Hi everyone. This is my first post here, and let me say it is good to be among so many other Cussler fans. :)

Anyway, I am a big, big fan of the RTT book, as I'm sure a lot of you are, and to a slightly lesser extent, the film. Now, we have seen Sahara out in theaters, and it did reasonably well in the Box Office and on DVD, so with that semi-success in the Pitt franchise, my question I want to put forward is this; is Raise the Titanic worth making into a film again?

I mean, I know Cussler was in a leagal battle with Hollywood over Sahara, and we probably won't see another Pitt movie for a while, but let's say we did in the near future. Does RTT have a chance of being made again? I think that with todays special effects and big budgets, it could be an insanely great picture.

I'm actually working on a fan script for it I want to send to Clive and have him read, but that's a different topic all together. :)

Anyway, what are some of your opinions on this?

t: I don't reckon they will re-make it, but I would sure love to see them do so, as like you said it potentially could be 'an insanely great picture' ;)

The effects were amazing for it's time, just imagine what could be done today! :blink:

It would be hard to keep realistic enough for moviegoers not to groan the whole time, especially because we know now the condition of the real Titanic: In two big pieces, plus many others. So... while I would love to see it as a movie, I just don't think it would fit real well today.

Now, you brought up an interesting point, one I'd like to adress if you don't mind.

You mentioned the fact that we know what the real Titanic looks like. A valid point. I belive that the actual book has been slightly neglected among a few Cussler fans (At least that I know) for that reason. But I have to disagree with you on your opinion about a re-make of RTT. I actually think it would fit rather well today.

First, let me ask you this; Is Hollywood not known for making fiction way beyond what people think? Sure, we know the REAL condition of the Titanic, but why should that be keeping them from making the movie again?

I think that people would actually appreciate the film rather than pan it if it were done right. Seeing the Titanic surface again and finally finish her maiden voyage in the present times will strike a chord with anyone, be it the average movie-goer or whatever, even if it's fiction.

And as long as you know it's fiction and not real, why should it matter? I like to use "National Treasure" as an example. Here we have a fantastic story about a hidden treasure, whoes map is hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independance. Now, people loved that movie. Yet anyone with half a brain can tell that the history of the declaration itself shows nothing of any secrect organization involving the founding fathers (Though it's known some were involved with the Stone Masons, or whatever it's called), or a secrect treasure, or what have you. We know the real facts behind that item, and yet people will sit there and say that RTT won't be redone because we know the real facts about the Titanic and no one would see it? Even though such a story falls under the same category?

A load if you ask me.

And besides, there have been plenty of other movies that have taken huge liberties with actual things and events, yet people enjoy them, even though they know what really happened or what a certain place or thing really looks like today. RTT wouldn't be any different if done today. And I don't think anyone would be groaning or complaining as long as it's an enjoyable film.

Besides, the real Titanic won't be around forever. I personally see remaking RTT as sort of a way of honoring the ship and those lost with her. t:

Sorry about that long post. I just like to go in depth when I back up my stance on certain things. :)

Knowing what I know about the real Titanic's current (and worsening) condition, I still would love to see RTT redone or remastered with new special effects. (Heck, if Lucas can re-release Star Wars four hundred times, why couldn't we get RTT??)

Today's movie-going audience is savvy enough that it would accept the Cussler fate of the ship as the damn good fiction that it is.

And if some fans are neglecting to read RTT because of the real ship's fate, they're missing a damn fine read.

Yes, even knowing the real fate of the Titanic and despite the big, romanticized movie made by James Cameron, it would be well worth seeing the special effects that are currently available used in a new movie. The only drawback is the huge budget of it and even if the ticket sales are decent, it would have to be well over the mark set recently by the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie to get anywhere near enough profits to recoup the budget of the movie. My rant is the "Big Budget, Big Event" that is expected of, and current phase of Hollywood movies that is already pushing the financial boundaries. What is missing in this day and age are the well written, character movies that are needed. Hollywood, I am afraid is lacking in creativity with their obsession of franchising movies with sequels that keep those "Hot" properties going ad infinitum. Welcome to the forum, Titanic Fanatic!!!
