Title: Valhalla Rising - Dirk Pitt history changed?
NiteTrek - March 19, 2007 02:08 AM (GMT)
I'm currently reading Valhalla Rising (read all of the previous ones.) I noticed a bit of information that appears to contradict something in "Raise the Titanic."
On page 121 of Valhalla Rising, the following exchange is made about the sunken ship - Emerald Dolphin:
Pitt studied Giordino's sketches and compared them with images on the sonar screen. "They rest about a quarter of a mile from each other."
Birch said, "Because of the ship's weakened internal structure from the fire damage, she probably disintegrated on the way down."
"Not unheard of," said one of the scientific team. "The Titanic broke in half as she sank."
Now, as we all know, in real life the Titanic may have broke in half, but when "Raise the Titanic" was written, that wasn't known and I believe it was in one piece which allowed Pitt to raise her.
So, why even mention the Titanic in this book, especially when it contradicts Pitt's previous adventure? Why didn't Pitt speak up? It other books he was recognized as the man who helped to raise the Titanic, but here, it seemed to be completely ignored. It seems as if Pitt's "history" has been changed. Was this an oversight on Cussler's part? I don't see how it could've been.

Probably was an oversight. I just read RTT. Cussler was probably thinking in terms of our history rather than that of Pitt's history. Ships also have the bad habit of doing weird things in PItt's history. You never know in Pitt's history, maybe someone hijack the Titanic and sunk it agiain. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. Wait to you get to the end of the book and you really, will be stimied. :P Otherwise, enjoy the book.

My take on it is this. Its a work of fiction. Things might not always line up, and you just have to read the books because you enjoy them, and stop being so analytical about everything. Just my thoughts on it.

Enjoy the book and just enjoy the irony of it being out of whack with a previous novel. w:
