extended his hand. "Mr. Pitt, it is always a pleasure to see you." He looked questioningly at Summer.
She gave him a lovely smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Ragsdale. I'm Summer Pitt."
"My daughter," Pitt said.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Pitt," he said grandly.
"Where's Zolar?" Pitt said abruptly.
Ragsdale suddenly felt uncomfortable. He did know Zolar had escaped and had wanted to warn Pitt the moment he's heard, but his boss had forbid it. It would be very embarrassing for the FBI if it was discovered that a dangerous criminal had escaped.
Pitt noticed the look of apprehension that had crossed Ragsdale's face. He was instantly very angry. All the frustration and anger that had been building up since the attack on his son came out. "He escaped didn't he, and no one told me. That psycho came after my son and best friend. He's planning to kill my whole family. How could you not tell me he escaped?"
Ragsdale tried to calm Pitt. "We had no way of knowing that he'd come after you. We actually figured that he'd try to flee the country."
"But he didn't. He came after my family," Pitt growled. "Are you anywhere near catching him again?" Seeing the look on Ragsdale's face he muttered angerly, "Of course not. You guys can't catch anyone unless I gift wrap them and hand them to you."
"Dad," Summer said, trying to comfort her father. "It will be okay. We'll catch this guy . He'll be back behind bars before he can cause anymore harm."
"So he can escape again. Not this time. When we meet, I guarantee only one of us will walk away alive," Pitt said, a firm resolve in his eyes.

gamaytrout103 - May 28, 2006 11:34 PM (GMT)
Pitt and Summer drove back to the hospital in silence, while Pitt chewed over a plan of action. He wasn't going to wait around passively. He glanced in the rear-view mirror. A car had been following for several miles. "Time to find out if they're following us, or if they're just going the same way," Pitt thought, increasing his speed.
Zolar let himself into Pitt's home. He had been watching Pitt since his escape and using hi-tech binoculars had figured out the code to turn off the security system. Zolar knew he wouldn't be caught entering. Pitt's hanger was secluded enough that he wouldn't be seen entering and he had hired some thugs to keep an eye on Pitt and his family, so he wouldn't be disturbed.
He looked around at Pitt's collection of classic cars, and smiled manically as he picked a pipe off the ground. He walked over to one of the beautifully restored cars and brought the pipe down on the windshield, shattering it. He wrecked many of the cars, but because there were so many a few survived the mass destruction, mostly because Zolar had other things to do while here. A horrible laugh erupted from Zolar as he surveyed his work, laughing as he imagined Pitt's face when he saw his precious cars.
When he felt he had done enough there, Zolar let himself into Pitt and Loren's bedroom with a knife he had stolen from the kitchen. He looked around at all the pictures full of happy memories, and grinned with the anticipation at wrecking it all. Zolar ripped out all the drawers, throwing the clothes everywhere. He knocked the objects on top of the counters and tables to the floor, breaking them. Every picture was destroyed but one, and the bedspead ripped to pieces. The picture that had survived the destruction was of Loren in her wedding dress, glowing with happiness. He put it on one of the pillows and rammed the knife through both.
Zolar went on to completely destroy the area where Summer and Dirk lived.
When the destruction was complete, he looked at his handiwork. Zolar was certain this would have the desired effect. He let himself out and reset the security system. "After all," he thought, "If they know I was here, it'll ruin the surprise."
Pitt was certain now that he was being followed. He had changed lanes several times and tried to get lost in the crowd of cars, but the suspect car had stayed locked on his tail.
"Well, this won't do," Pitt mused under his breath.
"What, Dad?" Summer asked, hearing her father mutter. Her father was behaving very strangely and she wanted to know why.
"Summer, hang on tight and keep your head down. I don't want you hurt," Pitt told her.
Summer was confused. "What?"
"We're being followed. Look behind us. Its the small gray car a couple lengths back." Pitt checked the mirror again to see the unwelcome followers.
"Well that explains why you're driving like a maniac," Summer said, scrunching down in her seat. "What are you planning?"
Her father smiled at her. "You'll have to wait and see. Hand me the gun from the glove compartment."
He increased speed a little bit, not for evasive purposes this time, but to make sure the driver continued to follow him. Pitt was afraid if the driver following him knew he had figured it out that he would bolt. He wanted to have a chat with this guy. Pitt was also extremely happy that he had chosen to drive an SUV from the NUMA pool of cars, rather than one of his collection. The SUV would offer the needed protection for what he was about to do if things didn't go according to plan, although the little car following might not be so lucky.
He aimed himself for an exit that was not popular and had only one lane, and hoped that only the gray car would follow. Pitt's luck held. Suddenly Pitt hit the brakes hard.
The driver of the gray car saw Pitt stop and tried to keep from hitting the bigger car, but only managed to hit at a slower speed. Neither car was badly damaged and the driver went to throw the car in reverse and flee, but Pitt shot out the two front tires.
Pitt jumped out of the car and yelled, "Move and die. Stay put and you'll probably live through this."
The driver wisely didn't move. Pitt yanked him from the car and pushed him against the car.
"Where's Zolar?" Pitt demanded angerly.
"Who?" the driver asked nervously. This wasn't the easy mission he'd been paid to do.
"Zolar, your boss. Where is he?" Pitt growled.
"I don't know. Look this guy comes up to me in a bar and asks me to do a job. 'Easy money' he tells me. I ask him why I should trust him and he says he'll give me the money up front. I needed the cash. I was just to follow you and call to report your movements every hour. He didn't tell me his name or where to find him, and I didn't ask," he babbled, eyeing the gun anxiously. "All I have is a number, I swear!"
Pitt thought for a moment. He didn't want this loser, he wanted Zolar. "Where's the number?"
"The glovebox," the driver answered.
Pitt retrieved the number, while Summer held the gun on the driver. He dialed it on his cell phone.
"What is it?" the slimy voice of Zolar came over the phone.
Pitt was pleased. Finally something was going his way. "Guess who," he said coldly.
Zolar was thrown off some. He recognized the voice instantly. This wasn't part of the plan. "Pitt?"
"Very good. Listen and listen well. You want to settle something, you deal with me and me alone. My family is off-limits. I have a score to settle with you. Let's deal with this man to worm. Stop hiding and come face me." All the anger and frustration that had been building came through in his voice.
Zolar laughed a bone chilling laugh. "Oh Pitt, I'm not even close to done with you. We'll meet, but only when I'm through playing."
Pitt's eyes shown with uncontrollable rage. "I'll kill you. I swear I will."
"Not if I get you first Pitt," Zolar retorted, hanging up.
Pitt slammed his fist against the car in frustration.

The sight inside the hanger shocked Pitt and his family into silence.
"Everybody stay outside," Pitt managed to mutter. "Dirk, Summer, take your guns out and keep watch. I'll let you know when the building is clear."
"Dirk," Loren said worriedly.
"I'll be careful, Loren. I promise," Pitt said, kissing her tenderly.
Pitt walked back into his home. He couldn't even bring himself to look at his striken cars. It was too painful. Systematically he searched every room, including all the closets. He finally came to his bedroom. Zolar had been careful to strike where it caused the most pain. His cars, his children's room, and his and Loren's bedroom. He looked sadly at the ripped pictures, and hoped he still had the negatives somewhere.
His heart froze when he looked at the bed and saw a knife through a picture of Loren.. The message was horribly clear. Loren was his next target. "Over my dead body," he thought fiercely.
Pitt removed the knife from the picture. He didn't want Loren to ever see this.
Returning to his family, he gave a last mournful glance at the hanger. "Where do you go when home no longer feels safe?" thought Pitt.
Zolar had watched the whole thing gleefully. Everything was going perfectly. Now it was time to contemplate his next move.
Pitt arrived at the home of Vice-President James Sandecker. He had talked to Sandecker after the incident at his home, and Sandecker insisted that they come stay with him. Pitt was hesitant to possibly put his old friend in danger, but Sandecker was a persuasive man and had a very strong argument. The Secret Service that protected the Vice-President woul be unlikely to let any unsavory villans into the building. Sandecker absolutely refused to take no for an answer, and Pitt finally caved.
After they were settled, they filled Sandecker in on everything that had happened.
Zolar had followed Pitt to Sandecker's home. This had just gotten more complicated. He drove close to the guard station, but stayed out of sight. They knew he was there because he made sure to make noise, so they would notice.
"Whose there?" one demanded, pulling his gun.
"Don't shoot?" said Zolar, coming into the agents' line of sight and raising his hands in fake helplessness. "I'm lost. Can one of you give me directions?"
The guards exchanged a glance, and one started forward cautiously. "You can't be here," he said firmly.
"Look I'm visting from out of town. I was touring and now I'm just so turned around. I have a map. I don't want to be here. If one of you could just come over here and show me on the map how to get out of here, I would be so grateful," Zolar said, putting a pleading tone in his voice.
The agent's suspicions dropped, and he nodded to his companion that he'd deal with this. They walked out of sight, and soon as that happened, Zolar knocked him out. Mimicking the guard's voice he shouted, "I'm going to see this guy out."
The other agent suspected nothing. "Got it."
Zolar drove the car into an alleyway not far away, and slipped into the agent's uniform. He killed the agent, and hid the body in the car's trunk. Zolar was happy that his hair was the same color as the agent. Slipping a pair of sun glasses over his eyes, so he would be harder to ID as an imposter, he walked back to the guard station.
The other guard was watching the monitor's and didn't see Zolar enter. "That you, Ed?" he asked, looking back for a quick second. Something was wrong about his companion, but before the agent could give a longer look Zolar stabbed him in the back and hid the body in a closet.
"Edward Cleary," he mused, staring at the ID he had stolen from the first agent. He smiled knowing he had the perfect cover.

Kind of hard to believe that he can get a drop on Secret Service guards despite human nature to give the benefit of a doubt to someone who is lost.

Oh I don't know. When nothing is happening and actions are being repeated again and again, the mind tends to dull, particularly if you've been at it for a while. The guard had no reason to doubt the identity of the person returning.
Pitt waited alone in the house. Zolar had made a drastic mistake. He had underestimated his opponent. The guards at the front of the house had stopped responding to calls, and Pitt was able to guess what Zolar was up to, so he had the Secret Service agents take Sandecker and his family to safety. He wanted to deal with Zolar alone, and wouldn't allow anyone else to be hurt.
The door behind him creaked and Pitt spun around on his heel, gun at the ready.
The shock on Zolar's face was obvious, and pleased Pitt immensely. He was finally in control again.
"You!" Zolar cried, barely able to believe his own eyes.
"Who else?" Pitt asked in mock innocence. "I think it is way past time we met face to face."

Zolar's eyes darted around the room, looking despertly for an escape route. He wasn't ready to deal with Pitt yet, and the look in Pitt's eyes frightened him. It was the look of a tiger closing in for the kill. "How did you know I was here?"
"Two Secret Service agents fail to respond to calls. What am I supposed to think? Where are they by the way?" Pitt asked.
"Take a guess," growled Zolar, trying to back out of the room.
"Stop right there," Pitt ordered, getting angrier by the second. He felt dirty even talking to this scum.
"So what now?" Zolar asked, his hand moved subtly toward his gun.
"You die," Pitt said, his voice calm and even.
"You first," cried Zolar, pulling his gun and aiming it at Pitt.
Zolar never got a chance to pull the trigger. The bullet entered his body, causing him to bleed internally. He'd be dead within seconds.
Pitt knelt by Zolar. "Justice has been served," Pitt hissed to Zolar as he died.
When Pitt was sure Zolar was dead, he went to find his family. They were clustered together in a nearby home, surrounded by Secret Service agents.
Loren was the first to see Pitt. She rushed forward to hold him.
Pitt took his wife in his arms, kissing her passionately, and then he hugged his children. "It's over. It's all over now," he whispered to them.
The nightmare was over and life moved forward. Giordino recovered quickly and returned to his old life without problems. The two agents who died were given beautiful funerals, and their families were well-taken care of by the government.
Pitt reflected on the events of the past few days, and a wave of relief swept through him. "I really am a lucky man," he thought smiling.
