The Cusslers sign a new Dirk Pitt adventure, Treasure of Khan, a book that may be more timely than they planned, given what’s up with North Korea, for Korea is part of the 1281 naval force that gathers in Hakata Bay on Kublai Khan’s orders to lay waste to Japan. Japan is saved by a super typhoon that wrecks the gigantic armada. A Mongolian survivor makes it to a Pacific haven and returns to the Great Khan’s court with a native villager as his honored guest, all of which has huge consequences for Dirk Pitt, his kids Dirk and Summer, and NUMA in 2007. Pitt is in fact nearly swamped by a freak wave on Russia’s pristine Lake Baikal while rescuing an oil survey team. Is it the work of Mother Nature or that of a mysterious mogul doing covert oil deals with the Chinese and sabotaging global oil markets? And does the Mongolian mogul cherish dreams of his mighty ancestors whose tombs, incidentally, filled with fabled wealth and the bones of concubines and other support staff, have never been found?
