Title: Looking for Recommendations for Next Read

Infernorhythm - December 10, 2006 04:12 AM (GMT)
Hey all, new to the forums. I got into Cussler's novels through the Sahara movie, which I loved. I immediately read the Sahara novel, and I slowly got into the novel world. It's over the top, sometimes unbelievable, but oh so enjoyable. So far, I've read Sahara, Treasure, and I just finished Trojan Oddyssey (in that order). I'm curious as to what to read next. I'm interested in reading Pacific Vortex to see Dirk's origin, and I'm also interested in The Mediterranean Caper (for the air dogfights), and I hear Inca Gold is really good.

Does anyone have some recommendations? They would be very appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!!! I'm biased, but you must read Raise the Titanic! They are all great books, but the earlier ones are the best to read.

Welcome to the Forum!!
For the most part each book can stand on it's own. There isn't any book that I could say to read over another. My favorite is Shock Wave followed closely by Dragon... There isn't a Cussler novel that I haven't read at least 3 times.

I think Inca Gold is the best of the Dirk Pitt Series. I also love all the Oregon files books. As far as other authors, check these out ordered best to good:

Jack DuBrul
James Rollins
Ted Bell

Welcome to the forum, Inferno.

Yep, all of them are great!

My favs are: Iceberg, Raise the Titanic, Vixen 03, Night Probe, Cyclops, Inca Gold and Shock Wave.

Oh, and -- well, I'm biased, but check out the newest Treasure of Khan as well ;)

Glad to know that the Sahara movie did some good.

Welcome Infernorhythm! I agree that all are great and can be read in order or by themselves, but reading them in order will give you insight into later character development. It's fun to see the characters grow throughout the series.

Pacific Vortex was the first book Clive wrote, but didn't get published until later. Read it first rather than in the order it was published because it will seem very out of place later in the series.

Well what can I add, I have yet to read a bad Cussler Novel.

Vixen 03 was my first back in the '70s and been hooked ever since. The Pacific Vortex is usually what I tell people to read first to hook them on Cussler it cant get any faster in pace and briefer in reading. Fastest book I ever read!

Now that youve started the ride.....Enjoy it! b:

Take care!

Thanks for all the recommnedations guys! I decided to pick up Inca Gold because of all the good buzz I've heard about it here at the board. So far I'm a few chapters into it, and the Francis Drake opener was great. Out of all the opening flashbacks I've read in Cussler books so far, it had to be the most exciting and mysterious, narrowly beating out the Treasure opener.

I was going to get Pacific Vortex, but I realized that I already knew the outcome of the story thanks to all the referencing to it in Trojan Oddyssey. Still, I might get it. Either that or Treasure of Khan. I'm interested in seeing why Al and Dirk are back in the action after taking quieter jobs in Trojan Oddyssey.

Welcome to the forum - the great thing about this forum (and I am still a newbie I would say) is that everyone is friendly and helpful. I have seen great discussions on here but they stay civil and courteous and most forums / message boards don't do that. Come here regularly for information and great discussions.

I agree with everyone that all the books are good as a stand alone but I am like you and that the movie Sahara got me hook first. I decided to start at Pacific Vortex and go from there. Right now I am at Dragon and will finish in another day or two. I cannot wait to start on Sahara based on that is what got me hook and according to pretty much everyone the book puts the movie to shame.

I would say that's my two cents but it may be closer to a nickel based on volume and not value.
