GRAND ISLE, La. -- A research vessel continued to burn off the coast of Louisiana yesterday, a day after the Coast Guard rescued 40 people from the ship.

The vessel was still afloat and remaining crew members were working yesterday to put out the fire, Coast Guard Petty Officer Susan Blake said.

Two men suffered minor injuries fighting the fire aboard the 175-foot Odyssey Voyager, which was about 10 miles from the coast. They were taken by helicopter to West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero.

``One fellow has some smoke inhalation and the other guy had a few lacerations," Blake said yesterday. ``Neither one looked serious."

The names of the men were not available. The rest of the crew was taken from the ship to Fourchon, a Gulf Coast port city.

The Coast Guard station in Grand Isle said it dispatched the cutter Pelican after receiving a distress call from the ship about 5 p.m. Friday. The Odyssey crew had reported a fire in the engine room.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation, Coast Guard officials said.

It was not immediately known what type of research the crew was conducting.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were reported over parts of the Southeast and the Lower Mississippi Valley yesterday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Grand Isle Coast Guard station is on a barrier island in Barataria Bay.

Here's an "action photo" supplied by the Coast Guard. It's a small pic, so you can't really make out much detail. :(

It's sad to see a ship burn. At least no one was hurt bad. I hope they can save the ship. :(
