Description: What did you do?

Hey gang,

I thought that I’d share with you a bit of what my wife and I did over the holiday weekend and then see if anyone wanted to post what they did.

My wife and I escaped to Orcas Island, for those who may not know about Washington State, Orcas is part of the San Juan Islands close to the Canadian boarder and is a must see area if you ever visit our state.

Anyway, the trip was great and we were blessed with nice weather which made the sunsets look like giant paintings. One of the stops we visited on the island was a resort called Rosario. It’s a large mansion built by Robert Moran in 1906-1909, a former Seattle Mayor and shipbuilder.

Robert Moran was a pretty amazing guy and did a lot for the marine industry during his time. He arrived in Seattle in 1875 at the age of 18, and without a penny to his name he built a large ship building and repair company call the Moran Brothers Company that worked off of Yesler Warf during the Klondike Gold Rush were his company built and delivered 12 175-foot paddle wheel boats that sailed the Yukon River.

In 1888, Moran was elected as Seattle’s mayor and was a hero for his leadership during and after the great Seattle fire in 1889 that destroyed much of the city, and was elected for a second term because of it. During his time in government politics, he secured several government contracts for his ship building company.

In 1904, Moran was successful in launching Washington State’s only Battleship, the USS Nebraska.

After trials and fittings, the USS Nebraska was commissioned on July 1st 1907 and was the last battleship in the Virginia Class, and was regarded as the US Navy’s flag ship. The Nebraska was part of the “Great White Fleet” in 1908 and also saw combat off of Veracruz in 1914 and 1916.

We wnet to our cottage in the 1,000 Islands. It was kind of cool but the sun was shining. Got a lot of my garden put in order for the year. There's still more to do next weekend. The boat isn't in the water yet. Gas cost to much anyway.

Had a barbaque, my brother, my dad, and I cleaned the interior of, washed the outside, painted the wheel rims, and waxed my dad's semi-truck. I got roped in to mowing the lawn for the third time ever. (Which has become my summer job.)
