Title: Treasure of Khan Review
Description: Spoiler Free

Ace Roberts - December 1, 2006 12:42 AM (GMT)
Dirk Pitt is back!!

And by that I mean, the Dirk Pitt of old has resurfaced in easily the best Cussler book written in ten years. It's as if Clive stepped into a time-machine and vaulted back to his prime and wrote this between (say) Sahara and Inca Gold.

Dirk Cussler has captured the magic of his Dad's style while sprinkling tid-bits of his own in one of the most engaging manuscripts I've read in years. The action is amazing - from the freak wave on Lake Baikal to the sands of the Gobi desert. It's like old home week when Dirk and Al fight the bad guys and escape unbelievable odds at every turn. I literally could not put the book down for 8 straight hours (a nicely timed ice storm in Texas helped).

I thought Dirk did an admirable job with Black Wind, here he hits a homerun not only out of the park - but record distance.

You will NOT be disappoinetd in Treasure of Khan - in fact - you'll be delighted!!

Bravo to both Dirk & Clive.

"Ace"

I've got to wait for Christmas too..I swore on a stack of them bible thingys that I wouldn't rush out and buy it

gamaytrout103 - December 1, 2006 06:15 AM (GMT)
I just bought it today!! I can't wait. A lot of self-restraint (and avoiding bookstores) went into waiting until after the big paper I was writing (about a third of my grade for this class) was done. That torture is over and now I actually have a couple days to read it before I have to deal with finals!! :) :) party: Happy surprise. Why do none of my favorite authors ever come out with books when I have time to read them...? <_<

Andy in West Oz - December 1, 2006 07:03 AM (GMT)
Great news! I'm restraining myself till the MM PB comes out but may have to break my own rules by the sounds of it!

Bravo DC!

Cheers beer:

Andy

At least you're not alone. I had to do the same thing, and with Skeleton Coast also. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

loren1 - December 1, 2006 08:08 PM (GMT)

Good luck on your finals! I remember those days!

I bought the double signed copy from The Poison Pen (Great Service) and don't want to even open it or take it out of its plastic cover, so my wife said she will buy me another copy(unsigned) for xmas so I too have to wait till xmas day to start the adventure, its like waiting for an old friend to come and visit.

On another note I was in the USA last month (I'm from Australia) and after reading Skeleton Coast I bought ALL of Jack DuBrul's books (7) and have started reading them in order, have finished 2 and just started no.3, now I am very happy to say its just like reading an old Dirk Pitt adventure, absolutily great and if you can't stand the wait between a GREAT Cussler read, I highly recommend Jack DuBrul as does Mr Cussler.

Dear_Heart05 - December 4, 2006 09:52 AM (GMT)
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!
Finished it about 10 minutes ago. OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH!!!!!! I swear I squealed every 5 minutes. All I'm gonna say is that this book DEFINATELY makes up for the missing Dirk and Al action in Black Wind.

And another thing, the last 50 pages................GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

josieland - December 4, 2006 06:29 PM (GMT)
So glad to hear the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Apparently Dirk Cussler has inherited the best of his father's genes in so far as writing talent. Who's to say what other treasures he will grace us with in the future.
I plan to quench the thirst of my anticipation for Treasure of Khan ASAP.

Does that mean you like it :P

No wonder you were nowhere to be seen this weekend young lady ;)

Ace Roberts - December 5, 2006 03:29 PM (GMT)
On top of the book being GREAT - one of our own board members here is actually a character in the book, a major character.

He was at the 2005 Cussler Convention in Denver - but was NOT in Scottsdale this year.

Has anyone who has not discussed this on the Simon & Schuster board caught this and have a clue who I'm referring to??

oswalder - December 6, 2006 02:32 AM (GMT)
Didn't you already post it somewhere on this board? I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about but only because you mentioned it before. Is that why your post was edited?

Pretty cool either way! th:

Empress - December 6, 2006 02:41 AM (GMT)
I know exactly who it is and I think that is great!!!!!!!!!! Way to go baby!!!!!

Mostly Heep - December 6, 2006 02:47 AM (GMT)

I can't get to the S&S board either

 how the hell did that happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and what language is it?

Dear_Heart05 - December 6, 2006 06:48 AM (GMT)
It's Russian...WOOPS! Have I said too much? :P
Yeah, yeah! I'm so jealous! I wonder if he knows yet??? Where is he by the way? The stinker should be on here bragging his butt off! <_<

Ace Roberts - December 6, 2006 04:23 PM (GMT)
The "stinker" knows and is probably being a little bit "humble" about it all. He was supposed to get his copy of the book yesterday (I think) and is probably deep into reading it and still not believing his good fortune.

I don't have the book with me, but I believe he makes his appearance on page 73.

boissee - December 7, 2006 01:55 AM (GMT)
How cool is that? Good for him! th:

loren1 - December 7, 2006 02:18 PM (GMT)
Now I have to go back and check that. :)

Martin Seymour - December 12, 2006 01:00 AM (GMT)

that translates to "You can understand it" according to a russian to english translation website.

The only new guy is see on 73 is Ian Kharitonov.....is that someone on here? Sorry if its someone i should recogonize but dont...but congrats none the less!!!!

and by the way, how did this person get into clive's book? close friend? That is way cool though!!!

I am going to feel real dumb if its the owner of the site or something....

Ian Kharitonov - December 14, 2006 10:19 AM (GMT)
Ace, you foiled my plan to keep it all quiet :P LOL

Thanks for all the kind words, folks. w:

Quite true, I still find it difficult to believe! I'm absolutely overwhelmed.

The most shocking aspect of ToK is that the wonderfully-named Captain stays in the book all the way until page 148.
Which makes Dirk Pitt a kind of a supporting character

All right -- I'm off to give the book another go. That's the kind of stuff I'll never tire of rereading.

P.S. Empress: Love your language skills th:

P.P.S. As to HOW and WHY I got into the book -- that's a tale I hope to share with all of you over drinks in Charleston. ;)

bookworm - December 15, 2006 10:18 AM (GMT)
Welcome Micheal. I am still waiying for my books ordered through the PP web site. Seems like some of you have already got them. Hope mine won't be long!
Shant read them of course!! Will have to wait 'till the PB comes out.

Merry Xmas everybody and a happy and healthy New Year.

Richard Palmer - December 19, 2006 04:44 PM (GMT)
Richard had eye surgery so I am reading for him right now. We both thoroughly enjoyed the Treasure of Kahn. I can tell when Dirk is writing and when it is Clive. It will take me a little bit to get comfortable with Dirk, although Black Wind was great. He just has a slightly different rhythm to his writing and a few words he throws in that just aren't old enough for Clive to use. The book was great and I loved the different plots that all tie together so nicely. Enjoyed the journey around Mongolia, with the dry dusty winds here, if I stepped into the yard and ate a mouthful of dirt it almost felt like I was with Pitt and Giordino walking across the desert again......Poor Al he get dragged through some nasty situation with his boss.
He deserves a great big glass of something at the end of these hikes.
Thank you for another day of exciting reading. I didn't put it down but read all night, then had to re read it for Richard. Just finished my 3rd time through and still like it as much as I did the first.

I just got my copy from the library yesterday, its excellent so far. :)

Sandecker Fan - December 28, 2006 12:50 AM (GMT)
Yeahhh I got the book for Christmas. Just finished reading it about an hour ago. What can I say except "Hail Hail the gangs all here" Of course I think Sandecker should have been in it more.

Raess - December 30, 2006 04:39 AM (GMT)
Just finished Treasure of Khan, thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad they were able to fit everyone in.

pink little birdie - January 1, 2007 08:04 AM (GMT)
This book is full of the old heart stopping acton of Dirk Pitt.
it's great read it (goes without saying)

tonym5 - May 20, 2008 03:36 AM (GMT)
A realistic tale of a Hero who is no longer as agile but still can kick butt when it's necessary. This is a gritty tale of surviving deserts, mountains, and Lake Baikal, a true test of a man's mettle and still can then piece together what he is up against. This is one epic adventure tale that will take your breath away. p:
