McConaughey, Cruz "Take Time Off"
by Joal Ryan
The unmarried life does have its advantages, as the uncoupling Matthew McConaughey and Penélope Cruz might attest.
In lieu of divorce papers and court filings, a press release first issued Friday to People magazine was all the duo needed to announce they were splitting up. Sorry, "tak[ing] time off."
"Due to busy work schedules and so much time apart, they mutually decided four weeks ago that separating was the best thing to do at this time," the statement said.
McConaughey, 36, and Cruz, 32, became an item in 2004, not too long after Cruz took time off from Tom Cruise. The two met on the set of Sahara.
Although their days as a fun couple were relatively short-lived, they still outlasted their action movie, a $130 million would-be blockbuster that sputtered at the 2005 box office after a take of only $69.8 million, per the stats at BoxOfficeMojo.com.
According to People, it was distance that kept McConaughey and Cruz apart. Of late, McConaughey has been in the South filming the football biopic We Are...Marshall, while Cruz has been in Spain filming the bullfight drama Manolete. Last February in Los Angeles, the two were spotted acting "not particularly cuddly-coo" at a "chilly" dinner, E! Online columnist Ted Casablanca reported at the time.
Prior to Cruz, McConaughey was linked to the likes of Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd. Cruz was said to have briefly dated Nicolas Cage and Matt Damon, prior to her high-profile hookup with Cruise, her Vanilla Sky costar.
Neither McConaughey nor Cruz has ever married.
