Varda was indeed an amazing woman of strength and spirit who captured Drek's respect despite his feelings of her magical abilities. In his battle with Orgoth he had taken a sword of amazing power. Varda said it was made by a man who had both magical abilities and scientific prowess. Drek was not impressed but was glad to have something that could give him the upper hand in his battles against those with magical or scientific abilities. Varda had told him that she was well informed of history and how the previous civilization had fallen to ruin by a comet hurtling between the Earth and the moon because of a war between the scientific and magical descendants of Atlantis. Orgoth and he had fought because Orgoth's mother had at one time relations with Drek's father, Lirk. Drek went to his father's journals and found the passages about Uma, Orgoth's mother and the brief relationship between the two. But Drek also learned his father had also feuded with her family as well as his grandfather, Urk. As Drek read more he learned of the enmity between the two families for many generations. The further he read he learned about his family's former name, Pitt, and how the Pitt family had many accomplishments in different fields but always fighting against those who would cause injustice and injury to others in pursuit of power. Including one man back in the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century, one Dirk Pitt.

Varda and Drek set out on a trek to rid the world of evil. After many moons the two of them had become closer. When they came upon the strait that separated the British Isles from the European continent, they decided to construct a boat to cross the threacherous waters. Despite near gale winds and high seas they made it to the continent and continued on their trek. In what had once been France they came across a village of people who were enslaved by a powerful wizard who used science to keep his slaves from from rising up against him. He was Gemindos.

Gemindos was born Gemelii Mindoras, a whiny baby who as a child whined and begged for things until he learned to take what he wanted. At 5'3", Gemindos was a short, paunchy and easily scared brat until he learned that others could be made to be afraid of him if he had taken something of value to them. This only made him worse as he preyed on people until he came upon those who were not so easily scared. Then he learned to gather others who were like him and using them together in gangs. Latching onto anything of value, Gemindos grew steadily in power as he slowly enslaved people under his power.

3994 AD Giovanni DeVallartos, the Eleventh Fellow Traveler of the Time Council kept his distance from most of the remaining people on Earth and stayed in the Chronos Geostationary Colony when he was not busy traveling through time on business for the Time Council. Sitting on the couch in his suite on the Chronos Colony, Giovanni was reading some papers he had written up earlier in the day about his recent missions. Giovanni's mind began to wander as his eyes glazed over with tiredness. He laid the papers down beside himself and relaxed. It was back in 3963 when he was appointed the Eleventh Fellow Traveler of the Time Council, succeeding Volta Xanthos in the position. Giovanni was a young man at the time and had been trained by Victor. Standing up and stretching, Giovanni decided he would fix a snack and have a cognac snifter to help him relax, Giovanni padded in his slippers towards the kitchen. Bringing the food and the Cognac into the living room and placed them on the coffee table and turned on the video monitor and decided to listen to a news channel. The usual news reports of the destructive nature of the poweful lords of science, wizardry and magic reigning terror on their enslaved people. The eighth report was news of a regular human who was fighting against the powerful warlords was good news indeed. Giovanni was pleased as well as many people in the space colonies in Earth's orbits, on the Moon and other locations in the Solar System. Giovanni decided to email a friend in the Marten Colony on the moon about the news. Stefan Varak was a good friend of Giovanni's from their time in High School. They still kept in contact and would get together on occasion to kibbitz and play cards or chess.

In the ruins of what used to be the village of St. Mere-Eglise, France Varda and Drek finally came upon Gemindos and battled for several hours against him and his minions. Finally, Gemindos had enough of losing many of his fighters and with an unknown third member fighting alongside Varda and Drek, Gemindos realized there was nothing to gain by fighting a stalemated battle. Gemindos and the few men left in haste. Varda had to hold Drek back because she realized it was foolhardy to continue on. Drek was furious and wanted to pursue Gemindos. Ukla, the warnok wanted to pusue Gemindos too but Varda pursuaded the two men from wasting their energy and convinced them to stay overnight to gain some needed rest. They found the remnants of an ancient church and slept. When they arose just after dawn they found some villagers lined up with empty bowls awaiting for some food to be given by some elderly women who had gathered some food from the nearby farmers.
