Pacific Vortex is the first book in the Dirk Pitt series. Polar Shift is about the third or fourth book in the Kurt Austen series, so it shouldn`t cause any confusion to read it now. If you want to read the NUMA Files in proper order, start with Serpent.

Reading them in order is good but not required. It just explanes some things that are mentioned in later books. :)

I have read most of the books out of order and other than Dirk's love affairs there seems little to worry about by doing so. beer:

I just recently introduced my mother to Clive's books. She started with Inca Gold and is now reading Sahara. I think the other one she has borrowed is Valhalla Rising. I did tell her that they were all in chronological order on my bookshelf but that it wasn't essential to read them in order. She hadn't realised they were all about the same guy! Once she has gotten to know Dirk Pitt I'll introduce her to Kurt & then Juan.....
So many books, so little time! :P
