Title: Who is editing these days?
Description: Questions about language mistakes

Has anybody else noticed the appalling number of grammar, syntax and word use errors in Black Wind and Treasure of Kahn. I gave up on Black Wind and have now given up on Treasure of Kahn. The errors are too distracting. I would think that anyone with a reasonable education in the English language would notice these but maybe I'm wrong. Don't the publishers proofread these things? Don't the Cusslers have editors? I always enjoyed the over-the-top writing style that was a delightful part of the Dirk Pitt persona. But these two books are beyond over the top -- they are sliding down the back side of the wave and heading for the bottom. I'm deeply disappointed.

Yep, I noticed plenty of them. But I sure wasn't distracted enough to stop reading. I've seen far worse books -- much to my disappointment. But you're right, more of that has been happening recently.

I 've noticed it it in other authors novels also, it got so bad that I actually emailed the author about it and he and I have been looking into it. I'm a creative writing major but I'm not an editor and for it to stop me in my tracks is something over the edge.

Journalism in general has gone off the deep end. I am appalled at what passes for literate writing, especially in articles posted on the internet. But I have seen it in newspapers as well. There was another thread on the forum that discussed the errors, probably in the Black Wind category as that was the worst book to date regarding errors, and someone hypothesized that Clive's editors know that his books will sell on reputation alone and thus don't have to do as good a job at editing. I think it's ridiculous that any errors that can be noticed by a common reader are slipping through the professional editors. The next best job has to be a meteorologist. p:

One thing that irritates me to no end is when editors miss the phrase 'I could care less.' I think this is on page 380.

The term is COULDN'T care less. COULDN'T COULDN'T COULDN'T COULDN'T COULDN'T

Could care less makes no sense at all!!!

COME ON EDITORS!!!!!!!!

The one I hate is the confusion of "then" and "than"

Thees airs n edeting could b do too the fact that most peeple in america dont talk good english as it is.

Perhaps the editors are just trying to bring it down to the level that most people talk in thier everyday converstations. I could be way off base but, dealing with people this is what I have noticed.
